The Jerusalem Sinner Saved; or Good News for the Vilest of Men by John Bunyan 1689

An encouraging book for those who feel guilty about their sins. It is a wonderful reminder that Christ's grace to his people knows no bounds and that his power to save even the worst sinner is not limited. "I have been vile myself, but I have obtained mercy; and I would have my companions in sin partake of mercy too: and therefore, I have writ this little book." Thus wrote John Bunyan about this unique gem. The premise of this book is that Jesus wanted his disciples to proclaim the gospel to the worst of sinners - those in Jerusalem who crucified their Messiah. To Bunyan's mind, this was the worst possible sin. The apostles were to begin there, with these worst of sinners, because, in Christ's eyes, they had the greatest need. Also, when they believed in Christ, his name would receive the greatest fame, and thus others would be encouraged to come to Christ. The kingdom of Satan would then be weakened, and the tempted and the weak would be helped. Further, the greatest sinners would love Christ the most when saved, and those who refused to repent would be left with no excuse. To Bunyan's way of thinking, this command to preach the gospel to "Jerusalem sinners" shows the gracious intentions of Christ toward men and his sufficiency to save the worst of sinners, and gives encouragement to those who think that their sin is too great to be forgiven.

was <strong>the</strong> blood <strong>of</strong> a dog, an ass, <strong>or</strong> a swine, which always was, as to<br />

sacrifices, rejected <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> God <strong>of</strong> heaven, as unholy <strong>or</strong> unclean.<br />

Now he who has no better esteem <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ, and <strong>of</strong> his death and<br />

blood, will not be persuaded to come to him f<strong>or</strong> life, <strong>or</strong> to trust in him<br />

f<strong>or</strong> salvation.<br />

3. But fur<strong>the</strong>r, all this must be done against manifest tokens to prove<br />

<strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>or</strong> after <strong>the</strong> shining <strong>of</strong> gospel light upon <strong>the</strong> soul, <strong>or</strong> some<br />

considerable pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> him as <strong>the</strong> Messiah, <strong>or</strong> that he was <strong>the</strong><br />

Savi<strong>or</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld.<br />

1. It must be done against manifest tokens to prove <strong>the</strong> contrary; and<br />

thus <strong>the</strong> reprobate Jews committed it when <strong>the</strong>y saw <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ks <strong>of</strong> God,<br />

which put f<strong>or</strong>th <strong>the</strong>mselves in him, and called <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

devil and Beelzebub.<br />

2. It must be done against some shining light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gospel upon <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

And thus it was with Judas, and with those who, after <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

enlightened, and had tasted, and had felt something <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> powers <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld to come, fell away from <strong>the</strong> faith <strong>of</strong> him, and put him to open<br />

shame and disgrace; Heb. vi. 5, 6.<br />

3. It must also be done after, and in opposition to one’s own open<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> him. “F<strong>or</strong> if after <strong>the</strong>y have escaped <strong>the</strong> pollution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>or</strong>ld, through <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> our L<strong>or</strong>d and Savi<strong>or</strong> Jesus Christ, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are again entangled <strong>the</strong>rein, and overcome, <strong>the</strong> latter end is w<strong>or</strong>se with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m than <strong>the</strong> beginning; f<strong>or</strong> it had been better f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>m not to have<br />

known <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> righteousness, than after <strong>the</strong>y have known it, to turn<br />

from <strong>the</strong> holy commandment (which is <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>d <strong>of</strong> faith) delivered<br />

unto <strong>the</strong>m.”<br />

4. All this must be done openly, bef<strong>or</strong>e witnesses, in <strong>the</strong> face, sight, and<br />

view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld, <strong>by</strong> w<strong>or</strong>d and act. This is <strong>the</strong> sin that is unpardonable;<br />
