14 Energize Guelph asked the Line Dancing Activity Group to participate in a pop-up-in-the-park event in Riverside Park on June 12. We had a great time with approximately 40 dancers. Thanks to all who came out and danced. A big thank you to Kathy Kemp and Rob Hutson for leading the group through several dances and to Ross Knechtel for taking some action shots. The Guelph Chamber of Commerce Community Awards Each year the Chamber of Commerce solicits applications from the community at large for recognition of efforts made in support of the community in a number of different and varied categories. The Awards program came to the attention of the GWSA this past May and application was made to the Chamber entering us in two categories, Community Spirit and Community Innovator. The application was supported by two letters of recommendation as required. That support was provided by the Executive Director of PIN, the new identity for Volunteer Services, and by our own Wendy Kornelsen representing the city. In due course, the Chamber advised us that our application had been accepted and we were one of the three finalists in the Community Innovator category. The award presentations were made at the Chamber’s annual Awards Gala Dinner held at the Delta Hotel on June 28. The GWSA was well represented by the Board of Directors, but we were not called forth to receive the award. That’s not to say we lost. The feather in our cap was and is, that we as an association were recognized as one of the top three in the category. The dinner was great, the camaraderie was great and the feedback from other attendees was better than great with suggestions that the GWSA should have been represented in the Community Spirit category. 15 GWSA Community Support Services Trip to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory On July 6, participants with the GWSA Community Support Services Outreach Program were treated to a trip to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. Riding the coach, having a special guided tour by Conservatory staff, visiting the live butterflies and meeting Cheeco, the resident Green Cheek Conure (a small parrot) were highlights of the afternoon. The therapeutic benefits of providing opportunities for seniors to connect with nature are widely recognized, and Outreach participants returned home from their afternoon happy and energized. This special trip was made possible through a generous donation by The Co-operators, Community Advisory Panel (CAP) Giving Circle. The CAP panel is a forum for The Co-operators to support and bring life to its commitment to the community. Many thanks to The Co-operators for making a difference in supporting the health and well-being of seniors in our community! T S - S <strong>2018</strong>
