Incidents on <strong>the</strong> Voyage to <strong>the</strong> North Pacific<br />

We left San Francisco June 10, in <strong>the</strong> steamer Oregon for Portland. I had<br />

been overworked, and was much worn, and flattered myself that I should rest<br />

on board <strong>the</strong> steamer. But <strong>the</strong> wind blew very strong directly against us, I<br />

remained on deck after nearly all had abandoned it because <strong>of</strong> sea-sickness, I<br />

enjoyed <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> billows running mountain high, blue and green, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> dashing spray reflecting all <strong>the</strong> colors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rainbow. I could not become<br />

weary <strong>of</strong> looking upon that grand scene; and I reflected how easily all on<br />

board might be engulfed in <strong>the</strong> angry waters.<br />

As I looked upon <strong>the</strong> white-capped, roaring billows, I was reminded <strong>of</strong><br />

that scene in <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> Christ, when <strong>the</strong> disciples, in obedience to <strong>the</strong><br />

command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Master, went in <strong>the</strong>ir boats to <strong>the</strong> far<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea. A<br />

terrible tempest broke upon <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>ir vessels would not obey <strong>the</strong>ir will, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were driven hi<strong>the</strong>r and thi<strong>the</strong>r until <strong>the</strong>y laid down <strong>the</strong>ir oars in despair.<br />

They expected to perish <strong>the</strong>re; but, while <strong>the</strong> tempest and <strong>the</strong> billows talked<br />

with death, Christ, whom <strong>the</strong>y had left upon <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side, appeared to <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

walking calmly upon <strong>the</strong> boisterous, white-capped waves. They had been<br />

bewildered by <strong>the</strong> uselessness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir efforts, and <strong>the</strong> apparent hopelessness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir case, and had given all up for lost. When <strong>the</strong>y saw Jesus before <strong>the</strong>m<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> water it increased <strong>the</strong>ir terror, <strong>the</strong>y interpreted it as a sure precursor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir immediate death. They cried out in great fear. But, instead <strong>of</strong> his<br />

appearance heralding <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> death, he came as <strong>the</strong> messenger <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

His voice was heard above <strong>the</strong> roar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elements: "It is I; be not afraid."<br />

How quickly <strong>the</strong> scene now changed from <strong>the</strong> horror <strong>of</strong> despair to <strong>the</strong> joy <strong>of</strong><br />

faith and hope in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beloved Master! The disciples felt no<br />

more anxiety nor dread <strong>of</strong> death, for Christ was with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
