BEER FOR YOUR BUCK
AROUND THE WORLD
As Australians, we make no secret of being a
competitive bunch, especially when it comes to
comparing ourselves on the world stage in regard to
the things that really matter, like the standard of living,
sporting prowess and — hell, why not — the price of
a beer.
Comparison site finder.com.au recently gathered intel
on the average cost of a pint of beer in 177 populous
cities around the world and the news was a bit of a
frothy brew.
At $7.87 Sydney ranked as the 27th most expensive
city in the world to be served a cold one, which is
outrageous and nothi to be proud of. While it’s a way
off the top three: Dubai ($15.10), Doha ($14.96) and
Reykjavik ($14.01), the high prices hurt business
and our ability to create jobs. Draught beer creates
pub jobs, which is why we need to get the excise on
draught beer reduced.
Sadly, the study only sampled the largest city in each
country examined, so the figure for Brisbane wasn’t
rolled out of the cellar. But given the apparent parallel
with real estate prices in each of these cities you could
bet a brewery your beer dollar wouldn’t go much
further in Queensland than in any of the above.
So to which global metropolis should you fly to get the
most beer for your buck? Try Tashkent in Uzbekistan
($1.04) and Caracas, Venezuela ($0.92).
