VIII. <strong>The</strong> Modern <strong>Slavery</strong> Act<br />

of 2015 (UK)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Modern <strong>Slavery</strong> Act 2015 is an Act of the Parliament of the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom. It is<br />

designed to combat modern slavery <strong>in</strong> the UK and consolidates previous offences<br />

relat<strong>in</strong>g to traffick<strong>in</strong>g and slavery. <strong>The</strong> act extends to England and Wales. <strong>The</strong> bill was<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced to the House of Commons <strong>in</strong> draft form <strong>in</strong> October 2013 by James<br />

Brokenshire, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Crime and Security.<br />

<strong>The</strong> bill's sponsors <strong>in</strong> the Home Office were <strong>The</strong>resa May and Lord Bates. It received<br />

Royal Assent and became law on 26 March 2015.<br />

James Brokenshire was quoted as say<strong>in</strong>g that the act would "send the strongest<br />

possible message to crim<strong>in</strong>als that if you are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> this disgust<strong>in</strong>g trade <strong>in</strong> human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>gs, you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted and you will be locked up."<br />
