2018 South Dakota Nurses Association 2017 SDNA Annual Meeting Agenda Sunday, October 1st, 3 pm – 4 pm Best Western Kelly Inn – Yankton, SD I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 3:10 by President Margie Washnok, who then recognized and thanked the SDNA District 11 members for all their hard work on this convention. II. Roll Call of Board of Directors was taken by SDNA Secretary Dawn Warren: *SDNA BOD members in attendance: Margie Washnok (President), Nancy Fahrenwald (VP), Dawn Warren (Secretary), Deb Fischer-Clemens (Treasurer), Carrie Clausen-Hansen (GRC Chair), Marie Cissell (Core Issue Task Force Chair), Pat Shaver (VP District 1-3), Eileen Bruner (District 8 & 9), Julie Dangel (District 10), Kathy Jorgensen (District 11), Eric Ollila (SDNA Executive Director). *SDNA BOD members absent: Marlys Volzke (District 4) & Pat Sudbeck (District 5-7) III. IV. Approval of the Agenda- motion to approve by Nancy F, 2nd by Deb F-C. All in favor. Acceptance of Standing Rules- (found on page 22 of 2017 SDNA Annual convention book)- approved V. Acceptance of Cultural Covenants- approved VI. VII. Approval of October 2, 2016 Annual Meeting Minutes- motion to approve by Carrie CH, 2nd by Kay Foland- all in favor. Treasurer’s Report: Deb Fischer Clemens (found on pg. 24-26 of 2017 SDNA Annual convention book). Deb summarized her Treasurer’s Report, as well as the Budget vs Fiscal Year End Report. The greatest portion of the SDNA income is from dues revenue. Eric O added that the District 1-3 income is actually $1000.00. Motion to approved treasurer’s report by Christie Riggs., 2nd by Eileen Bruner. All in favor. VIII. Executive Director Report: Eric Ollila (found on pg. 27-28 of 2017 SDNA Annual convention book). Eric referred attendees to the report, and also reported that SDNA membership numbers are up. IX. District Reports (found in 2017 SDNA Annual convention book). No additions were given to any of the reports. a) Districts 1-3: Linda De Long- no report submitted b) District 4: Marlys Volzke- pg. 29 c) District 5 - 7: Pat Sudbeck- no report submitted d) District 8 and 9: Eileen Brunner- pg. 30 e) District 10: Julie Dangel- pg. 31 f) District 11: Kathy Jorgensen- pg.31 X. Committee Reports (found in 2017 SDNA Annual convention book). a) Awards Committee: Joanne Tieman- pg. 32, with no additions b) Education Committee: Rebecca Nichols- pg. 32, with no additions c) Government Relations Committee: Carrie Clausen Hansen- pg. 33. Carrie reported on the following additional information: Carrie and Eric O attended the ANA Lobbyist meeting in Washington D.C. last month. There were 35 states represented. SDNA members are encouraged to subscribe to the ANA “RN Action” and “Capital Beat” emails. Some other things that came up to watch: 55% of states allowing paramedics to do in-home care, and there is a proposal in one area to change the name of veterinary technicians to “veterinary nurse.” d) Nominations Committee: Linda Burdette- pg. 34, with no additions 18
2018 South Dakota Nurses Association e) N-STAT: Deb Fischer Clemens- pg. 34, with no additions f) Core Issues Task Force: Marie Cissell- pg. 35, with no additions XI. XII. Coalition and Liaison Reports a) SDNA Political Action Committee (PAC): Julie Dangel reported that last year the PAC gave $3050.00 to legislative candidates. PAC is now raising funds again for this year by having a raffle fundraiser of a blue Calvin Klein purse, infinity scarf, Riddles necklace, and more. Raffle tickets are $5.00 for 1 ticket, of 3 tickets for $10.00. b) SD Nurses Foundation (SDNF): Tom Stenvig reported that the SDNF has awarded over $31,000 in scholarships. SDNA members are encouraged to continue to donate to the SDNF. Other Reports a) Board of Nursing Report: Gloria Damgaard (found on page 36-37 of 2017 SDNA Annual Convention book). Gloria also highlighted two things: First) the legislative activity in 2017 and success of nurse practitioners in S.D. now having independent practice. Second) the Celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the SDBON that occurred this year. b) Center for Nursing Workforce Report: Linda Young (found on pg 38-39 of 2017 SDNA Annual Convention book). Linda also reported that the 2nd cohort of the Nursing Leadership Academy is occurring in Rapid City. The 3rd course will be offered in the Spring of 2018 in Sioux Falls. XIII. Unfinished Business- none XIV. New Business a) Tellers Report and Introduction of New Leadership- Dawn Warren announced those elected into SDNA Leadership open positions: *President- Margie Washnok *Vice President- Nancy Fahrenwald *Treasurer- Christina Plemmons *Nominations Committee: Sandra Welling (Chair), Vicky Buhr, and Alham Abuatiq *Following announcements, a motion was made by Carrie CH to destroy the 2016 ballots, with 2nd by Julie D. All in favor. b) Discussion about the recent hurricane tragedies in Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida, and how nursing and nursing students may be affected. c) Reminder that Nurses Day at the Legislature is Feb 5-6, 2018. d) The Bylaws Committee is in need of one more member. Anna Berry agreed to be on this. e) The Awards Committee is in need of one more member. Joanne Tiemann agreed to be on this. f) Invitation to 2018 SDNA Convention- All are invited to attend the 2018 SDNA convention Oct. 7 & 8 in Brookings. It will be coordinated by District 8 & 9. The theme is “Healthy Families, Healthy Patients, Healthy Nurses” g) The SDNA Lead Nurse Planner position is open as Becky is stepping down. Christina Plemmons agreed to take over this position. h) Reminder that Avera is hosting an Opioid Epidemic convention Oct.18 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. i) On October 25 Margie W will be attending a meeting with the S.D. State Medical Association to have discussions about the opioid addiction crisis in S.D. In 2017 S.D. had 27 deaths related to opioid overdose. j) Resolutions- Thank you to District 11 for hosting the 2017 SDNA convention. k) Adjourn- Kathy Jorgensen motioned to adjourn the meeting at 3:50 with 2nd by Eileen B.
