The Jerusalem Sinner Saved; or Good News for the Vilest of Men by John Bunyan 1689

An encouraging book for those who feel guilty about their sins. It is a wonderful reminder that Christ's grace to his people knows no bounds and that his power to save even the worst sinner is not limited. "I have been vile myself, but I have obtained mercy; and I would have my companions in sin partake of mercy too: and therefore, I have writ this little book." Thus wrote John Bunyan about this unique gem. The premise of this book is that Jesus wanted his disciples to proclaim the gospel to the worst of sinners - those in Jerusalem who crucified their Messiah. To Bunyan's mind, this was the worst possible sin. The apostles were to begin there, with these worst of sinners, because, in Christ's eyes, they had the greatest need. Also, when they believed in Christ, his name would receive the greatest fame, and thus others would be encouraged to come to Christ. The kingdom of Satan would then be weakened, and the tempted and the weak would be helped. Further, the greatest sinners would love Christ the most when saved, and those who refused to repent would be left with no excuse. To Bunyan's way of thinking, this command to preach the gospel to "Jerusalem sinners" shows the gracious intentions of Christ toward men and his sufficiency to save the worst of sinners, and gives encouragement to those who think that their sin is too great to be forgiven.

But this grace is hid from <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> men; <strong>the</strong> devil hides it from <strong>the</strong>m;<br />

f<strong>or</strong> he knows it is alluring, he knows it has an attracting virtue in it: f<strong>or</strong><br />

this is it that above all arguments can draw <strong>the</strong> soul to God.<br />

I cannot help it, but must let drop ano<strong>the</strong>r w<strong>or</strong>d. <strong>The</strong> first church, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Jerusalem</strong> church, from whence <strong>the</strong> gospel was to be sent into all <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>or</strong>ld, was a church made up <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jerusalem</strong> sinners. <strong>The</strong>se great sinners<br />

were here <strong>the</strong> most shining monuments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exceeding grace <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

Thus you see I have proved <strong>the</strong> doctrine; and that not only <strong>by</strong> showing<br />

you that this was <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> L<strong>or</strong>d Jesus Christ in his lifetime,<br />

but his last will when he went up to God; saying, Begin to preach at<br />

<strong>Jerusalem</strong>.<br />

Yea, it is yet fur<strong>the</strong>r manifested, in that when his ministers first began<br />

to preach <strong>the</strong>re, he joined his power to <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>d, to <strong>the</strong> converting <strong>of</strong><br />

thousands <strong>of</strong> his betrayers and murderers, and also many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ringleading<br />

priests to <strong>the</strong> faith.<br />

I shall now proceed, and shall show you,<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> reasons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> point:<br />

2. And <strong>the</strong>n make some application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole.<br />

<strong>The</strong> observation, you know, is this: Jesus Christ would have mercy<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered, in <strong>the</strong> first place, to <strong>the</strong> biggest sinners, to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Jerusalem</strong><br />

sinners: “Preach repentance, and remission <strong>of</strong> sins, in my name, among<br />

all nations, beginning at <strong>Jerusalem</strong>.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> reasons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> point are:<br />

First, Because <strong>the</strong> biggest sinners have most need <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>. He that has<br />

most need, reason says, should be helped first. I mean, when a helping<br />

hand is <strong>of</strong>fered, and now it is: f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> gospel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> God is sent<br />

to help <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld; Acts xvi. 9. But <strong>the</strong> biggest sinner has most need.<br />
