Either
design or
resign!
To keep your business survived at today’s tough conditions you
need some major talents and administrative policies. If you
stay unchanged or go with regular ways you will not be able to
survive. There are financial difficulties, raw material supply problems,
very harsh competition conditions and above all qualified
personnel shortage.
To survive… You need novelties, innovations and originals…
You have to develop your original designs. You should be different
and distinct. Once in a while imitative works would work
although they were not works of honest people, however, they
don’t work any more. You have to be unique with your own and
original designs, with your style, presentation, marketing ways,
packaging, shipping and even delivery and after sale… Your
designs should be your identity. Your line should show itself so
much so that after some time related people should recognize
that the product belongs to you without seeing the label.
Ayça Sarıoğlu | Editor
ayca.sarioglu@img.com.tr
In home and contract textiles, especially in the latter, original
designs will help you to build up your brand image and it is the
rule of playing the game especially to the future. It is your ID in
the long run. Your original, but quality, designs might be your
most valuable assets. To develop these designs either you will
have talented technical staff or you will outsource to the best
designers, however, that might be risky for the same talent will
have made similar lines and styles for your competitors as well.
To achieve the best original designs you have to be determined
for this and you have to dedicate budget for having the best.
You have to have enthusiasm and you have to have patience. I
would strongly recommend you to find the best people you can
ever find, delegate authority and support the team with the best
ways of motivation. Then you will be one step ahead of your
competitors or more…

CIFF
Shanghai
2018 hits
The great show of the furniture
industry sees +37% attendees
and an amazing range of
furnishing solutions
an all-time
high
Organised jointly by CFTE* (China Foreign Trade
Guangzhou Exhibition General Corporation) and Red
Star Macalline**, the event will be difficult to forget.
Indeed, the coalition of these two furniture sector giants,
both determined to provide exhibitors and visitors with the
best, made it possible to achieve new quality levels. Under
the theme of “an Example of Global Home Life”, the exhibition
gave international and Chinese operators new concepts
of living and working, and, particularly, new opportunities
for acquiring information and doing business.
146,419 professional operators from more than 200 countries
and regions (37% more than in the 2017 edition) were
provided with the opportunity to find out about the innovations
in the sector and do business at the booths of the
more than 1,300 companies attending the fair, spread out
over a surface area of 400,000 square metres, and through
a series of B2B meetings organised by CIFF, aimed at international
buyers and Chinese dealers.
So, for 4 days the NECC corridors were packed with sector
operators, who were able to draw fresh inspiration by visiting
wonderful design exhibitions and by attending forums
and conventions on the new trends in the Chinese and international
furniture market.
An edition with an international air, highlighting the extent
to which product design, furnishing solution customisation
and intelligent production methodologies are essential added
values if a business wants to be competitive; driving
factors, crucial for facilitating further development in the international
furniture trade sector, and for the growth of the
Chinese industry. CIFF Shanghai 2018 effectively helped
change the concept of “Made in China” into “Designed and
Created in China”, partly due to the contribution made by
over 90 high-level Chinese brands, attending CIFF Shanghai
for the first time. By increasing the range and the level of
the products on show, these brands therefore helped create
a new fair experience, both for those working in the sector
October 2018
43
and the media representatives who came to Shanghai from
all parts of China and from all over the world.
The quality and inventiveness of the products, the care devoted
to the presentations and the architectural design of
the stands themselves, as well as the contents of the organised
events, were the valuable ingredients of a successful
recipe that resulted in the attendance of an extremely high
number of designers, as well as dealers and buyers.
An improved functional and strategic subdivision between
the various sectors represented, Home Furniture,
Homedécor & Hometextile, Outdoor & Leisure, Office Show
and Furniture Machinery & Raw Materials, allowed visitors
to optimise their time at the fair, and fully enjoy the services
available in the surrounding district, which has unquestionable
enriched and enhanced.
On 13 September, at the
Hongqiao NECC, CIFF
Shanghai 2018 ended. What’s
the balance sheet like?
The best ever! A unique edition,
the one that has definitely left
a mark on the history of the
exhibition…
44
HTE
EVENTS
This was one of the many ways in which the organisers
indicated that they wished to constantly
improve all aspects of the CIFF experience.
A fair that is growing continuously, that hosted
a series of key events, seminars, competitions
and innovative initiatives, including East Design
Show, Design Dream Show, China Design
Forum, the Pinnacle Awards Asia Pacific,China
Interiors & Decoration Conference, Office Life
Theme Pavilion, Milan Shanghai Creative Twin
City and etc. All aimed at providing strategic and
thought-provoking information, and creativity to
be transformed into business opportunities.
One of the standout events was definitely the
4th edition of the EAST Design Show; the incredible
exhibition of Asian design, where the best
takes shape, astonishes and arouses passion.
The spirit of Asian craftsmanship, rediscovered
in all its power, of marvellously handmade objects,
details designed to make the difference
in a symphony of shapes and materials, is celebrated
by the selection of leading companies,
young designers and thematic workshops. The
theme of this edition was “More Different, More
Interesting”; a theme that is significant and
fascinating, one that is never investigated sufficiently,
and that is extremely topical in years of
globalisation.
October 2018
Without forgetting the China Design Forum, which by 45
means of the project entitled “Seek Innovation, Boost
Entrepreneurship and Jointly Create a Better Future”, made
a good contribution to educational developments in the
fields of design, art, culture, architecture and interior design.
CIFF Shanghai 2018 also witnessed the award ceremony
and the exhibition of the 2nd edition of the Pinnacle Awards
Asia-Pacific, promoted by CIFF, by the American Society
of Furniture Designers (ASFD) and by High Point Market.
During this event, it was reiterated how the products awarded
in the 16 different competing categories will be easily
accepted by and distributed in the international markets,
and particularly in the US market.
The 42nd CIFF Shanghai edition that has just ended was
the result of constant work conducted over the last twenty
years, and of a new collaboration agreement aimed at
generating a global business platform, at innovating and
improving the fair constantly, at showcasing innovations, at
improving the visitor experience.
CIFF has therefore once again proven itself to be an essential
event for those who wish to understand the Asian market;
a non-to-be-missed appointment, one that year after
year manages to surprise its visitors.
Design Dream Show, the event dedicated to the trends
in contemporary home furnishing, created by Red Star
Macalline and Innovation Design Alliance, was a resounding
success.
A medley of installations that interprets living styles, even
before furnishing. This led to the creation of rooms that
talked about ways of being, dreams and interpretations
of private spaces.

Entered in the blinds and folding curtains sector in 2009 Maden
Curtain Systems now offers curtains with mechanisms to the
customers in the four corners of Turkey.
Emphasizing on recycling and natural components in
the production, Maden Curtain Systems has been developing
the blinds that cater to the needs of customers with
technological developments. As it was each year this year
also the company exhibited its products at Home&Tex fair.
To introduce you to the environment friendly curtains of
Maden we have directed our questions to Taskin Yilmaz,
the owner of Maden Curtain Systems, who has meticulously
managed every stage of his production.
When was your company established? What are the
product options of Maden Curtain Systems?
As a result of 17 years of recognition and experience in the
sector, I decided to implement Mine Curtain Systems signed
By Taşkın in 2009. We produce fabric, polystyrene
and wood-like Venetian blinds. We have 2000-2500 square
meters production capacity. We respond to the needs of
our customers for variety of choices. Usually we are working
with decorators and architects.
What do you pay attention when choosing the
materials you use in your products?
The polystyrene material that we use in our products can
be wiped with water and resistant to 70 degrees of heat.
We produce from synthetic materials. Although the market
prefers aluminum, we use plastic. We love our forests and
we don’t cut trees. If you look at our products you cannot
distinguish whether they are made of wood. Our sensitive
points in production are respect for nature and recycling.
When we recycle our products at the factory, if we give
100% of the product, we take back 60%.
PROFILE
You mentioned your product variety. What do you
do in terms of design?
Depending on the foil, we usually bring solutions close to
the sector from abroad and ensure the sustainability in the
sector. We have 98 color choices in our structure; this is
approximately equal to the number of 5 other firms’ offerings.
We also do custom production.
Which countries do you export?
We export our products to India, Iraq, the Netherlands and
Kosovo. We are adding new countries to our existing market
network through our contacts in Home&Tex, Evteks
and various textile fairs. We aim to increase our strength
abroad. Our target is Azerbaijan and Russia markets.
What are the future plans of Maden Curtain
Systems?
Developments within our brand continue. While expanding
the sales in present markets and we enter into new markets,
we made a deal with Taç and Linens in the domestic
market. Customers can find our products in their stores. In
2019 we will launch blinds of 65s, sliding models and leather
blinds. We display our new products at Home&Tex. In
2019, our production in Ankara will be operational. There
are certain cities we have determined for manufacturing;
Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Kayseri.
Taskin Yilmaz
The owner of Maden Curtain Systems
What are the key points that differentiate Maden
Curtain Systems from other companies in the
sector?
Only a few companies offer wooden blinds in Turkey. Our
aim is to be the leader of the sector. But this is not only
the goal setting. We carry out studies to support this goal.
It is difficult for us to supply raw materials from abroad as
in any other sector. We have initiated the necessary work
solving this problem. We started to manufacture ribbon by
ourselves. We will also manufacture slide ribbon ropes. In
this sense, we stand out from the market. We removed the
forehead bar in the product. In addition to this, we have
about 18 color cases, 27 kinds of ribbon color and about
15 rope colors. We are good at the production of wooden
blinds from most of other companies. Our products have
a 5-year guarantee. We offer free exchange guarantee to
our customers. Our business does not end with R&D. We
are delighted with this discovery and we are delighted with
the feedbacks of our success.
Fringe program inspires with innovation and
insight
One important feature at the fair is the comprehensive
Trend Forum, which continued to receive good feedback
and attendance this year. “It’s easier to apply the trend
concept when designing products after visiting the trend
area and attending seminars given by different industry
experts,” said one visitor at the Future Talk feature, Ms
Hu Hongmei, Design Director, Jiangsu Ruiaifu Textile
Technology Co., Ltd. Interest also gathered around the
Digital Printing Micro Factory, which held two live demonstrations
throughout the fair, and a variety of seminars
and panel discussions. Not only did the fair create new
business partnerships and deals, but it also provided a
comfortable space to look forward to industry trends and
innovations.
Exhibitors’ testimonials
“I certainly believe that this fair is good for building our
brand in China. It’s a big country with a lot of potential,
a great economy. Demand is definitely rising – it’s a big
country that keeps growing. Contract business is a huge
market with huge potential, even in just the hotels.”
Jamil Urroz, Sales Representative, Boyteks,
Turkey
“We see this fair as an investment to raise our brand
awareness in Asia. This fair is a good gateway to the Asian
market – this is our only opportunity to meet potential
Chinese customers. We have a good location, we are in
the International Halls – these are the best halls for us.”
Thomas Luys, Sales Manager, Libeco, Belgium
“The visitor flow in international hall is high and we received
a number of onsite orders. Intertextile Shanghai
Home Textiles is renowned in the industry and we can see
the attending visitors are more professional with specific
sourcing target.”
field and continues to work with its more than 40 years
of experience. Gokhan Kececi, Chairman of the Board of
Depar Deri, has started his words by saying, “We owe our
success to the perfect service we provide to our customers
and our emphasis on quality.” We talked to Gokhan Kececi
about the developments in the brand structure.
Would you give us some information about your
products, production capacity and the sectors that
you serve to?
We have polyurethane PVC vinyl coating, coagula and flock
lines for production. We produce a wide range of products
to be used in the production of footwear, slippers, bags,
dresses, upholstery, auto accessories and agendas. We can
produce 500,000 meters of imitation leather, 200,000 meters
of flock products totaling 700,000 meters per month.
What are the sources of your raw material needs?
95 percent of our raw materials are imported from Europe
and far eastern countries; the rest 5 percent are sourced
from domestic market.
Do you have custom designed products?
Our team of designers composed of eight people has been
developing new patterns and varieties. Besides, we make
custom made designs for individuals or firms.
Would you please mention about your export
activities? What is the share of exports in your
sales?
40 percent of our products are exported, 60 % is offered
to domestic market. England, Spain, Germany, France,
Greece, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and Holland are our major
export markets. As a result of our activities in domestic and
international fairs our network of markets is expanding year
after year.
What would you like to say about your R&D
activities?
We are aware of the impact of the technology and quality
products on the power of companies. We empower our professional
team in our two R&D laboratories that we have
with the certificates we got where physical and chemical
specifications are tested. We have several certificates of ISO
Which fairs do you participate in the country and
in the world?
Home&Tex, Aysaf, and Boatshow are the domestic fairs that
we participate in. In foreign countries we participate in Paris
Text World, ITA in America, Index in Qatar, Paperworld in
Frankfurt, Interzum in Cologne, and in DubaiFair. We consider
to participate in Lineapelle in Italy in 2019.
“The industry keeps going in the future until the human
needs and oil reserves is out”
What is your opinion about the imitation leather
sector?
Imitation leather industry in the world is in recession while
textile products similar to leather gain share in the markets.
So, imitation leather industry lives its nirvana. Leather
industry depends on the raw material supply, that is petroleum.
The industry will keep its position as long as the oil
reserves are active.
How do you see the position of your company in
the sector you have been?
Established in 1980, we are the first company that has the
first polyurethane production line in Turkey. We also had
started several innovations in the sector. Though our volume
is not so high, we are one of the top companies in
terms of product quality. Our exports to Europe and the
brands that we have business prove our success. In order
to keep our position we emphasize on quality, customer
satisfaction and customer services.
