name of this small South American country. The spelling Surinam<br />

can now safely be regarded as historic <strong>and</strong> Suriname as the<br />

preferred modern spelling. The Suriname River <strong>and</strong> Suriname<br />

toad also take the modern spellings. Suriname was <strong>for</strong>merly<br />

Dutch Guiana.<br />
