and events.
Opposing Charles Hoskin: To those that responded to our call
for help sending in emails/letters opposing Judge Charles Hoskin being
appointed to the Nevada Court of Appeals, thank you so very, very much.
If he hoped that Vegas Voice seniors were not paying attention to the
news and to our columns, he was seriously mistaken.
Our goal was to have 500 opposition messages sent to the Committee
of Judicial Selection, and as of our Christmas deadline, have received
442. Judge Hoskin’s scheduled interview before the Commission is
January 14 th and we will be there.
The Guardians Documentary: For those that attended our
guardianship seminars over the last two years, you saw filmmaker Billie
Mintz and his camera crew following us. “The Guardians” features
many of the victims we have written about during our investigation.
It has been showing at film festivals all around the United States
and Canada, coming away with glowing accolades and awards. His
excellent documentary will soon be available to all. You better believe
that as soon as we get a copy, we will be scheduling events around town.
Legislative Efforts: February will start the new legislative session
and we will begin lobbying for the Supported Decision-Making (SDM)
bill. SDM is a wonderful alternative to guardianship.
The key is that seniors would choose a person as their “supported
decision maker” while they are
mentally competent. Under this
process, seniors will remain in
their home, maintain control of
everything that belongs to them -
everything that a guardian would
control.
The next bill we will be
supporting (thanks to all of you
that responded to our survey) is
Death with Dignity. When our
Looking Ahead By: Carol Chapman
As we look ahead to 2019, we do so with great anticipation. It is
an exciting time to live in Southern Nevada, and we believe our
mission to help seniors in the Las Vegas Valley is more vital than ever
before.
With that in mind, we are excited to announce a new fundraising
event. The Foundation Assisting Seniors in association with The
Independent Senior Foundation present the 2019 Inaugural Gala to
be held on Saturday, March 16 at 6 p.m. at the M Resort Spa Casino in
Henderson.
Performer Mark OToole is the event entertainment; dinner and show
will culminate with the presentation of the Nevada Centenarians. Live
and silent auctions promise to make this event even more incredibly
Starting the New Year
Judge Charles Hoskin
survey concluded, we had received a 95% positive response.
While some people have questioned whether family members with
an ulterior motive may request such terminal action, the answer is NO.
The Death with Dignity bill clearly provides:
1. Only the patient can request the medication from their physician.
2. The patient has six months or less to live due to their medical
diagnosis.
3. Two doctors must sign off on it before medication is given.
We will be bringing you all updates as we get closer to the legislative
hearing dates.
community, please consider joining us at the Gala as a sponsor,
program advertiser, auction donor or by buying a table. All event
which is to assist seniors in times of illness, recovery, confinement at
home, coping with loss of a loved one and many other challenges.
Since its inception, The Foundation’s volunteers have responded to
more than 100,000 requests for assistance services in the Las Vegas
