bondage, and contract slavery. It then contrasts the economic features of these modern forms of<br />

British Empire. It refutes the widely accepted notion that religious and abolitionist movements<br />

were the driv<strong>in</strong>g factors that ended the trade. Instead, it po<strong>in</strong>ts to economic factors such as the<br />

costs <strong>in</strong>curred by the slave traders, as well as a decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the overall profitability of the British<br />

West Indies, as the ultimate causes. <strong>The</strong>se economic causes are seen as a part of the broader<br />

transition to capitalism that the British underwent dur<strong>in</strong>g this time period.<br />

characteristics of forced labor. It refers to a statistical report that del<strong>in</strong>eates how much forced<br />

labor there is <strong>in</strong> the world today. <strong>The</strong>se issues and statistics are exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> order to build<br />

support for a policy change, at both the global and national levels, <strong>in</strong> order to end forced labor.
