the rubbish that lies around us. Join us and belong
of other people’s litter and are willing to do
something about it!
Together we can make a difference and
clean up the environment on our
doorstep.
Purleigh and District
Gardeners’ Society Flower Show
Despite all that the weather has thrown at the gardeners in the
district, they were not defeated and produced yet another
fabulous display at the Purleigh Flower Show. Although the
number of entries in a few of the classes were slightly down on
last year due to the weather, the quality of other exhibits was
outstanding. The displays in the flowers, pot plants, fruit and
vegetables were matched by some amazing handicrafts, some
extremely yummy cookery, some very artistic flower arranging,
and some brilliantly composed photographs. There was also
strong competition in the tallest sun-flower class both in the
adult and the childrenís section and the childrenís craft
competition showed a wealth of talent amongst our youngsters.
Our judges had some difficult decisions to make when picking
the winners!! In total there were over 430 entries which we hope
were enjoyed by all our visitors. Thank-you to all those who put
so much effort into producing all the exhibits and
congratulations to all the winners and all who managed to
defeat the weather!!
Thanks must also go to all the Committee and to the ëwilling
volunteersí who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, organising
the show, putting up marquees and tables, stewarding, taking
money on the door, providing prizes for the raffle and then
dismantling everything after the show. Also we must not forget
the wonderful cakes that were donated to have with our cups of
tea during the afternoon and all those who worked continuously
during both Friday and Saturday producing drinks and washing
up. Without the help and support of so many people this
wonderful tradition would not be able to continue. Please accept
our heartfelt thanks if you were involved in any way with the
show.
infrastructure needed to manage
the impact of development,
including that identified in the
draft Local Plan.
Each section of the Draft Planning
The Council is also consulting on
FOOTBALL FOR 3 - 5 YEAR OLDS
RETURNS THIS WEEKEND
9
These sessions have
proved a great success
within the town and are well
attended. The club uses
qualified coaches to ensure
the children taking part
learn to play football in a
fun way. Club joint Chairmen
Darren Thompson and Chris
Firminger said ‘’our coaches
style ensure the young girls
and boys do not actually
know they are being
coached. Our fun games
and methods mean they
thoroughly enjoy every
session. It is also great to
see that some of the
coaches who assist us
actually came through the
Development Squad when
they were younger. The club
really encourages our young
coaches to get involved and
we can see the results
coming through now. With
the success our England
football team had at the
world cup we are expecting
that there will be a large
number of future stars
attending this season’s
sessions’’.
SCHOOL PASTORS LAUNCHED AT FESTIVAL IN SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS
The School Pastors (L to R): Paul Taylor, Jo Godward, Paul Bonham, Carol Laker, Rob Purnell, Cllr Linda Denston, Sarah Petherick, and Jordine Nunn
(SWF School Pastors Co-Ordinator).
After months of preparation and meetings between Chelmsford
City Council, school representatives, members of churches from
the local community and the police, a new initiative is being
launched at William de Ferrers School, South Woodham Ferrers,
Essex.
The School Pastor team is made up of volunteers from local
churches who have committed themselves to the service of
young people in their community, offering a reassuring and
friendly presence to students who may not feel able to speak
openly to teachers or parents. Their main priority is to build
relationships with all users of the school and to 'Help, Listen and
Care' for all in a non-judgmental way.
Research released by charity Barnardo's in February found that
two-thirds of UK children aged 12-16 experience stress at school
and 42 per cent have worries about the future.
Councillor Susan Sullivan, Cabinet Member for Safer
Communities, said, "While growing up, young people deal with
all kinds of pressures at school, from friendship groups,
relationships and exams, and it is important to have people
around them who they can talk to. School Pastors provide a
listening ear for young people when they need it, assisting their
wellbeing as they navigate the rocky road to adulthood."
Eight members of the community have completed their training.
City Councillor Linda Denston, Paul Taylor, Jo Godward, Paul
Bonham, Carol Laker, Rob Purnell, Sarah Petherick and Jordine
Nunn will be starting in the new school year and others will be
joining them later, once they have finished their training.
The School Pastors scheme has grown out of the long-standing
Street Pastors, who recently celebrated their tenth anniversary in
Chelmsford and who work very closely with the police and
Chelmsford City Council to keep people in the city centre safe at
night. Street, School, Rail and Response Pastors are all the
initiatives of Ascension Trust, which was established in 1993.
The Pastors will be volunteering in the school from September
onwards, but the initiative launched to the local community at
popular festival SWFest on Sunday 26 August, in the grounds of
William de Ferrers School. Members of the team were onsite at
the Street Pastors stand to speak to parents, students and
residents who wished to meet them and find out more.
Councillor Linda Denston, Ward Member for South Woodham
Ferrers (Elmwood and Woodville) said, "We are so excited that
School Pastors will be starting at William de Ferrers School in
September. This initiative is the first in Essex, with two further
schools in Billericay and Brentwood expected to follow shortly. I
am sure schools from other areas of Essex and surrounding
counties will be watching closely. This is a marvellous opportunity
for members of local churches to give their time, experience and
a friendly ear to help young people in their local schools and
build a lasting bond between their communities and schools."
Paul Larner, Deputy Head at William de Ferrers School, said, "We
are incredibly excited about the potential that this initiative
has."
Rich Young Ruler Story
I’m told that if I wanted to catch a monkey I must first stop it jumping into a tree and swinging itself higher
and higher out or my reach. To do this I must first get a nice ripe fruit, and then a jar with a neck that is
only a bit larger than the fruit, put the fruit into the jar and leave the jar where the monkey will see it and
wait. Before long the monkey will come and try and get the fruit, having closed his fist round the fruit –
yes you’ve guessed it, he can’t get his hand out. He won’t be able to swing away from me into the tree.
We are rather like the monkey in that respect. As I walk round South Woodham Ferrers I see lots of lovely
large houses, super big cars, well kept gardens – in other words the signs of affluence. Although I know
that unfortunately in some cases they are only signs and not the reality. But for many we work hard, we use our God given skills
and intellects to progress ourselves and we acquire the affluence that is so evident. A guy who today might very well have lived
in South Woodham Ferrers approached Jesus and asked the question “What might I do to inherit eternal life? I‘ve followed all
the rules of life, never knowingly done harm or injury to anyone, I’ve respected nature and creation, and I’ve been conscious
about keeping the effect of pollution to a minimum” - Yes just like you and many others in our town. But the reply he got came
as a great shock, because Jesus replied “Yes I know you’ve been a good guy and are living an honourable life but if you want
eternal life you will have to sell everything and give the money to the poor and needy folk in the community”.
Jesus didn’t expect the guy to sell the house, the BMW, give up the luxury holidays and all the other trappings of his affluence.
Jesus was wanting him to follow His teachings and His example of true life, and in particular to change his focus from acquiring
all that he was surrounding himself with to having a focus on God. To bring God into his life; into his thoughts and actions. I
can almost hear Jesus saying to him “Get a real life”.
Do you think Jesus would say that to you? The really wonderful thing is that it’s so easy to do. To give oneself to following Jesus,
to worshipping His Father the true and living God to allowing the Holy Spirit to take control of your life. My prayer is that you
will do this. If you do then God’s blessing will make your life even better and you won’t need a big bank balance or piece of plastic
to do it!.
OVER 800 PEOPLE BRAVE THE RAIN FOR SWFEST ’18
SWFest recently returned to South Woodham Ferrers for its
second-year, bringing bank holiday fun to the William de Ferrers
School playing field on Sunday 26 August.
The event offered a range of activities for all ages, including a
free indoor bouncy castle zone, animal petting zoo, craft making
and archery. There was also a line-up of live entertainment
including local talent Beau Langdale, Josh Brough and Will Daly’s
Drum Groups.
The weather may have not been on the festival’s side, but the
residents of South Woodham Ferrers didn’t let that dampen their
spirit. Over 800 people braved the rain to enjoy the free family
event, produced by Chelmsford City Council’s Events Team.
Karen Frett, SWFest Event organiser said “We are thrilled that
this year’s SWFest was another success and myself and Events
team would like to send big thank you to everyone who came
along to have fun, despite the wet weather.”
NEW ASTHMA TREATMENT: Laura Foster reporting for the BBC
tells us that "A new treatment for severe asthma is set to be
made more widely available on the NHS in the UK by the end of
2018. The procedure, bronchial thermoplasty, "melts" away
excess muscle tissue in the lungs using radio frequency, making
breathing easier. Previously there were strict criteria about who
was eligible to receive it. But the National Institute for Health
and Care Excellence (Nice) says it can be offered more routinely,
after it was proved to be safe and effective."
Here's the sting in the tail - LF says that: "Some people may still
not be able to receive it because the final decision about
whether to offer the procedure lies with local health bodies." In
this part of the world the funding for healthcare puts us very
close to the bottom of the league (NHS cash, in case you don't
already know, is not distributed fairly or equally) so we are likely
to be losers in this particular postcode lottery.
Asthma UK explains Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT) in a fairly user
friendly way. We're told that BT is a treatment suitable for some
adults with severe asthma. It's a hospital procedure, not a
medicine. It helps to open up the lungs and make breathing
easier by applying heat using radiofrequency to the inside of the
airways. This is done because asthma causes the lining of the
airways to become inflamed and swollen, narrowing the airways
over time, and making it harder to breathe. In people with
severe asthma this inflammation can eventually cause thickening
of the smooth muscle tissue in the airways, which narrows them
and makes it harder for air to pass through them. BT reduces the
amount of this smooth muscle tissue in the airway walls, making
it less likely that the airways will become narrow in the future.
As for 'suitable cases for treatment ... BT is a possible treatment
option if you’re 18 or older, with severe asthma, and you’re
taking all the relevant medicines for your asthma, exactly as
prescribed, but are still having symptoms. Following discussion
you will be told if you 'fit the criteria' and, just as importantly,
you'll decide if it's the right option for you.
As for possible benefits, BT is not a 'cure' for asthma, so it's likely
you'll have to carry on taking your asthma medicines after
having this treatment. In studies, when people who've had BT
were asked about how much asthma affected their life after the
treatment, they reported some improvement. Research has also
found people who have had BT may use their reliever inhaler
(usually blue) less often. But the long-term risks and benefits of
BT aren't yet fully understood as BT hasn't been around for a
long time and more evidence is needed. The usual word of
caution - unfortunately, BT doesn't work for everyone.
"People say that money is not the key to happiness, but I always
figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made."
Joan Rivers
MEASLES and SNEEZLES. Some time ago Sister Sue and Sister
Katrina wrote to the parents of children who hadn't had all their
recommended vaccinations to remind them that their kids were
at risk given that, during the holiday season, lots of people go
abroad to escape the cold bleak English summer. We were
getting reports of a outbreaks of measles elsewhere in Europe
and we didn't want any of our young patients to become 'a
statistic.'
Here's the background. Sarah Boseley, Health Editor of The
Guardian, wrote on 2nd August that: "A huge surge in measles
cases across Europe has been reported by the World Health
Organisation, which says low MMR vaccination rates are to
blame. More than 41,000 cases of measles have been reported in
the European region between January and June. Last year there
were nearly 24,000 for the whole 12 months, which was the
highest count in any year of the last decade."
SOUTH WOODHAM
FOCUS
FOCUS ON HEALTH
She quoted 'an expert': “We are seeing a dramatic increase in
infections and extended outbreaks,” said Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab,
WHO regional director for Europe. “We call on all countries to
immediately implement broad, context-appropriate measures to
stop further spread of this disease.”
Sarah B goes on to say: "In seven countries (France, Georgia,
Greece, Italy, the Russian Federation, Serbia and Ukraine) more
than 1,000 children and adults have been infected in the first
half of 2018 and at least 37 people have died. The biggest toll
was in the Ukraine, which had 23,000 cases – half the European
total. There were measles-related deaths in all seven countries.
Serbia, with 14, had the most."
She reminds us of the history behind this less than satisfactory
situation: "Confidence in the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella)
jab slumped after the gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield at
the Royal Free hospital in London published a paper in the
Lancet in 1998 wrongly alleging a link between the vaccine and
autism. The paper was retracted and Wakefield, who had not
declared he was taking money from solicitors hoping to pursue
vaccine damage cases, was struck off the medical register for
dishonesty and irresponsibility. Take-up of the MMR by parents
for their children recovered across Europe, but there have been
pockets of hesitancy and denial in every country, creating areas
in which the general immunisation rate is too low to protect
unvaccinated children.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control rubs
salt into the wound: "Measles is a severe disease and since the
beginning of 2016, 57 deaths due to the disease have been
reported in the EU."
Q: Do you know why beer goes through your system so fast?
A: Because it doesn't have to stop to change colour.
Wakefield is a charlatan - so why do his ideas still exert influence.
Harriet Alexander in The Telegraph has one answer. "Russian
trolls and social media bots set out to pour fuel on the fire of
debate about vaccines, a new study has found. Researchers at
George Washington University in Washington DC found that,
using tactics similar to those seen during the 2016 presidential
election, a series of Twitter accounts set out to sow discord. The
accounts tweeted both pro- and anti-vaccine messages, in an
apparent attempt to stir up a fierce debate, while bots that
spread malicious software appeared to use anti-vaccine messages
that inflame strong responses from both sides to attract clicks.
As is usual in these cases she quotes an expert: "The vast majority
of Americans believe vaccines are safe and effective, but looking
at Twitter gives the impression that there is a lot of debate," said
David Broniatowski, an assistant professor at the School of
Engineering and Applied Science. "It turns out that many antivaccine
tweets come from accounts whose provenance is unclear.
These might be bots, human users or 'cyborgs' - hacked accounts
that are sometimes taken over by bots. Although it's impossible
to know exactly how many tweets were generated by bots and
trolls, our findings suggest that a significant portion of the
online discourse about vaccines may be generated by malicious
actors with a range of hidden agendas."
If you still have any doubts as to who has right on their side
when it comes to 'the vaccination debate', then go to the oracle.
President Trump is usually wrong, whatever the subject, and he
has tweeted on numerous occasions that there is a link between
childhood vaccinations and autism (thereby contradicting the
advice of his own experts). I rest my case.
OVER TO YOU.....
Thank You From Your Community
First Responders
It makes a change for us to be thanking the residents and
businesses of Woodham, instead of individuals thanking us!
A belated thank you to Steve’s garage and their customers for
raising £21.20 in the collection tin I collected at the end of June,
all that odd change adds up!
We also received a cheque for £500 from Asda coming first in
their recent community project green token scheme. Thank you
to everyone who ‘voted’ for us and to Asda.
Money raised goes towards funding equipment, advertising for
new recruits and subsidising expenses accrued by trainees. The
money helps a great deal but what we really need is more
volunteers. Everyone seems so busy nowadays, but are you really
too busy to help save someone’s life? If you live or work in
Woodham you can be on call as a CFR while continuing life as
normal. When you get that emergency call, you attend till
relieved by an ambulance crew, and are normally back to home
or work within the hour. Shifts are flexible to suit you with a
minimum requirement of 2 days a month.
You need to be fairly fit and a car owner, for further information
give me a call and I’ll tell you more. Jill 07896 074626
Asda Trolleys
The worst thing Asda have done is removed the £1 coin box from
anywhere. People who take trolleys offsite should be charged a
fee of £10 to do so and we would the be free of trolleys littering
Just a quick thanks to Tom and his team at Spantec for the great
Solve the Riddle
1. A carpenter fixes a square metal plate measuring
48 x 48 to a wooden board in such a way that there are
25 nails on each side of the square. Each nail is the same
How many nails does the carpenter use?
2. A blind man is handed a deck of 52 cards. He is told
that ten of the cards are face up, the rest are face down.
How can he divide the cards into two piles and ensure
that each pile has the same number of cards facing up?
Thank you
I would just like to thank the person who kindly found my very
old cat in Inchbonnie Road. (Focus 857). She’s now home safe
2. He divides the cards into piles of 42 and 10, then turns the whole
side has 23 more.
PANDORAS BOX OPENS TO REVEAL A SILENT CLASSIC AT
CHELMSFORD PICTURE HOUSE
Experience the glamour
and awe of the silver
screen with cult classics
and strong iconic
women at Chelmsford
Picture House. Seducing
us with her onscreen
power is the star of
‘Pandora's Box' (PG,
Tuesday 4 September at
7.30pm), Louise Brooks.
The Hollywood star
topped the bill in the
20s. Thanks to her black,
bobbed hairstyle and
beautiful looks, she was
an iconic symbol of the jazz-age Flapper generation, where the
women threw aside ‘acceptable behaviour' and flouted social
norm; in fact, they smoked, drank and even drove cars, and made
the 1920s roar!
Louise was an actress and dancer who had a brief affair with
Charlie Chaplin. However, it was when Louise left Hollywood for
European films that her star shone at its brightest. The first
movie Louise made in Europe was ‘Pandora's Box', directed by
Georg Pabst, and it opened in 1929. Louise played the central
character, Lulu, and the film depicts a seductive, carefree young
woman whose raw sexuality brings ruin upon herself and those
close to her. ëPandora's Box' had what is considered to have
been one of the earliest portrayals of a lesbian and the film
explored cosmopolitan sexuality. It was maybe due to these
themes considered scandalous in the late 1920s, that the film was
not loved by film critics, although it made Louise a world-wide
star with the general public. The film finally found favour with
the critics in the 1950s, when its scope and forward thinking was
reappraised, and it was seen as trail-blazingly ahead of its time.
Strong women are also celebrated in the ‘Women 100' season at
Chelmsford Picture House with one of the key films of early 1980s
feminism, The Gold Diggers' (U, Thursday 6 September at
7.30pm). The film was the debut feature by director Sally Potter,
who later filmed ‘Orlando', and stars Julie Christie. Noted for
having an all-female crew, Potter's work mixes the avant-garde
with the arthouse in a portrayal of the power of patriarchy and
women as icons and objects. ‘The Gold Diggers' revolves around
a bank clerk who is fascinated between the relationship between
gold and power, and a film star on a quest about her identity and
childhood.
Forthcoming Women 100 films will include the documentarystyle’Born
In Flames', which explores racism, classism, sexism, and
heterosexism in an alternative United States socialist democracy.
Plus ; ‘The Company of Strangers', which provides an insightful
look into ageing and mortality from eight women stranded at a
bus stop. All three films in the Women 100 series can be seen at
just £15 for a season ticket.
An equally strong woman, Edith Rigby, is depicted in the live
drama ‘Woman on Fire' on the Cramphorn Studio's stage on
Friday 7 and Saturday 8 September at 7.45pm. The show is full of
poetic language, sharp wit and defiant spirit: an explosive onewoman
performance of one of the most dangerous females in
the British suffrage movement, Edith Rigby. Although Edith lived
in the shadow of Mrs Pankhurst, she fought hard against social
injustice and denying women the right to vote. Actress Claire
Moore brings Edith vividly to life, and asks: ‘How far will you go
for what you believe in?'
‘Pandora's Box' has now been digitally restored by the British
Film Institute (BFI) and is the first film to be shown as part of the
Picture House's Silent Classics. The movie will be screened in all
its black-and-white splendor on Tuesday 4 September at 7.30pm
JOKE CORNER
Two fish are sitting in a tank. One looks over at the other and says
“Hey do you know how to drive this thing?”
How do you get two whales in a car?
Start in England and drive west.
Once my dog ate all the Scrabble tiles. For days he kept leaving little
messages around the house.
This is my step ladder. I never knew my real ladder.
Last night me and my girlfriend watched three DVDs back to back.
Luckily I was the one facing the telly.
What do you call a parade of rabbits hopping backwards?
A receding hare-line.
