It is a wonderful reminder that Christ's grace to his people knows no bounds and that his power to save even the worst sinner is not limited. "I have been vile myself, but I have obtained mercy; and I would have my companions in sin partake of mercy too: and therefore, I have writ this little book." Thus wrote John Bunyan about this unique gem. The premise of this book is that Jesus wanted his disciples to proclaim the gospel to the worst of sinners - those in Jerusalem who crucified their Messiah. To Bunyan's mind, this was the worst possible sin. The apostles were to begin there, with these worst of sinners, because, in Christ's eyes, they had the greatest need. Also, when they believed in Christ, his name would receive the greatest fame, and thus others would be encouraged to come to Christ. The kingdom of Satan would then be weakened, and the tempted and the weak would be helped. Further, the greatest sinners would love Christ the most when saved, and those who refused to repent would be left with no excuse. To Bunyan's way of thinking, this command to preach the gospel to "Jerusalem sinners" shows the gracious intentions of Christ toward men and his sufficiency to save the worst of sinners, and gives encouragement to those who think that their sin is too great to be forgiven.

biggest sinners. “Begin,” saith he, “at <strong>Jerusalem</strong>.” And thus I end <strong>the</strong><br />

third reason.<br />

Fourthly, Jesus Christ would have mercy <strong>of</strong>fered in <strong>the</strong> first place to <strong>the</strong><br />

biggest sinners, because that is <strong>the</strong> way, if <strong>the</strong>y receive it, most to<br />

weaken <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> Satan, and to keep it lowest in every age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>or</strong>ld. <strong>The</strong> biggest sinners, <strong>the</strong>y are Satan’s colonels and captains, <strong>the</strong><br />

leaders <strong>of</strong> his people, and <strong>the</strong>y that most stoutly make head against <strong>the</strong><br />

Son <strong>of</strong> God. Wheref<strong>or</strong>e let <strong>the</strong>se first be conquered, and his kingdom<br />

will be weak. When Ishbosheth had lost his Abner, his kingdom was<br />

made weak: n<strong>or</strong> did he sit but tottering <strong>the</strong>n upon his throne. So when<br />

Satan loseth his strong men, <strong>the</strong>m that are mighty to w<strong>or</strong>k iniquity, and<br />

dexterous to manage o<strong>the</strong>rs in <strong>the</strong> same, <strong>the</strong>n is his kingdom weak; 2<br />

Sam. iii. <strong>The</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e, I say, Christ doth <strong>of</strong>fer mercy in <strong>the</strong> first place to<br />

such, <strong>the</strong> m<strong>or</strong>e to weaken his kingdom. Christ Jesus was glad to see<br />

Satan fall like lightning from heaven, that is, suddenly <strong>or</strong> head long;<br />

and it was, surely, <strong>by</strong> casting <strong>of</strong> him out <strong>of</strong> strong possessions, and <strong>by</strong><br />

recovering <strong>of</strong> some not<strong>or</strong>ious sinners out <strong>of</strong> his clutches; Luke x. 17–19.<br />

Samson, when he would pull down <strong>the</strong> Philistines temple, took hold <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> two main pillars <strong>of</strong> it, and breaking <strong>the</strong>m, down came <strong>the</strong> house.<br />

Christ came to destroy <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> devil, and to destroy <strong>by</strong><br />

converting grace, as well as <strong>by</strong> redeeming blood. Now sin swarms, and<br />

lieth <strong>by</strong> legions, and whole armies, in <strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biggest sinners, as<br />

in garrisons: wheref<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong> way, <strong>the</strong> most direct way to destroy it, is<br />

first to deal with such sinners <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>d <strong>of</strong> his gospel, and <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

merits <strong>of</strong> his passion.<br />

F<strong>or</strong> example, though I shall give you but a homely one: suppose a family<br />

to be troubled with vermin, and one <strong>or</strong> two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family to be in chief<br />

<strong>the</strong> breeders, <strong>the</strong> way, <strong>the</strong> quickest way to clear that family, <strong>or</strong> at least to<br />
