were truly penitent would pray earnestly for divine aid to battle against <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

evil propensities, and he also urged upon <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> sincerity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir prayers would be evinced by <strong>the</strong> energy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir endeavors to render<br />

obedience to <strong>the</strong> law <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

Precious indeed was <strong>the</strong> message which Lu<strong>the</strong>r bore to <strong>the</strong> eager crowds<br />

that hung upon his words. Never before had such teachings fallen upon <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ears. The glad tidings <strong>of</strong> a Saviour's love, <strong>the</strong> assurance <strong>of</strong> pardon and peace<br />

through his atoning blood, melted <strong>the</strong>ir hearts, and inspired within <strong>the</strong>m an<br />

immortal hope. A light was kindled at Wittenberg whose rays should extend<br />

to <strong>the</strong> uttermost parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth, and which was to increase in brightness to<br />

<strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> time.<br />
