The Jerusalem Sinner Saved; or Good News for the Vilest of Men by John Bunyan 1689

An encouraging book for those who feel guilty about their sins. It is a wonderful reminder that Christ's grace to his people knows no bounds and that his power to save even the worst sinner is not limited. "I have been vile myself, but I have obtained mercy; and I would have my companions in sin partake of mercy too: and therefore, I have writ this little book." Thus wrote John Bunyan about this unique gem. The premise of this book is that Jesus wanted his disciples to proclaim the gospel to the worst of sinners - those in Jerusalem who crucified their Messiah. To Bunyan's mind, this was the worst possible sin. The apostles were to begin there, with these worst of sinners, because, in Christ's eyes, they had the greatest need. Also, when they believed in Christ, his name would receive the greatest fame, and thus others would be encouraged to come to Christ. The kingdom of Satan would then be weakened, and the tempted and the weak would be helped. Further, the greatest sinners would love Christ the most when saved, and those who refused to repent would be left with no excuse. To Bunyan's way of thinking, this command to preach the gospel to "Jerusalem sinners" shows the gracious intentions of Christ toward men and his sufficiency to save the worst of sinners, and gives encouragement to those who think that their sin is too great to be forgiven.

Item, I saved Lot from <strong>the</strong> guilt and damnation that he had procured to<br />

himself <strong>by</strong> his incest.<br />

Item, I saved David from <strong>the</strong> vengeance that belonged to him f<strong>or</strong><br />

committing <strong>of</strong> adultery and murder.<br />

Here is also Solomon, Manasseh, Peter, Magdalen, and many o<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

made mention <strong>of</strong> in this book. Yea, here are <strong>the</strong>ir names, <strong>the</strong>ir sins, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir salvations rec<strong>or</strong>ded toge<strong>the</strong>r, that you may read and know what a<br />

Savi<strong>or</strong> he is, and do him hon<strong>or</strong> in <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld. F<strong>or</strong> why are <strong>the</strong>se things<br />

thus rec<strong>or</strong>ded, but to show to sinners what he can do, to <strong>the</strong> praise and<br />

gl<strong>or</strong>y <strong>of</strong> his grace?<br />

And it is observable, as I said bef<strong>or</strong>e, we have but very little <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

salvation <strong>of</strong> little sinners mentioned in God’s book, because that would<br />

not have answered <strong>the</strong> design, to wit, to bring gl<strong>or</strong>y and fame to <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Son <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

What should be <strong>the</strong> reason, think you, why Christ should so easily take<br />

a denial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great ones, that were <strong>the</strong> grandeur <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld, and<br />

struggle so hard f<strong>or</strong> hedge-creepers and highwaymen (as that parable,<br />

Luke xiv., seems to imp<strong>or</strong>t he doth), but to show f<strong>or</strong>th <strong>the</strong> riches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gl<strong>or</strong>y <strong>of</strong> his grace to his praise? This I say, is one reason to be sure.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y that had <strong>the</strong>ir grounds, <strong>the</strong>ir yoke <strong>of</strong> oxen, and <strong>the</strong>ir marriage<br />

joys, were invited to come; but <strong>the</strong>y made <strong>the</strong>ir excuse, and that served<br />

<strong>the</strong> turn. But when he comes to deal with <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>st, he saith to his<br />

servants, Go ye out and bring <strong>the</strong>m in hi<strong>the</strong>r. “Go out quickly, and bring<br />

in hi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> po<strong>or</strong>, <strong>the</strong> maimed, <strong>the</strong> halt, and <strong>the</strong> blind.” And <strong>the</strong>y did<br />

so: and he said again, “Go out into <strong>the</strong> highways and hedges, and<br />

compel <strong>the</strong>m to come in, that my house may be filled;” Luke xiv. 18, 19,<br />

23. <strong>The</strong>se po<strong>or</strong>, lame, maimed, blind, hedge-creepers and highwaymen,<br />
