2018 South Dakota Nurses Association 2018 ANA Membership Assembly Report Eileen Bruner-Halvorson, Tom Stenvig, and Eric Ollila We had the opportunity to represent SDNA at the annual ANA Membership Assembly meeting on June 21-23, 2018 in Washington, DC. The two days of business included the following highlights. • Routine updates and reports were provided by ANA Enterprise entities including the American Nurses Foundation and the American Nurses Credentialing Center, as well as the American Academy of Nursing and the National Student Nurses Association. • Dialogue forums were held on the following topics to inform the development of ANA policies and positions: ú Secondary Opioid Exposure Considerations in Caring for Patients With Overdose ú ANA Presidential Endorsement Process ú An Ethics Debate: The Right to Die • Recommendations were developed from the dialog forums and discussed during the meeting calling for ANA to: ú ú ú SDNA COMMITTEE REPORTS Identify informational tools to inform students and nurses about responding to patients who have potential opioid overdose, and advocate for funding and other support for research and development of evidence-based protocols regarding opioid overdose. Refer consideration of the ANA presidential endorsement procedure back to the ANA Board of Directors for development of a revised proposal following further input from ANA members and stakeholders. Incorporate the following into a revised position statement on aid in dying: Nurses must respect patients’ right to request aid in dying; nurses must be knowledgeable of the law regarding aid in dying in the state or territory in which they practice; while nurses are ethically permitted to participate in aid in dying, in states or territories where it is legal, they retain the right to conscientiously object; nurses must be able to provide information on aid in dying and provide emotional support to patients and families who face this decision at the end of life. • By acclamation, the Membership Assembly endorsed a statement adopted by the ANA Board of Directors urging the Administration to immediately end the forced separation of children from families at the border and calling for reunification of separated children and families without delay. • On Saturday, June 23, ANA hosted a Policy Café focused on providing feedback on relevant, older official ANA position statements, plus opioids and the evolution of occupational licensure. There were six stations (topics listed below) at which attendees visited three stations for 10 minutes to share input: 1. Registered Nurses Utilization of Nursing Assistive Personnel in All Settings 2. Evolution of Licensure 3. The Opioid Epidemic: The Evolving Role of Nursing 4. Sexual Harassment 5. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention 6. Equipment/Safety Procedures to Prevent Transmission of Bloodborne Diseases • The Membership Assembly elected Ernest Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN, of the North Carolina Nurses Association as the association’s next president. ANA’s Membership Assembly also elected four other members to serve on the 9-member board of directors. The newly-elected board members are: Secretary Stephanie Pierce, PhD, RN, CNE, of the Louisiana State Nurses Association; Director-at-Large Tonisha Melvin, DNP, CRRN, NP-C, of the Georgia Nurses Association; Director-at-Large Varsha Singh, MSN, APN, of the New Jersey State Nurses Association; Director-at-Large Staff Nurse Jennifer Gil, BSN, 40
2018 South Dakota Nurses Association SDNA COMMITTEE REPORTS RN, of ANA Massachusetts. The term of service for Dr. Grant and other newly elected leaders will begin January 1, 2019. Overall, the business was important but did not generate major controversy, with the exception of the Presidential endorsement process for which it is apparent members have strong opinions both pro and con.
