populations. Through a jo<strong>in</strong>t venture, ma<strong>in</strong>ly through Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong>vestors, villagers are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

forced to buy and cultivate hybrid rice seeds. Due to the costs of fertilizers, pesticides, and<br />

mechanized farm<strong>in</strong>g tools that these seeds require, farmers cannot afford to operate. Many are<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g themselves <strong>in</strong> debt, and thus are forced to sell their lands or risk its confiscation by<br />

government authorities.<br />
