successful in alienating two hundred and fifty princes, famous in <strong>the</strong><br />

congregation, men <strong>of</strong> renown. With <strong>the</strong>se strong and influential men in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

cause, <strong>the</strong>y felt sure <strong>of</strong> making a radical change in <strong>the</strong> order <strong>of</strong> things. They<br />

thought <strong>the</strong>y could transform <strong>the</strong> government <strong>of</strong> Israel, and greatly improve<br />

<strong>the</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> Moses and Aaron.<br />

God had honored <strong>the</strong> Levites to do service in <strong>the</strong> tabernacle, because<br />

<strong>the</strong>y took no part in making and worshiping <strong>the</strong> golden calf, and because <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir faithfulness in executing <strong>the</strong> divine judgment upon <strong>the</strong> idolaters. To <strong>the</strong><br />

Levites was assigned <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> erecting <strong>the</strong> tabernacle, and encamping<br />

around it, while <strong>the</strong> hosts <strong>of</strong> Israel pitched <strong>the</strong>ir tents at a distance from <strong>the</strong><br />

sacred building. And when <strong>the</strong>y journeyed, <strong>the</strong> Levites took down <strong>the</strong><br />

There is nothing which will please <strong>the</strong> people better than to be praised<br />

harsh, too exacting, and dictatorial, and that he reproved <strong>the</strong> people as<br />

though <strong>the</strong>y were sinners, when <strong>the</strong>y were a holy people, and <strong>the</strong> Lord was<br />

among <strong>the</strong>m. Korah rehearsed <strong>the</strong> incidents in <strong>the</strong>ir experience in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

travels through <strong>the</strong> wilderness, where <strong>the</strong>y had been brought into strait<br />

places, and where many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m had died because <strong>of</strong> murmuring and<br />

disobedience, and with <strong>the</strong>ir perverted senses <strong>the</strong>y thought <strong>the</strong>y saw very<br />
