175,000 young women from Russia, as well as the former Soviet Union, were sold as<br />

commodities <strong>in</strong> the sex markets of the developed countries <strong>in</strong> Europe and the Americas.<br />

In 2013, the Supreme Court of Canada declared the laws which effectively prohibited<br />

prostitution illegal. It delayed the implementation of this rul<strong>in</strong>g for one year to give the<br />

parliament time to enact replacement laws, if it so desired.<br />

Commercial Demand for Sex<br />

Abolitionists who seek an end to sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g expla<strong>in</strong> the nature of sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

an economic supply and demand model. In this model, male demand for prostitutes<br />

leads to a market of sex work, which, <strong>in</strong> turn, fosters sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g, the illegal trade and<br />

coercion of people <strong>in</strong>to sex work, and pimps and traffickers become 'distributors' who<br />

supply people to be sexually exploited. <strong>The</strong> demand for sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g can also be<br />

facilitated by some pimps' and traffickers' desire for women whom they can exploit as<br />

workers because they do not require wages, safe work<strong>in</strong>g circumstances, and agency <strong>in</strong><br />

choos<strong>in</strong>g customers.<br />

Consequences<br />

Sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g victims face threats of violence from many sources, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g customers,<br />

pimps, brothel owners, madams, traffickers, and corrupt local law enforcement officials.<br />

Raids as an anti-sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g measure have the potential to help, and also to protect<br />

sex trafficked victims. Because of their potentially complicated legal status and their<br />

potential language barriers, the arrest or fear of arrest creates stress and other<br />

emotional trauma for traffick<strong>in</strong>g victims. Victims may also experience physical violence<br />

from law enforcement dur<strong>in</strong>g raids. <strong>The</strong> challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g victims often cont<strong>in</strong>ue of<br />
