JOIN THE BIG SLEEP OUT!
Local charity CHESS Homeless is asking the community of Essex to
swap their duvet and grab a sleeping bag to experience a night
out under the stars, by taking part in their Annual Sleep Out.
This year’s event takes place on Friday 30th November from
7.30pm in the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral.
The charity is encouraging you, your friends, family and company
to take on the challenge and help raise vital funds so they can
continue supporting single homeless adults from Chelmsford and
Essex.
And if you can’t make the CHESS one then why not “Host Your
Own Sleep Out” it’s so simple you can even hold it in your own
back garden.
Homeless is on the increase and can happen to anyone. CHESS
believes that everyone should have a warm safe environment to
stay, with meals, drinks and hygiene facilities along with the
support they need to help them turn their lives around.
Lindsay Hurrell, CHESS Fundraiser says “Our Annual Sleep Out
Event by no means replicates what it’s like for someone who is
homeless and sleeping rough. But it does give you an insight
into what it’s like: the damp, the cold and the struggle to carry
on with minimal sleep. With homelessness on the increase and
many of those being young adults, we really need the support of
the community to help raise funds, so we can continue to
support single homeless adults from Essex”.
For further information and to register to take part visit
Purleigh and District
Gardeners’ Society
At our September meeting we welcomed Deb Hart who came
to talk about willow weaving. Deb started life as a
horticulturalist at Writtle College and got involved in willow
weaving whilst working there. She now weaves willow
instillations and teaches willow weaving as a full time career.
She has been fortunate to be asked to weave willow structures
for show gardens at Chelsea and for schools and parks. She
recently demonstrated at the Hyde Hall Design and Craft Fair.
Deb’s talk introduced us to the varieties of willow that can be
used for weaving and how these are grown and prepared. She
followed this with a power point presentation which
introduced us to a variety of willow instillations from around
the worlds including some which were made from living
willow.
Deb then went on to demonstrate willow weaving and made
a 4 foot high obelisk which she kindly donated to the raffle.
collected, all woven from plant material, some which were
antique and some modern - and which had originated from
various parts of the world. This was an excellent and
informative evening which was enjoyed by all the members.
During the evening members were able to purchase plants
which other members had brought along from their own
gardens.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday October 15th at
7.30pm in Purleigh Village Hall. Our speaker for the evening is
Nick Dobson on the theme of ‘A Funny Thing Happened on
the way to the Potting Shed’. This promises to be an amusing
evening around the theme of gardening. Visitors are very
welcome to join us for £2.00 for the evening.
Jill Challis
Finally, we were shown a wide variety of objects that Deb had
Outstanding Night – Huw Williams
A night of outstanding
entertainment ahead
with the irrepressible
Huw Williams at The
Blue Boar Hotel on Sun
14 Oct at 7.30pm. One
of the most underrated
songwriters who marries
beautiful melodies with
poignant lyrics, he is that
rare breed that can write both tender and humourous songs,
astutely observing human behaviour and the evening will be
guaranteed to be one of warmth and uproarious banter.
says, “Huw Williams is a wonderful orator and communicator,
his openness with his audience encourages instant engagement
and he’s a fabulous guitarist too. We’re very much looking
forward to welcoming him back to Maldon after several years!
It’s really a one-off chance to experience this brilliant
performer.
Tickets are £12 from Maldon TIC 01621 856503 or on-line at
www.mactheatre.org.uk
Huw Williams started his professional career as a
singer/songwriter. He toured and recorded as part of the duo
Huw and Tony Williams, whose songs were covered by many
other artists in the USA and Europe, including Fairport
Convention whose version of Summer Before the War and
Simon Nicol’s Rosemary’s Sister brought him to a much wider
audience. He has also worked as a broadcaster producing and
presenting programs for BBC in the UK. Folk Wales accurately
sums his performance up, ‘Well-crafted and finely-honed
songs, each one an absolute belter. Many songwriters could
take a lesson from his brilliant chord progressions and his
thoughtful and entertaining lyrics, but his magic touch just
about seals it and cajoles the listening public to come back for
more – and more and more. All this along with dry and
hilarious humour.’ Nicola Esson from organisers, macTheatre
LITTLE BADDOW WI REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2018
On September 6th, our Centenary celebrations continued for our members with a posh Cream Tea being served
at the meeting, The Committee worked very hard to organise this, dressing the tables with our own china Tea
Sets, Coffee pots and Table linen. There were vases of fresh flowers and bountiful supplies of finger sandwiches,
delicate cakes and beautiful scones with clotted cream and jam. Then we were thoroughly entertained by our
speaker Jane Malyon, with an interesting and interactive session on the etiquette and history of the Great
British Afternoon Tea.
At our October 4th meeting we will be hearing from John Stirling with a talk entitled “From Toy Town to Buckingham Palace”. He
was practically born on stage, and has spent his life in theatre and television. I don't know if he spent any time playing the Tail end
of a Donkey in his career, but he now spends his life rescuing Donkeys.
And looking forward to our November 1st meeting, where we will hear from Seona Ford, Chair of the DLS Society, about the Life
and works of the Fascinating Dorothy L Sayers. Dorothy was born in Oxford, bought a house for her mum in Witham, where she
became a resident herself for the last 28 years of her life. A renowned crime writer of books and plays, Dorothy also penned poetry.
A Christian Humanist, she concentrated the later years of her life Religious themes; translations and essays.
We hold our meetings on the
first Thursday of the month,
at the Memorial Hall Little
Baddow from 2pm till 4.30pm
We are a very friendly group
of all ages with a great
committee to keep our WI full
of fun and diversity, Coach
trips to and Art & craft days,
also a Knit/crochet/sew/craft
subgroup where you can help
us with our latest charity
project or just chat and do
your own thing on the second
Thursday of the month.
l
Purchase fruit and vegetables which are loose rather than
in plastic packaging
Use a razor with replaceable blades rather than a
disposable one
Cllr Malcolm Sismey, Cabinet Member for Waste
Management and Recycling said ‘We are urging residents to
think about the products they buy and whether they can use
or buy alternatives. Less plastic means less to dispose of,
which saves money and resources and it’s better for the
environment and wildlife.
Chelmsford City Council are running a campaign over the next
couple of months to encourage residents to reduce the amount
of single use plastic they use.
Love Your Chelmsford, the Council’s programme to encourage
residents, community groups and organisations to help improve
the local environment in and around Chelmsford, aims to raise
more awareness on plastic pollution. Love Your Chelmsford will
be hosting several roadshows to help you on your way to cutting
down on single use plastic with some advice and free give-aways.
The council already organises a number of litter picks and river
clean-ups throughout the year and the amount of single-use
plastic that is collected both on the ground and in the river is
shocking.’
Let us know what you are doing to cut out single use plastic
300 million tonnes of plastic is manufactured every year, half of
which is discarded after use and every day approximately 8
million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into oceans.
Plastic pollution, as seen highlighted on recent TV documentaries
is a worldwide problem since it is a long-lasting pollutant which
does not breakdown, polluting and damaging the environment
and wildlife.
There are many ways you can reduce how much single use plastic
you use:
USING A REUSABLE BAG
l Using a reusable water bottle. There are now several
locations in Chelmsford where you can fill up your water
bottle for free (See www.refill.org.uk)
l Refusing plastic straws when out and about. There are also
alternative metal and paper options available to buy to use
at home.
l Try not to use plastic cutlery
l Use a sandwich box instead of cling film
Friends of St. Mary’s Church Woodham Ferrers (FOSM)
are delighted to announce a concert by The David Pickthall
Big Band on Sunday July 14th 2019 at 3p.m. David
Pickthall MBE and his Big Band only usually meet up to
perform four concerts for charity a year but have very kindly
agreed to make St. Mary’s an exception! Their repertoire is
drawn from the classic swing sounds of the 1930’s right
through to contemporary ballads and film themes. The full
band with strings and vocalists coupled with church
acoustics makes for an incredible musical experience. For
more details and to hear some of their recordings you can
visit www.davidpickthall.co.uk
Friends of St. Mary’s decided to opt for an afternoon concert
to maximise accessibility. Tickets will be available from
January 2019.
They will be on sale at the church on Tuesday mornings from
10 a.m. -12 noon or by calling Sharon on 07773 644326 .
Tickets cost £11 Under 12’s and FOSM members pay £5 and
this price includes homemade
interval refreshments. All proceeds will go towards the
restoration of the Bell Tower. This promises to be an
exceptional occasion – we hope to see you there.
‘KIND OF BLUE’ PLAYS JIMMY SMITH
Once jazz bands became static, and were used for dancing in a
hall (or in a bar), rather than in a march, they were able to
incorporate piano players into their personnel.
Consequently there have been many great jazz pianists in the
20th century (for example Jelly Roll Morton at the beginning, to
Herbie Hancock at the end).
Some of these performers (e.g. "Fats" Waller and "Count Basie")
"dabbled" in playing the organ, but these were few and far
between.
In 1935 the Hammond electric organ was invented and at first it
was used in churches, but club owners realised that an organ trio
was cheaper than hiring a big band.
The most famous of these musicians was Jimmy Smith. He played
a Hammond B-3 organ and became world renowned in the '60s
by combining jazz with soul.
The sound he achieved, appealed to many jazz and pop fans, in
a time when Afro-Americans were looking back to their "roots".
Several musicians, such as Georgie Fame and Booker T and the
M.G.s were influenced by him, and the Hammond organ became
an integral part of R.& B. groups.
Thanks to modern technology, the Yamaha keyboard as used by
"Kind of Blue" (a local modern jazz group) today, can replicate
the sounds of the Hammond organ, and if you want to hear
some Jimmy Smith (e.g."the Preacher" and "Midnight Blue")
come to the Bell pub in Woodham Ferrers on Monday 22nd (not
the 29th) October, 8.30-11, sandwiches and entry are free.
You're bound to get a friendly welcome, so, see you there!!
Severe Fire Littlecroft,
South Woodham Ferrers
Dear Editor,
May I through your publication say how grateful I am personally,
for the dedication to protect our local community by Essex Fire
& Rescue Service. Without the fast response by SWF wholetime
fire fighters, the fire at Littlecroft (SWF) could have been so much
more devastating. The community owe a debt of gratitude to
our local fire fighters for protecting our Town from fire and
other emergencies.
I hope everyone that has been displaced by this fire have now
been found alternative accommodation and that the apartment
block can be repaired and made habitable as soon as possible.
I also understand, SWF Town Council’s Emergency Rest Centre
procedures were activated by CCC Community Safety Officer to
provide emergency shelter to those evacuated during the fire.
Thank you once again to SWF firefighters, the Fire & Rescue
Service & the Town Council for their commitment to our
community.
SOUTH WOODHAM
FOCUS

South 18 Woodham Focus
South Woodham Focus
We hear a lot of talk these days of a 'work/life' balance, and the importance of getting that balance
right. In the Gospels Jesus often makes the point that times of solitude are essential for our spiritual life
and our sense of well-being.
The world we live in now has never been noisier or calculated to keep us 'busy'. Many of us can
remember when the television finished at midnight; when there weren't such things as email and social
media; when the only telephone you had was plugged into a wall. Life was simpler, we weren't always
'switched-on', it was so much easier to be alone, to lose ourselves in our thoughts, to use our imagination,
and, to have a spiritual life.
There was a programme on the radio last week about what smartphones have done to our kids. In the
trailer for the programme a few facts were mentioned: 80% of kids under sixteen have a smartphone;
the smartphone has induced in them feelings of anxiety, of negative body-image, an inability to imagine, and the stress of being
constantly 'in touch'. Why, it has to be asked, does a child under sixteen, need a phone that does anything more than receive
and make phone-calls?
But what applies to children and technology could apply to so many of us: we've become slaves to it: it rules us. It can't be a
coincidence that with the rise of technology has come a fall in religious observance: God has been displaced by all-day-andnight
television, the computer, the smartphone. And yet we know, if so many surveys are right, that we're less happy today than
we've ever been, children included. If that's the case, you'd think people would use all this technology less, but they don't,
because technology has become an addiction: how easy it is to send a text, surf the internet, look at thousands of photos, rather
than read a book, speak to a friend, go for a walk or, indeed, to pray. In short, we haven't got the balance right anymore and
the simple truth is, if we replace God with something else, we'll be unhappy.
That radio programme is perhaps an indication of a reappraisal, or a realisation, that our relationship with technology is out of
kilter, and, if we're to be happy we have to spend a lot less time staring at screens and having our lives run by geeks in California.
As Christians too, we have to find the right balance and give God his fair share of our time, which is simply what prayer is:
making the time to talk to him, and listen to him. But to do that we have to have times of quiet, without distractions, especially
the distractions of modern technology. God isn't interested in texts or emails or messages on Instagram: he simply wants us to
have a real relationship with him, a relationship based on that straightforward social-medium we call 'prayer': we talk to him
and he talks to us, directly, not via a screen.
'SELF-POISONING' AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE. This week I'm raiding
the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP) where we're reliably
informed that self-poisoning (e.g. overdosing) accounts for up to
90% of all cases of self-harm among young people. A large study,
analysing over 40,000 poisoning episodes, has found considerable
increases in the rates of self-harm from taking readily-available
substances, including paracetamol, alcohol, NSAIDs (such as
ibuprofen), and prescribed antidepressants and opioids. The biggest
rise in self-poisoning was found in 16–18 year-old females, with a
sharp rise in paracetamol poisoning among 10–15 year-old females
in the most recent 2 years of the study. For poisoning involving
alcohol, the biggest increase was among females aged 19–24 years.
Self-poisoning among males showed the biggest increase in the
same age group.
Parents are warned that they need to be aware that substances
often found in domestic medicine cupboards are frequently used for
self-harm. It's a good idea to keep all medicines/drugs out of reach
and under lock and key when there are children and young people
in the house. We doctors (and other prescribers) are advised to give
careful thought to the quantities of drugs prescribed to young
people. This presents us with a problem - if you make it difficult for
young people to get the medication they need for the treatment of
a long-term condition then they will often stop following 'doctors
orders' ... whereas if we dish out large quantities we give them the
wherewithal to overdose.
I bought the world’s worst thesaurus yesterday. Not only is it terrible,
it’s terrible!
OLDER PATIENTS AT RISK OF ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE DRUG
INTERACTIONS. The BJGP advises GPs and pharmacists to ask about
non-prescription drug use, such as evening primrose oil, St John’s
wort, ginkgo, glucosamine, and omega3 fish oil, due to risk of drug
interactions.
Polypharmacy (taking a variety of different medications) is common
among older adults, with increasing numbers also using prescription
drugs with herbal medicinal products (HMPs) and dietary
supplements. There is no reliable evidence from the UK on
concurrent use of HMPs and dietary supplements with prescription
drugs in older adults - so we're asked to play it safe.
The difficulty is that 'alternative medications' are often not
standardised (so it's difficult to be sure of the exact ingredients
and/or the exact amount that they contain.) Moreover, it's frequently
quite difficult to discover which ones interact with other alternative
medicines - or with prescription drugs. I suppose the safe advice is
'Try not to take alternative medicines when you're taking
prescription medicines unless you know for sure that they are safe.'
Cosmetic surgery used to be such a taboo subject. Now you can talk
about Botox and nobody raises an eyebrow
MOST MEDICATIONS FOR PERSISTENT COUGH DON'T WORK.
The BNF (British National Formulary) has said for years that most
over-the-counter cough remedies are a waste of time and money ...
but what about prescribed medicines? These have a better
reputation 'within the profession' but the BJGP now says that: Drug
treatments for a cough which persists after a respiratory infection,
including budesonide, fluticasone, salbutamol plus ipratropium, and
montelukast, (all of them 'bona fide' medications) have no benefit.
Some children with asthma will, present with a cough rather than a
wheeze - so they would not be included in the above advice as,
following diagnosis, genuine asthma treatments will help their
cough in most cases.
It's the people who are perfectly fit and well but who get a chest
infection and then keep coughing in a way that irritates them, their
friends, families and work colleagues that the BJGP is talking about.
They can try steam inhalations but, if that fails, they should take up
residence in the shed at the end of the garden until nature has
effected a cure. (The BJGP people don't actually say that ... but I'm
pretty sure that's what was in the back of their minds when they
wrote the piece.)
I hate that feeling after surgery when you're not sure if you're
awake or asleep ... or if you operated on the right patient.
FLU JABS - the local surgeries have had their deliveries of flu vaccine
Briefly, all people aged 65 years and over (including those becoming
I bought some shoes from a drug dealer. I don’t know what he laced
them with, but I was tripping all day!
ASTHMA DRUGS - STEROIDS. In asthma, steroids are lifesavers. They
are usually given in small doses targeted at the bits of you that most
need them (i.e. the airways) via an inhaler or similar.
Sometimes inhaled steroids are not enough and oral steroids are
needed (and these are often in tablet form.) Because these are
absorbed from the gut and pass into the bloodstream they are
spread around the body - so they end up in your big toe or your
earlobe (or your 'whatever') as well as your lungs ... so they have to
be given in higher doses and are more likely to produce side effects
... which is why we tend to use them in the smallest possible doses
for the shortest possible time. When used appropriately they are
magical in their effect - the child that is awake all night coughing
rapidly becomes able to sleep through (which in turn means that the
poor parents also get a good night's sleep.) They also work well in
other conditions - including some skin conditions - so it's easy to see
why, in the early days they were dished out like Smarties.
The problem arises in those with very severe asthma who need to
be on high doses of steroids over prolonged periods - perhaps
months or years. These people can get quite marked side effects
which is why researchers have been searching for an alternative for
years.
Kat Lay takes up the story with an alarmist article in The Times
captioned: "‘Toxic’ asthma drugs making thousands sick." She goes
on in the same vein: "Tens of thousands of Britons with asthma are
suffering debilitating side- effects from their drugs, a patient charity
has said. Patients suffer weight gain, difficulty sleeping and
tearfulness from oral steroids, research from Asthma UK found, with
some even developing cataracts, diabetes and brittle bones. Others
said that they felt depressed or suicidal. It is calling for widespread
use of a new generation of drugs called monoclonal antibodies that
have been shown to cut the number of asthma attacks by 40 to 50
per cent in suitable patients. While some of the drugs are already
approved for NHS use, doctors have been slow to adopt them." So
... SHOCK, HORROR - let's burn down the factories that make these
poisonous pills and potions!
The key words are 'in suitable patients'... i.e. not the vast majority of
people whose exposure to oral/systemic steroids is minimal. In other
words, we're talking about patients with severe/'brittle' asthma at
this point in time - people who are treated in specialist units.
For the rest of us, here's some advice from Asthma UK entitled
'Steroids in brief.'
• Many children and most adults with asthma are prescribed
medicine that contains 'corticosteroids' - a copy of the steroids
produced naturally in your body.
• Steroids help to calm and prevent inflammation in the airways by
blocking the effects of certain chemicals your immune system uses to
'kick-start' inflammation.
• Taking steroid medicines makes it less likely that you will
experience asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and
shortness of breath. It also means you’re less likely to react to asthma
triggers, such as pollen or pollution.
• Like all prescription drugs, there is a risk of side effects when you
take steroids. But you'll only ever be prescribed them if the benefits
outweigh the risks.
SWF U15’S v OLD BRENTWOOD’S U15’S
This week Woodham hosted Old Brentwood’s in what would be
a tough second game of the season.
Old Brentwood’s came with 15 players due to loosing several
over the last few days to injury via school fixtures. With a strong
squad, 12 of who play for Essex, the league 1 team were going
to be fearsome opponents for the league 2 Woodham in the first
cup match of the season.
Woodham kicked off the match and both sides spent the
opening minutes testing each other’s defence. Woodham
looked good in the tackle but OB’s were stronger with some
larger more physical players. The scrums were fairly evenly
matched but OB’s were far more drilled and effective at the
breakdown.
This strength showed as they attacked the Woodham defence
and swung the ball out wide to push up on the Woodham 22.
The ball pulled back in and after drawing Woodham at the
breakdown OB’s let loose their back line and easily pushed over
the line for the first try of the match. With the Conversion the
visitors were up 0-7 inside 4 minutes.
OB’s continued to apply the pressure and although Woodham
were able to win the ball they were not able to capitalise on the
win, and kept cutting back in to contact rather than shipping the
ball wide. OB’s had another break and again crossed the
Woodham line. This time the conversion was missed and the
score 0 – 12 to visitors.
against OB’s. However, they still couldn’t seem to find the chink
in the OB’s armour to push through and cross the visitors line.
OB’s again getting the better of the Woodham side by drawing
them in and working quick ball through the running backline
crossed for their 3rd try at 14 minutes. The conversion
completed the score now 0 – 19.
Four more trys followed at 17, 22, 24 and 28 minutes with 3
conversions completed, Woodham’s head had dropped and the
score line of 0 – 45 at half time didn’t reflect the effort put in by
the team.
OB’s continued to apply pressure in the second half and a quick
ball out to their wing and too much space being left available
allowed them in for their last try of the day. The conversion
good the match was won 0 - 52 to OB’s.
After a short break both sides agreed to continue as a training
game, played in the spirt of the core values of Rugby.
Woodham’s man of the match this week went to George who’s
work rate and tackling in the front row was impressive.
Woodham did manage a consolation try through Bullet and the
conversion was completed by Ox.
Plenty to take for today’s game and to implement at trying next
week. If you’re interested in trying rugby and want to join the
boys then come down on the 7th October at midday where
you’re sure of a warm welcome, or contact Head Coach & Youth
SWFU UNDER 14 WANDERERS MATCH REPORT
Wanderers seal cup victory with five minute
goal flurry
South Woodham Ferrers United under 14 Wanderers have
struggled to get past the opening stages of cup competitions in
recent years with some tough fixtures against loftier opponents.
After a delay to the start of the season their inaugural match
was a home County Cup tie against unknown adversaries Harlow
Kestrels. Tom started as he left off the 2017-18 campaign with an
early shot just wide, followed by plenty of Wanderers’ lively
possession passing to welcome in new but familiar squad
members Bobby, Harvey and Harrison. Luke made a powerful
clearance when Harlow surged forwards, sending Harrison off
on a rapid race down the left wing, but his zippy cross was too
fast for the forwards to reach. Charlie R impressed in his initial
season as the named keeper after volunteering to stand in with
such success last year, making the first of several calm, competent
saves under pressure, happy in the knowledge that Will, Luke
and Harvey’s headers saw off most attacking attempts. Tom put
in a hopeful punt from the half way line, forcing the Harlow
keeper to react quickly to the surprise element in Wanderers’
game. Jacob sent a classy through-ball to Harrison to prompt the
keeper into action again before Will’s trademark mighty free
kick from the half way line made it three saves in quick
succession. This was followed up by a fourth anxious, close-range
parry when Charlie W snatched a chance as the ball pinged off
players in the box before the half time whistle.
Keith’s half time inspirational team talk did the trick to convert
Wanderers’ dominant possession into goals: Harrison opened his
Wanderers’ account when a hopeful shot foiled the keeper. They
were soon two-nil up as passing between the midfielders set up
the sort of chance relished and converted by Tom. Alfie’s long
range attempt rebounded off the post and Tom pounced on the
ball to leave the bewildered keeper to pick the ball out of the
back of the net for the third time in five minutes. Daniel enjoyed
his more attacking role, shooting wide, while Harrison had
another chance calmly passed out by the keeper, only for
Harrison to steal the ball and set up Freddie for Wanderers’
fourth. Harlow dug deep, bringing Harvey, Luke and Charlie W
into the action and occasionally forcing Charlie R to demonstrate
his solid handling, but Wanderers continued to push forwards:
Jacob’s instinctive shot hit the bar, Mack’s telling runs down the
wing enabling Matthew, Daniel and Tom to link brilliantly while
Freddie was consistent in his demonstration of positive mentality
and skilful footwork throughout. Overall Wanderers put on a
splendid competitive opening display and uncharacteristically
landed a much-deserved place in a cup second round draw. All of
that hard work in the summer seems to be paying off with no
weak links in a proper footballing team.
Squad: Alfie, Bobby, Charlie R, Charlie W, Daniel, Freddie,
Harrison, Harvey, Jacob, Luke, Mack, Matthew, Tom, Will
HATFIELD PEvEREL FC U16 PANTHERS 1 – 6 SWFU FC U16 LIONS
Blackwater and Dengie League Division Two
League Cup Qualifying Match.
On a bright cool day in Hatfield Peverel, SWFU Lions had their
first League Cup group match.
We wanted the team to play more football on the ground and
to boss the midfield with high intensity, so Hatfield were under
pressure from the kick off. The first ten minutes set the tone for
the whole match, with every player doing their bit winning their
battles.
From the off they were testing the keeper and on the eighth
minute mark, Alex scored a deserved first goal. With flowing
passes from H and Dan Washer to wingers Alex and Michael,
(with Joe up front), the Lions produced numerous shots on
target which the Hatfield keeper did well to keep out - until the
fifteenth minute when Joe opened his account.
Hatfield tried to up their intensity, but Oli had the measure of
them making some fine catches, reading the game and sweeping
when necessary. The defence today consisting of Callum,
James.O, Morgan and Josh were immense. The strikers tried their
hardest to force a way through but every time they attacked, we
had a defender holding them up waiting for a chance to nick the
ball and time and again they were successful.
Hatfield started launching long balls. With Eddie in defensive
midfield he calmly headed the ball to one of our players in space.
Martin came on and added to the intensity, from a corner he
hooked the ball back in the penalty area and Joe got on the end
of it and hit the post.
Halftime 0-2 to the Lions.
The second half got under way and it wasn’t long before Alex
moved into space and his shot was blocked by the keeper.
Keeping the pressure on to extend the visitors’ lead, H went on
a great run twisting and turning, beating and drawing players,
and then pulled back a delightful pass for Alex to tap in.
Hatfield kept pushing and from a corner Callum cleared the ball
for Joe to collect which he turned, run on and buried in the
corner of the goal. This was soon followed by Alex on the left
helping win the ball back and delivering a great cross for Joe to
control and score again. With a few changes, Dan L was clearing
up and making slick passes and James D was working hard up
and down the wing.
Hatfield were attacking more, now trying to get something from
the game and a fine shot from the right beat Oli. This enabled the
Lions to find more space and H and Alex were giving the defence
a hard time. Joe was slipped through and he just missed wide.
Under some more pressure, Oli made some fine saves and his goal
kicks were always great. Joe, Martin and Alex combined with
quick passing giving Joe a shot at goal that again hit the post.
Finally nearing the end, Joe broke through their defence and
rounded the keeper to tap into an empty goal.
A fantastic team display that all players should give themselves
a pat on the back. Their combined efforts meant there was only
going to be one result today.
Next Sunday, The Lions return to League action away to
Galleywood Falcons.
The U16 Lions today were: Oliver, Josh, Callum, James O,
Morgan, Edward, Dan W, Thomas ‘H’, Alex, Michael, Joe, James
D, Martin and Dan L.
SWFU FC U16 Lions are proud to be sponsored by ‘Chelmsford
Audi’.
