Yrd. Doç. Dr. Hasan AKDAĞ’a, Uşak Halı-Kilim Evi yetkili personeli Safa KABAY’a, Sayın Nihan CENGİZ ve
Zerrin Işık’a bu keyifli araştırmada bana yaptıkları yardımlardan dolayı müteşekkirim…
Turkish carpets will be in the limelight everywhere from
America to China
Our journey begins with America, a new, virgin and hesitant market for almost every sector for years. We
will be at Domotex USA Fair in Atlanta to be organized for the first time this year. Putting those who have
hesitation and think “Should we go or not?” aside, the size of the American market attracts everyone. I
can’t wait to write in my next article what this fair will bring us in. Right after 1 month, we will be in Shanghai
for Domotex Asia/chinafloor, which will take place from 26 to 28 March. A lot of companies from Turkey will
participate in this fair again as every year, to offer Turkish carpets to China, which is the largest third country
in the world in respect to surface area. We hope that both fairs bring good results to our participants.
Turkey is the second leg of the carpet map
As you know, in 2019 we began to work to create the carpet map of Turkey. After the special news about
Sivas carpets that we published in January, I received very positive feedbacks. Those feedbacks proved
that we are a publication followed by people who care about carpets. As before, we will continue to
assume responsibility to introduce handmade Turkish rugs to all over the world. In this issue, we talk over
the Uşak Carpet, which had its name written in gold letters. We went to Uşak and came together with the
last representatives of the historical Uşak carpet. I would like to call you for reading this delightful article
without giving you any more spoilers about it. Finally, I would like to thank to İstanbul Carpet Museum
officials, to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan AKDAĞ, who is Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Uşak University,
to Mr. Safa KABAY, who is an authorized personnel at Uşak Carpet-Kilim House and to Ms. Nihan CENGİZ
and Ms. Zerrin Işık who help me and provide full support to me for this important article and this delighted
study.
olmaya devam edecek.
Her şehir kendi tasarımına sahiptir. Ben geleneksel
March - April 2019• 11 DECOR
tasarımlara yenilik katarak kullanılacağından, çağdaş İran
halıları dokumacısı bulmanın imalatla ilgili önemli bir
sorun olduğunu düşünüyorum.
Bu yüzden İsfahan’a gittiğimizde bir dokumacıya, “lütfen
bir tasarım yapabilir misiniz?” dedik. Bir de numune
verdik, örnek mavi ve kırmızıydı. Dört hafta sonra yine
İsfahan’a gittik.
oluyor. Çünkü İran halı kalitesi çok iyi seviyede. Bu çok
önemli. Çünkü İranlılar tasarladıkları ürünle çok gurur
duyarlar. Bu geleneklerden kopmak, karşılaştığım en
büyük zorluk aslında.
Hossein Rezvani: “I strive to re-create classics with
a contemporary touch, while staying true to the
heritage and legacy of the traditional Persian
carpet.”
Deeply influenced by the elegance of the Persian rug
culture, Hossein Rezvani grew up to appreciate its
intrinsic role in Iranian art and culture. Woven into the
fabric of Iranian history, religion, society and culture, the
Persian rug is as much part of Iran’s philosophy as it is of
its culture.
Persian carpets have always been and remain profoundly
entrenched in Iranian culture and the daily lives of its
people. For generations, the Rezvani‘s have produced
and distributed masterpieces from their home country.
Hossein, who is the third generation of a family to be
involved in this profession, is dedicated and passionate
about the rug industry and he gives the traditional
Persian rug a contemporary twist. Each single rug
designed by Hossein has the desire to bring forth
something new that holds an emotionally touching and
enduring value.
During manufacture, a significant value is placed on
reinterpreting classic craftsmanship and combining this
with design that is contemporary and simultaneously
elegant. Another main aspect is to avoid mass production
and rather to produce a bespoke rug that may be
inherited by future generations of families. Thus, creating
a modern classic for the 21st century.
We did an interview with Hossein Rezvani, Designer
of OHG during the world’s biggest flooring exhibition,
Domotex 2019, 11–14 January 2019 in Hannover, Germany.
Could you firstly inform about yourself and your
company?
My name is Hossein Rezvani. I am designer of Hossein
Rezvani Design OHG, I also produce my carpets myself
which I do in Isfahan. We have about five hundred weavers
who work for us there.
We do carpets contemporary persian carpets with the
quality of four hundred thousand knotted per square meter
up to one million per square meter, so we have one quality
14 DECOR • March - April 2019
at two by three meters six square meter is six million
knots made by hands, hand knotted carpets exactly.
We are the only brand to offer contemporary carpets Made
in Isfahan, Iran, with up to 1.000.000 knots per square
meter and we are very proud to bring this cultural heritage
back into today‘s contemporary living spaces.
The one million knots quality takes up to six months,
because you know it’s very fine. And we have five hundred
weavers but we only have thirty weavers who are able
to make the one million knots quality, so these are real
craftsmen. These are the real masters of hand-made
carpets.
The idea when I design is a traditional Persian carpet, so
I love traditional carpet myself. What I try to do is to give
the traditional design contemporaneous twist. This is my
main idea when I designed carpets because if you have a
Guest Designer
product with so much history and heritage it’s important
also when you have a new thing it needs to be seen
where it comes from so the heritage also in contemporary
carpets for me is very important.
What does mean “carpet” for Hossein Rezvani?
Because I’m an Iranian, like a Turkish of course also we all
have a very strong bond to carpets is it the Turkish carpet
the Persian we all have grown.
Old carpets are in your house in my house, for our parents
and grandparents carpets always have been around so its
more less in our blood today carpets to me means a home,
it means good memory, childhood memory all these things
come to my mind when I think about carpets.
What so special about your carpets?
I put a modern spin on traditional Persian patterns – and
prioritize outstanding quality. Our carpets start at 400,000
knots per square meter. They are the finest in the world, as
we have models with one million knots per square meter.
Of later we’ve been working with undyed sheep’s wool,
knotted direct off the sheep as it were. The carpet is called
‘Sahar’, belonging to ‘Sahara’. Just imagine the wind were
blowing on the fringe of the desert and exposes stony
sections – such as on this carpet here.
What is the trends for two thousand nineteen in the
world in your collection?
I am actually not a big fan of trends I don’t believe
in trends but I believe in timeless pieces, I believe in
timeless design because again for carpets you going to
put on the ground, you’re
going to hopefully live
with them you don’t
want to throw away at
ten thousand euro after
years so I think it’s more
about creating something
which is timeless of
course I love turquoise
color, gray colors, I always
have of course a little
bit of modern colors in
my collection this year,
we have a lot of gray,
turquois, greenish color
is that is very trendy
at the moment but my
main goal is to create
something which is
timeless.
We only have a hundred
percent hand knotted a
carpet only made in Iran.
What about export?
We actually export everywhere worldwide beside USA.
We export our carpets to many countries from Canada to
Australia, Japan, China and Middle East. We used to do
export to Turkey a lot but import tax now is very high. We
used to do a lot of business with Recep Sefer who has 7
shops, it has floor full of carpet in Grand Pazar, Istanbul.
Do you have any history for example in manufacturing?
A lot of people ask me why has nobody done Persian
contemporary carpet before me so I said well, I tell you
story for example when I started I thought it’s easy but
the problem with the Iranian weaver’s was because they’re
used to traditional designs like nain, moon, taboo. Every
city has its own design.
So when we went to Isfahan, we said to weaver please can
you we have a design, can you make it. We gave a sample
and the sample was blue and red. After four weeks we
went to Isfahan again suddenly. The sample was green
and yellow and then the weaver said to me but this looks
much better you have no idea, so this was the mentality of
the Iranian weaver the Iranian weaver said I know better
than you. This was one of the biggest challenges we had
to find the weaver who listen to us. Iranian carpet quality
wise is you will never find anything better. This was a
major because Iranian they’re very proud, they’re proud
of what they do with their product they design. It is to
break with these traditions was actually with the biggest
challenge I was facing. Thank you very much thank you for
passing by.
Yeni nelin
kilimi “Kilimista”
etmektedir. Her geçen gün büyümemiz ve gelişmemiz artarak
devam ediyor.
bahseder misiniz?
Ürünlerimizin farklılığı her kaliteye özenle yaklaşmamızla
birlikte “Kilim“ algısını bambaşka bir noktaya taşımış
oldu.
Başta zorluk gibi görünen şeyler şu an
Kilimista, reflecting the roots of the past with the modern touches of the future, gave Kilim a different
identity. Meet the new rugs in hand-woven look with its double-sided use, quality and digital printing
technique!
The culture of kilim inherits us from the past. Rugs, which
we used in our houses for centuries, has been adapted
to the present day by winning new form with Kilimista.
Without breaking away from our culture, the new generation
rugs emerged as a result of the long R & D studies that
were anticipated by the needs of the new age and became
more functional and more modern identity without breaking
away from the culture. Adapting the digital printing
techniques offered by the digital world to kilim, Kilimista
also brought a breath of fresh air to the market with its
two-sided designs as well. We have listened the “Kilimista”
from its Company Partners Mehmet Hasırcı, M.Serhan Cınıvız
and Halil Karapınar about the excitement of the innovations
they bring to the sector, and the Kilimista itself.
How did the Kilimista brand come out?
Although we have been in this sector for many years, we
have seen that people are gradually coming out of the
stereotyped carpet culture and we started to create The
Kilimista brand by foreseeing that different products could
exist in the market. As a result of long R & D activities (1- 1
- 5 years), products with the quality level we wanted, began
to be come out.
Could you tell us about the vision you have attributed to
the rugs with Kilimista brand?
The difference of our products has brought the perception
of Kilim to a different point with the careful approach to
every quality. We carried our name, designs and colours to
every city of Turkey from the very far east of our country to
the very far west of it as well. At the same time, we send
our products to many countries of the world with the same
excitement. We have added an entirely new dimension to
the rug with an unceasing excitement and an innovative
policy that always seeks new.
What are the advantages of producing machine carpet
and kilim at the same time?
Although the sectors are very close to each other, we
encountered many difficulties at first. These difficulties
gradually started to be overcome as the products have
become known and their awareness were increased
accordingly. Things that seemed to be a challenge at
the moment turned out to be an advantage, leading to
the emergence of new products. This affected our sales
positively.
Could you tell us about your recent collections and their
markets?
Our collections have always been catching the day and even
updated within the needs of the future accordingly. As a
result of the large R & D works we are currently producing
rugs that can be used with its both sides, the products
that look like one-sided real hand rugs and in addition we
produce rugs made with the printing technique that we
think it will certainly dominate most of the market in the
future.
The most of our collections is being made by considering
the American market. At present, we are now making most
of our exports to America.
Finally, is there anything you would like to add?
We continue to work not only for ourselves but also for our
country and our future as well. We always continue to work
with the ideas of How can we do better? What can we do
differently? How do we provide more employment?
Have you been able to achieve the desired returns and
growth since the creation of this brand?
This journey, which started with Serhan Cınıvız in 1998, has
been moved to today with its growth targets. This journey
had attracted the attention of Mr Mehmet Hasırcı who is
also from the sector and Mr Ibrahim Halil Karapınar who is
from outside of the sector, continued in a more powerful
way with their valuable contributions. Our improvements
and developments continue to grow each day.
kaydeder.
Uşak yöresinde dokunan halı ve kilimler, 13. ve 15.
yüzyıllar arasında Anadolu’yu karış karış dolaşarak
ticaret yapan Venedik’li tüccarlar keşfeder. Bu
halıları İzmir’den gemilerle Balkanlar’a oradan da
katır kervanlarıyla Avrupa’nın en uzak köşelerine
kadar satmaya başlar. Bereketli topraklardan çıkan
hammaddenin sanatla birleşmesi sonucu dokunan Uşak
halılarının klasik dönemi 16.yy ilk yarısından başlayıp
17.yy boyunca sürer. Yavuz Sultan Selim’in Safeviler ve
Memlüklerin üstüne yaptığı başarılı seferlerle Kahire
ve Tebriz gibi sanat merkezlerindeki ünlü sanatçıları,
mahir nakkaşları İstanbul’a getirir.
her duygu motiflerle aktarılmış. Atkısının ve çözgüsünün
yün olması halının kalitesi ve uzun ömürlülüğünü
işaret ediyor. Kökboyası ve sade renklere yer verilen
Öne çıkan modellerin detayları ise hayranlık uyandırıyor.
Madalyon Uşak halısı
Madalyonlu Uşak halıları daha önemli bir grup
olarak 16.yy içerisinde gelmiş, 10 metreye kadar
uzun olanları dokunmuştur. Orta eksende yuvarlak,
yanlarda sivri dilimli madalyonların sıralanması ile
sonsuzluğu yansıtır. Bu halıların desenlerinin çizimi
nakkaşlara, minyatür ve tezhip saray ressamlarına
görev olarak verilmiştir. Ancak onlar da İran halılarından
etkilenmiştir. Orta eksendeki madalyon yaratıcılık ve
sonsuzluğu anlatır.
Kuşlu Uşak Halısı
Uşak halılarının beyaz zeminlerine örnektir. Zeminde
birbirine bakan yaprak motifi vardır. Yaprak motifleri
Orta Asya
kabile reisleri bu hayvanların postlarını üstlerine alırlar;
Legendary Uşak Carpet which was adorned the famous artists’ paintings, also adorned the palaces of
the kings, knights’ and many important names’ mansions as well. We continue to tell the history of Turkish
carpet with the Legendary Uşak Carpets
Uşak, the city of ancient civilizations, has reflected the
civilizations who had lived on its territory in the most
beautiful way to its carpets. At the same time, the first
international road of history on the King’s Road, this
ancient cradle of ancient civilizations, the world is known
as a city in the history of cities with carpets. Uşak carpets,
whose historical specimens are carefully preserved and
even exhibited in museums in many European cities, are
still alive with the same techniques and motifs. Now let’s
go to the starting point of this story that started about 850
years ago together.
The history of Uşak Carpet
With the battle of Miryokefalon in 1176, Uşak harbouring
the Turkmen tribes, which were very poor in sheep breeding
and weaving, took the first step about 850 years ago to
become a carpet production centre. Because Turkmens used
22 DECOR • March - April 2019
to make their wool themselves. They used to produce their
own consumption materials by producing socks, sweaters,
caps, rugs, saddlebags and small carpets with these wool
they had made. The wool of the sheep they had kept was
white, bright, flexible and robust as well. The natural plants
which give root dyes were a lot in its environment. In other
words the city have all the necessary things needed to be
the centre of a carpet.
The carpets and kilims woven in Uşak discovered by the
Venetian merchants who trade in Anatolia between the 13th
and 15th centuries. It had started to be sold these carpets
from the ships of Izmir to the Balkans and then to the
far corners of Europe with the merchants’ mule caravans.
The classical period of Uşak rugs, woven as a result of the
unification of the raw material coming from fertile lands,
starts from the first half of the 16th century and lasts
throughout the 17th century. Yavuz Sultan Selim’s successful
expeditions on the Safavids and Mamluks brought famous
artists from art centres such as Cairo and Tabriz to Istanbul.
The palaces, mosques and pavilions suitable for the glory
of the empire, whose borders
are based on three continents,
begin to be built during this
period. When large and new
types of carpets are needed
in these buildings, muralist
household staff are assigned
to obtain new designs. Uşak is
a unique city for the muralists
who make up a new style of
carpet by mixing with the
Anatolian folk style the style
they adopt from the famous art
centres of the period such as
Tabriz, Isfahan and Cairo.
Apart from these, every human emotion was conveyed with
motifs. Wool warp of the carpet indicates the quality and
longevity of the carpet.
Uşak Belediyesi Dokur Evi’ne misafirperverliğinden dolayı teşekkür ederiz.
The patterns drawn by Muralist household designers start
the classical period of Uşak carpet making, which is the
result of the reinterpretation of Uşak by women.
Uşak carpets with root dyes and
simple colours do not contain many
colours. 20 varieties of Uşak carpets
are being exhibited in Uşak Dokur
House.
Paris Louvre, Florence Bardini, New
York Metropolitan, Philedelphia,
London Victoria and Albert, National
Gallery of Art, Budapest, Istanbul
Turkish and Islamic Art, Berlin
Islamic Arts, Metropolitan National
and Kuwait museums. There are also
samples are being located in Konya
Mevlana and Istanbul Foundations
Carpet Museums.
Uşak Carpet Kilim House hosts
local motifs
In Uşak Carpet Kilim House there
has been many models used and
donated by families in Usak for
about a century. The details of the prominent models are
evoking admiration.
Its difference is in its knot
The biggest difference of Uşak carpets, which are produced
entirely as manual labour, comes from the usage of the
knot frequency and the Gördes knot. Uşak carpets, which
proves their fame all over the world with 90.000 Turkish
knots, 100% natural dye, 100% sheep wool and eye-catching
motifs in the square meters, woven with great efforts the
hand-made totally. In the carpets, the designs of the weaver
were observed by observing nature. They have also worked
with the designs of the sky as well as herbal, and animal
motifs. The samples of them are also being exhibited in
Medallion Uşak carpet
Uşak carpets with medallions came as a more important
group in the 16th century and the long ones up to 10
meters were woven. It reflects the infinity with its rounded
medallions in its rounded middle axis. The drawing of the
patterns of these carpets were given to the muralists,
miniature and illuminated manuscript palace painters.
However, they were also influenced by Persian carpets.
The medallion in the middle axis describes creativity and
infinity.
Birded Uşak Carpet
It is an example of the white floors of Uşak carpets. On its
floor there is a leaf motif facing each other. Leaf motifs
are similar to the bird because of the mutual. Bird motifs
used in Turkish carpets have various meanings. Owl and
crow represent the bad luck, the dove, pigeon and bulbul
represent the good luck. Bird; is a symbol of happiness, joy
and love. It also symbolizes power and strength. It is an
imperial symbol of various settlements in Central Anatolia.
Birds also refer to divine messages and long life.
Uşak carpet with stars
The star motif expresses fertility in Turkish carpets. It
includes meanings such as birth, peace in life and the
renewal of the universe. Palmet and Rumis are seen in the
versions of eight-pointed stars in Uşak carpets. Geometric
flowers, short branches and hook motifs are seen in the
empty spaces of its floor.
Lotto Uşak carpet
The large main border is stylized in light and dark red on
blue background, swastika and rosette motifs. The main
floor is divided into 10 transverse 5 and longitudinal 11
squares in red. They are filled with double rumi motifs
and octagons that are stylized in yellow. In the whole
composition based on an infinity, there is a cross shaped
pattern at the junctions of the squares.
Sprinkle Uşak carpet
In the sprinkle Uşak carpet model depicts the plants in
the region. Positive emotions, thoughts and fertile soil
expressing herbal figures given place. The carpet model
houses different leaves and flowers. For example, there is a
dagger leaf motif in the shape of a sickle, which is unique to
the Uşak region.
Cloudy Uşak carpet
The cloudy model is also called Central Asian or Chinese
cloud as well. Since the symmetrical shapes on the ground
are likened to the cloud shape, the repeated use of clouds
describes the continuity of life.
Göbekli Uşak carpet
Here is one of the most important models with a different
technique than others. The most important detail of the
model is the completion of the middle of the four quarters.
Easy to use, lightweight prayer rugs
There is also a separate room where miniature models are
called prayer rugs in Uşak Carpet Kilim House. These prayer
rugs are again adorned with models that are the basis of
our culture. It is a little easier to use as it is a miniature as
a prayer rug or as a souvenir.
Çintemani Uşak carpet
We can say that the composition of the Çintemani model
is completely independent of the others. Two rows of wavy
lines, the Chinese (Asian) cloud, the tiger tread and the
triangular three balls were described as the back of the
leopard. The chieftains of Central Asian tribes take the peltry
of these animals; in war and peace; they regarded it as
in various sultan’s garments and items (talismanic shirts,
Turkish knot was used. Hand rope or worsted rope was used.
Root and chemical dyes were used.
There are 89,600 nodes in square meters.
Uşak carpet is at the White House
The President of the United States, George Washington,
used the Uşak carpet in the paintings he let it to be made
while the White House was first built in the late 1700s.
Uşak carpets are used as wall ornament in the palaces of
England. Also noteworthy is the fact that the important
agreements made between countries are on the paintings
in the Uşak City History Museum where the Uşak carpet is
laid.
At that time, managers in Europe used the carpet as a
representation of prestige and wealth, and it was a luxury
object owned only by high-level people. Artists such as
famous painters Lorenzo Lotto and Hans Holbein also
hosted the Uşak carpets in their famous paintings. Lotto, a
world-famous carpet model dating back to the 1400s, took
its name after located in Lorenzo Lotto’s painting at all.

sector Pera Halı offers different designs
in the field of patchwork.
Winning in women initiators category with
her project in the Aegean Region Nihan Cengiz
established Pera Halı (Pera Carpet) brand.
Combining her experience with the power of
design, Cengiz pulled attention especially in the
patchwork field.
The same love for 40 years…
Pera Carpet was established in 2013 to evaluate
our 38 years experience on patchwork same as
the carpet and Turkish Kilim industry. The basic
cause which motivates us to action is giving new
life again as reusing the old, wither hand knotted
carpets and Kilims. That is why
we are struggling to perform our
mission which had determined
to provide cheap and high
quality products for years.
All processes from one point
Underlining the fact that they
revive old handmade carpets,
Cengiz details these processes:
“Since we de all processes
applied on our products by
firms in our own structure we
can confidently offer them
to our customers. In order
to give significant traces to
sweet homes and places, we
will continue to struggle to
produce carpets and rugs
which have won to society and
economy with our experienced
professional team without
sacrificing quality.”
Modernized Vintage carpets
Cengiz says that they always develop new designs by
constantly following up the trends and blending the old
and new concepts. She briefed, “Our main principle is
always to stich on new and trendy. One of our activities
at this regard is “Cannabis Print Collection”. What we are
telling with this is “Modernized Vintage”, which is blended
with old and modern and is offered to the customer
with warmer, more elegant and more sophisticated for
homes. The best part of these designs is that they can be
customized. To be designed with the preferences of the
customer these can be applied on products made of fully
natural cannabis, cotton and wool. With these wonders
you will enjoy your own art as soon as you enter the
house. Your smile is our smile. With the traces inherited
from the past…”
Demir’e devredilen Karun Halı Kilim, yoluna 3 ortakla devam
ediyor. Şirketin pazarlama ve ticari faaliyetleri da Made in Oushak
markası altında gerçekleştiriliyor.
Ayşe Erdem, İsmail Demir, Ali Aytun
tarafından idare edilen şirketin
yeni faaliyetlerini dinlemek ve
yeniden hayat bulan Uşak halılarının
hikayelerini dinlemek üzere bir röportaj
gerçekleştirdik.
Karun Halı Kilim tezgahlarında ne tür
halılar dokunuyor? Sipariş üzerine mi
çalışıyorsunuz?
Ağırlıklı olarak el dokuma modern
halı ve kilimlerin imalatını yapıyoruz.
Sipariş üzerine çalışıyoruz. Klasiğin
dışında farklı ürünler ortaya çıkarmaya
gayret ediyoruz.
Yeni nesil, el dokuma halıdan ziyade sanayiyi tercih ediyor.
Şuan dokuyucu çalışanlarımız daha çok 35-40 yaş üzerinde. Bu
noktada sıkıntı yaşıyoruz.

Karun Carpet and Rugs preserves hand-woven carpet the heritage
with its re-interpreted old carpets.
What kind of carpets are
being woven on Karun
Carpet Kilim carpet
looms? Are you working
on an order basis?
We mainly manufacture
hand-woven modern
carpets and rugs. We’re
working on order basis.
We strive to find different
products outside of the
classic. We usually process
the designs sent by
architects and customers,
and we turn the rugs
we have unravelled into
the carpet again. We do
boutique businesses.
Founded in 1986 by İbrahim Demir and then transferred
to İsmail Demir, Karun Halı Kilim continues its journey
with 3 partners. The company’s marketing and commercial
activities are also carried out under the brand name of Made
in Uşak.
We have had an interview with Ayşe Erdem, İsmail Demir
company and listen to the stories of Uşak carpets, which
have been revived.
What are your most
different models?
The difference between the
products that we
have now revealed
as a company is
the use of ravel
fabric, hemp and
hair. Hemp is
already a plant, it
can be woven and
processed easily. We
whiten and wash the
old carpets weaving
with hemp. We also
provide employment
for housewives in
the region. In this
way we present a
herbal study as well.
The goat hair was
already in the tents
previously used by
the Yoruks. They
are no longer used
too much, therefore
we have begun to
purchase the worn
ones at all. Again,
it goes through
washing and
per square meter. The number of stitches
per one square meter is 40.000 in thick
carpets and 80.000 in the thin carpets.
The number of stitches varies according
to the characteristics of the pattern, the
space to be used and the characteristics
of the person. A carpet of 6 square
meters is being woven on an average of 3
months.
What is the process after the carpet is
being woven?
First of all, pattern studies are being
done. Then it is being weaved at the
loom in 1-1,5 months according to its size.
After washing, shaving and maintenance
are being done. It is being washed 7 or 8
times. We prefer 5 mm pile height so that
it is easy to clean. Then we deliver it to
the customer.
maintenance procedures. Housewives dismantle them in their
homes and we use them in a natural way with their original
colours.
Don’t use paint on any of your products?
We do not use in most of our products, but they are being
used in our products which are produced by 100% natural
wool.
The Uşak rope is as precious as its rug. What are the
features?
The reason why Uşak rug continues for many years and takes
place in museums is the characteristic of wool used. When
we look at these carpets, long fibers have always been used.
The fiber used is 8-10 microns thick. The root paint used
also shines ever and it is durable. It does not go to pieces,
therefore it is possible to find examples of very old Uşak
carpet.
Is there a story you want to share about carpet patterns
and weaving?
In the carpet, the weaver weave what we give them as a
design. But in rugs, the weaver weaves the objects according
to his own mind as they are inspired by. And many different
samples available. For example, I have a client now. He
assigns a different color to the 3-5 stitches as of the
signature.
Are you sending products abroad?
We are a company working on 100% export. We export mainly
to France and Germany. We are also rarely sending products
to America.
How long does it take to weave a carpet?
The weave of the carpets is related to the number of stitches
How many people do you employ?
Now we have about 60 looms. 150 people
work with these looms. Our production
number varies according to order status.
What does the Uşak carpet mean to you?
One of the most beautiful features of Uşak carpet is the use
of non-symmetrical models. They are all inspired by images
in nature, and you cannot find geometric patternsbon them
for sure. They have taken different names; Sapanlı Uşak has
taken its name from the bird slingshots for instance, and
Kuşlu Uşak has taken its name from the bird figures at all.
In the past, many artists were inspired by these carpets.
Is there a place that you offer specifically?
When we make Uşak carpets, we adapt to the colours of
today without disturbing the design feature. Since Uşak
carpets used in palaces and large places in the past, they
have a narrower and longer forms. We produced special
carpets for Sabancı’s Vaniköy mansion. We wove 150 square
meters of carpets in
front of the palaces
in Eskişehir. Other
than that, the projects
were carried out
by architects and
companies that we are
contracting.
Is there another topic
you’d like to add?
The new generation
prefers industry rather
than hand woven
carpets. Our weaving
workers are now more
than 35-40 years old.
We’re having trouble
at this point.
Halılarınızda Uşak’a özgü motifler mi kullanıyorsunuz yoksa
Amerika New York’ta halı
alım satımıyla başlamış,
sonrasında çok kaliteli ve
özgün ürünler üretebilmek için
kendi üretimini yapmasının
gerekli olduğunu düşünüp
Uşak’a gelmiş. Suat İzmirli
Uşak ziyaretinde Uşak Halısının
duayenlerinden Sadık Uşaklıgil
ile tanışmış ve birlikte
çalışmaya başlamışlardır. Uşak
halısı hakkında bilinmesi gereken her şeyi bilen Sadık Uşaklıgil,

Do you use Uşak-specific motifs in your carpets or do
you adapt the trends?
Uşak carpet has a very high brand value and is preferred
in markets like America. But nowadays, the concept of
decoration has changed a lot. Even in Belgium, Italy
and even in the United States, the preferred products
are different. For this reason, we adapt the designs that
are preferred by certain locomotive companies from our
designer customers. Especially we prefer the colours of
today, we have completely left the classic colours.
Can you tell us about your new collections?
In our collections, we can do everything that our materials
and colors fit. Usually we are working on the Uşak carpet.
We are not looking for an innovation, we are keeping on to
use the same techniques that were used 150 years ago. We
are still using same kirkit hits as same as how they were
woven in the old days. Our main difference is washing.
Some companies finish this process with two washing by
using chemicals, we do 7 times washing and do not use
chemicals.
weaving frequency. Additionally, an Uşak carpet is wool
weft and wool warp. This is its biggest difference from
other carpets. The advantage of this is that it is long
lasting, because the cotton used in other carpets loses its
features more quickly.
How long are your term lengths?
Carpet weaving takes 3 months. The preparation also takes
a minimum of 6 months. The average production time of
Uşak carpets from production to delivery takes about 1
year. We are a customer-oriented company and we usually
work on order basis.
What makes the Uşak carpet different?
Sadık Bey, who was a doyen in his field, designs patterns
such as Uşak with Stars, Uşak with locket, and Kuşlu Uşak.
One of the characteristics of Uşak carpets is its presence
in the famous painters’ paintings. The rope needs to be
Halıda doğallık moda
Bu sezon müşteriler tarafından istenen ürünlere çok
önem verdiklerini de ifade eden Cevher: “Bu sezon pazar
araştırmalarımız sonucunda halıda doğallık, tuşe ve
katlanabilirliğin aranan özellikler olduğunu gördük. Ar-R-
dedi.
Çocuklar için özel koleksiyon
Çocuklar için de ayrı bir koleksiyon çıkardıklarından
bahseden Royal Halı A.Ş Genel Müdürü M. Nazif Koca
sözlerini şu şekilde sonlandırdı:” Bahsetmek istediğim
bir diğer yeniliğimiz yeni çıkarmış olduğumuz Hello Kids
Naturalness on the carpet is now a
of our market research this season, we
touching and fold ability of a carpet are
the desired properties at all. Our R & D
department has explored the materials
produced with respectful production
processes by revealing the difference in
their research and went on to investigate
the alternative products within these
materials accordingly. In our research, we
saw that Lenzing Group produces fibres
from wood and wood pulp from certified
and controlled sources. TENCEL Lyocell and
TENCEL Modal fibres, which are derived
from sustainable tree sources, have been
used in our carpets. In this way, our users
enjoy the natural comfort in the carpets
origin fibres and coloured by special dyeing methods.
In this way,
environmentally
sensitive, touchable
and foldable
products have
emerged accordingly.
This also gives of
feeling of walking
in the nature while
our customers are
at their homes. And
since it is a fast
separate collection
for the children
our new Hello Kids collection. While creating our Hello
Kids collection for the children’s rooms, we paid special
purpose, we obtained the
Fustat Life, dinamik yapısı ve zamansız tasarımları yeni sezona hazır.
Makine halıları ihracatta zirveyi korurken bir önceki
yıla göre %7,8 oranında bir düşüş yaşandı. Siz firma
bazında ihracat rakamlarınıza baktığınızda tabloyu nasıl
yorumluyorsunuz?
İnsanlar artık makine
halılarından çok baskılı
dekoratif halılara yönelim
göstermeye başladılar.
Bunların en büyük
nedenlerinden birkaçı ise
kolay yıkanabilir olması, toz
tutmaması, kolay taşınabilir
olmasıdır. Zaman ilerledikçe
yeni nesil (baskılı dekoratif)
halılar daha fazla ön plana
çıkmaya ve daha çok
kullanılmaya başlanacaktır. Bu
da ihracat rakamlarını olumlu
yönde etkileyecektir.
2019 yılının kalan 11 aylık
döneminde katılmayı
planladığınız yurtiçi ve
yurtdışı fuar ve etkinlikler
var mı?
11-14 Ocak 2019 tarihinde
Almanya’nın Hannover
şehrinde düzenlenen fuara
katılım gösterdik. Bunun
doğrultusunda Gaziantep’te
düzenlenecek olan halı fuarına
katılım göstereceğiz. Halı ile
ilgili tüm fuarlara elimizden
geldiğince katılım göstererek,
markamızı temsil edeceğiz.
Türk halı sektörünün üretim
ve ihracat gücü hakkındaki
görüşleriniz neler?
Türk halıları ve kilimleri geçmişten günümüze göze hitap eden
ve kalitesiyle kendini ispatlamış olması tüm dünya ülkeleri
tarafından bilinmektedir. Yeni nesil dijital halılarda da aynı
özen ve hassasiyeti gösterip yine tüm dünyaya Türk halıların
adını duyurmak istiyoruz.
Sizin eklemek istediğiniz bir konu var mı?
Son olarak Fustat Life’ı diğer firmalarından ayıran yönlerinden
bahsetmek istiyorum;

Fustat Life is ready for the new season with its dynamic structure and timeless designs.
Which models will be at the forefront in 2019?
Under the light of our experience we earned in the industry
the season will be highly dynamic. Retro looking models
will be seen in carpet designs. We also think that designs
that reflects contemporary lines will also take place among
popular models.
Though new in the industry, old in experiences, Fustatlife
Could we have info about you and your company in
Our brand Fustatlife has a story of one and a half years
With our young and dynamic staff and innovative ideas, we
emphasize on serving to our corporate customers. We want
to be an international brand and aim to sell our products in
all countries.
You are a producing company headquartered in Istanbul.
How do you manage your sales in domestic market?
We sell our products through wholesalers in domestic
market. We have no direct distributors or retail sales.
Machine carpet sales fell down 7.8% last year while
exports were at the highest level. How do you explain
this in terms of your company’s export performance?
People have begun to prefer decorative printed carpets
more than machine made carpets. One of the reasons is
that they are cleaned easily, are not tufted and easy to
transport. They will be more common in the future, we hope.
And this will effect export figures even more positively.
Do you have any plans to participate in fairs at home
zamanın ihtiyaçlarına göre teknolojisini yenileyerek
başlayan bu yolculuk tamamen modern dokuma
Yeni koleksiyonunuzda hangi
temadan yola çıktınız? Mobilya
ve dekorasyon dünyasında olan
yenilikler halıdaki trendleri ne
ölçüde etkiliyor?
Koleksiyonlarımızı yeni moda
trendlerini takip ederek
oluşturmaktayız. Bu doğrultuda Ar-
Ge çalışmalarımızı Ar-Ge ekibimizle
birlikte yürütmekteyiz. Mobilya
ve dekorasyon dünyasında olan
yenilikler, halıdaki trendleri yüzde
yüz etkiliyor ve bu yüzden trendleri
tabi ki takip etmekteyiz.
Yaren Halı olarak müşterilerinize
sunduğunuz hizmetler nelerdir?
Müşteri neden sizi tercih etmeli?
Rekabetin yoğun olduğu
sektörümüzde hızlı ve sürekli
servis ile aynı zamanda yenilikçi
anlayışımızla hizmet sunmaktayız. Geniş renk
ve ürün çeşitliliğimizden dolayı müşterilerimizin
tercihiyiz.
Bu çeşitlerin ihracat dağılımı nasıl? Toplam
Bizim beklentimiz
2019 yılının iyi geçeceği düşüncesidir. 2019 sonu
Acrylic, shaggy, pp Heatset, frize, polyester, wall-towall
and many other types of carpet production. Since
our establishment, we have been serving our local and
international customers with a wide range of products.
What theme did you depart with in your new
collection? To what extent are the innovations in the
world of furniture and decoration affecting the trends
in the carpet?
We create our collections by following the new fashion
trends. In line with this, we carry out our R & D activities
together with our R & D team. Innovations in the world of
furniture and decoration affect the trends in the carpet
one hundred percent and therefore we follow the trends.
What are the services you provide to your customers
as Yaren Carpet? Why should the customer prefer and
choose you?
In the sector where competition is very intense at all, we
offer fast and continuous
service and at the same
time with the sensibilities
of innovative service
understanding. We are the
choice of our customers
because of our wide range of
colours and products.
How is the export distribution of these varieties? How
many countries do you have exports to?
80% of our production is export and 20% is for domestic
market. We have exports to more than 40 countries.
When we look at the general carpet export figures,
we see a decline last year. How do you interpret this?
When you consider your company in particular, how do
the figures proceed compared to the previous year?
In general, when we evaluate the economic conditions of
the countries in which we export to, the conditions are
really becoming more difficult and this situation reflects
negatively to our sales accordingly. However, with our
efforts as a team and with fairs we have joined, we are
trying to skip this situation healthy by adding new markets
to our organization. When we consider our company in
particular, we do not have any changes in the figures. We
aim to increase our sales for this year.
What are your
expectations for
2019? Is there a new
investment or project
on your agenda?
We observe that the
general opinion for
2019 is negative. Our
expectation is that 2019
will be a good year. At
the end of 2019 and at
the beginning of 2020,
our new machinery and
factory investments will
continue.
Geçtiğimiz yıl içinde 5 milyon ürün satarak hızlı bir büyüme kaydeden
LCW Home, Mart ayında yaz koleksiyonunu lanse edecek.
2016 Eylül’den bu yana yurtiçi ve
yurtdışında büyük bir ivme yakalayan LCW
Home, 2018 yılını 5 milyon ürün satışıyla
kapattı. 2019 yılında 150 mağazayı bulmayı
planlayan marka, Denizli’de yeni bir LCW
Home ofisi açacak olmanın heyecanını
yaşıyor. Tüm LC Waikiki mağazalarında kasa
bölgesinde kolonya ve oda kokusu gibi ev
kozmetik ürünlerinin sergilendiğini belirten
LCW Home Marka Grup Müdürü Ümmühan
Şan, yeni bir projeyle kozmetik duvarı
oluşturacaklarını ve böylelikle sergilenen
ürün sayısında artış olacağını açıkladı. Mart
ayında lanse edilecek yeni koleksiyondan
da bahsettiğimiz sohbetimizde Şan, doğal
figür ve desenlerin kullanılmaya devam
ettiğini kaydederek, tropikal ve marine
temalarının detaylarını aktardı.
LCW Home Marka Grup Müdürü Ümmühan Şan
LCW Home markasının kuruluşundan bu
yana öyküsünü dinleyebilir miyiz?
2016 Eylül ayında ilk mağazamızı açmıştık.
O dönem 11 mağazayla yola çıkmıştık, şu
anda 133 mağazadayız. Bu mağazaların
70 tanesi yurtdışında 63 tanesi yurtiçinde
aktif.
olacak. Daha yaygın, daha oturmuş ve
alanında uzman bir ekibimiz var. Şuanda
250 kategoride üretim yapıyoruz. Müşteriler
bizi LC Waikiki markası olarak zaten
seviyordu, Home ürünlerini de kullanmaya
başladıkça talepler ciddi oranda arttı.
64 DECOR • March - April 2019
Yurtdışında
daha hızlı
büyümenizin
nedeni sizce
ne?
Yurtdışında LC
Waikiki ile benzer
bir dataya sahibiz.
Girdiğimiz pazarlar
diğerlerine nispeten
daha yüksek potansiyele
sahip bölgelerdi. Türkiye
ev tekstilinin merkezi
sayılabilecek ülkelerden bir
tanesi, dolayısıyla burada marka
sayısı, markaların tecrübe ve
olgunluğu çok yüksek. Bizim girdiğimiz
pazarların çoğunda nitelikli ev tekstili
markaları yok. Alışveriş alışkanlıkları
çoğunlukla süpermarketin ev tekstili
reyonlarından yapılıyor. Açıkçası girdiğimiz
bu ülkelerde kültürel olarak da ev tekstili
alışverişi yapmak çok yaygın olmayabiliyor.
Fakat güzel bir uyum yakaladık. Piyasada
ürünlerimiz ciddi anlamda
çekici geliyor, fiyat olarak da avantajlı durumdayız.
Yurtdışında şuan kaç
noktada aktifsiniz ve 2019 sonu hedefleri nelerdir?
Yurtdışında şuan 73 mağazamız var ve 24 farklı ülkedeyiz.
Bu ülkelerin her biri bambaşka coğrafyada; Arnavutluk,
Belarus, Cezayir, Fas, Gürcistan, Kazakistan, Lübnan,
Tunus, Ukrayna, Ürdün, Polonya, Romanya… Yani aslına
bakarsanız biz bir anlamda yayılmacı politika izledik. Bu
ülkelerin potansiyellerini anlamaya gayret ettik. Şu an
Denizli’deki LCW Home ofisin açılış sebebi oradaki
havlu ve ev tekstili ürünlerinin yoğun olması mı? Peki
diğer ürünlerle alakalı böyle bir çalışma olacak mı?
Açıkçası Denizli’deki ofis bile 2 sene öncesinde
gündemimizde yoktu. Çok spontane ve ihtiyaca göre
hareket ediyoruz. 2 sene sonra röportaj yaptığımızda belki
de çok daha fazlası olacak.
Yeni koleksiyonlarda hangi temalar olacak?
Son dönemde sıkça doğal desen ve figürlerle
karşılaşıyoruz. Artık natürel ve doğadan ilham alınan
desenler tercih ediliyor.
Ombre desenini
çok fazla göreceğiz. Denizdeki renk geçişlerini yansıtıyor
olacağız. Bu sezon büyük çiçekler, palmiyelerden ziyade
çıtır kır çiçekleri kullandık. Hatta çiçekler sapları ve
kökleriyle birlikte işleniyor. Yeni koleksiyonumuzu Mart
ayında lanse edeceğiz.
Since September 2016, LCW Home who has gained a
great acceleration in both inland and outland markets,
closed the year 2018 with 5 million product sales.
The brand, which plans to reach 150 stores in 2019, is
experiencing the excitement of opening a new LCW
Home office in Denizli nowadays. LCW Home Brand
Group Manager Ümmühan Şan who has stated that
home cosmetic products such as cologne and room
fragrance were exhibited in all LC Waikiki stores’ cash
with a new project, and thus they would have a chance
In our conversation, which we mentioned from the new
collection to be launched in March, Şan has stated that
natural figures and patterns continued to be used, and
she also explained the details of tropical and marine
themes.
Can we please listen to the story of the LCW Home
brand since its inception?
In September 2016, we have opened our first store. We
had started with 11 stores at that time, we are now in
133 stores. 70 of these stores are active at abroad and
63 of them are active at our country. As we think of the
opening processes of the stores, we can indicate that we
were thinking to grow more rapidly in the country, but
we have grown faster abroad. We have experienced our
66 DECOR • March - April 2019
LCW Home, which has achieved a rapid growth by selling 5 million items
in the past year, will launch its summer collection in March.
best period in 2018, since our establishment. Because we
have spent the first two years by trying to understand
the sector and the customer. In 2018 we acquired a solid
place in the collection, product variety and quality, and
sold about 5 million items in the year. In the period we
started, there were 10 people in our team and now we
have 33 people in total. We will now have a small LCW
Home office in Denizli. We have a more extensive, more
established and experienced team. We are currently
producing in 250 categories. Customers already loved us
as the LC Waikiki brand. Demands have begun to increase
significantly as “Home Products” begun to be used.
Why do you think you’re growing faster abroad?
We have a similar data with LC Waikiki abroad. The
markets we entered were relatively higher potential than
others. One of the country that can be considered as the
centre of home textile is Turkey. Hence the number of
brands here, the experience and maturity of the brand
is very high. Most of the markets we enter do not have
qualified home textile brands. The shopping habits are
mostly made within the home textile departments of
the supermarkets. Clearly, in these countries, it is not
very easy to change the habit of home textiles culturally.
But we have complied very well at all. In the market,
our products are seriously attractive, the prices are also
advantageous.
At how many points are
you active abroad now?
What are your targets at the
end 2019?
We have 73 stores abroad and we
are in 24 different countries. Each
of these countries in a completely
different geography; Albania, Belarus,
Algeria, Morocco, Georgia, Kazakhstan,
Lebanon, Tunisia, Ukraine, Jordan, Poland,
Romania…
In other words, we have followed the
expansionist policy in a sense. We tried to
understand the potentials of these countries.
We are trying to deepen in the countries we are
currently entering. For example, Kazakhstan was one
of the
first countries we entered, we entered with one store
and now we have 5 stores. Morocco is a country where
we entered very much later. We have entered the market
with one store there in a similar way. We are now in 8
stores. This depth will bring 10-15 more stores abroad in
2019. We will be opening 10 new stores in the country.
We can say that we are going to reach at least 150
stores.
There is one thing that catches my attention, which
is that you have a very serious Arab interest in your
stores. Does this interest you see from Qatar, Saudi
Arabia and Dubai make it easier for you to open
stores in those regions?
LC Waikiki’s store already exists in some of those
countries. At LCW Home, we want to enter those stores
because the interest of Arab customers is very high in
certain stores. Our products provide a price advantage for
them. Those regions are particularly interested in intense
aroma fragrances. I think there is a big potential in that
area, why should it not be? For example, Soap is the
most sold product among the Arab customers. We have it
at our every store’s cash point. These soaps are not used
for cleaning purposes, but are used for the purpose of
spreading odors in the laundry and in the cabinets.
Although we cannot enter to the markets with our home
textiles, we sell our home cosmetics products at all LC
Waikiki stores’ cash points. Even at this points, a new
project that will increase the number of products will
be implemented soon. We will enter into 250 stores
with home cosmetics walls. Thus, even if not all of the
collections in our stores, every product of our collections
will certainly take their places in our LC Waikiki Stores.
More specifically, what are your varieties in your new
floor products?
The floor group is actually a group we discovered later.
We’ve done some experiments in this area until we
understand customer demands at all. Now we have a
group of mats and a small group of carpet and runners.
In our budget, we have spared the most part for mats and
carpets.
The reason for this is that we receive very serious
demands in this area. People now prefer small rugs.
We are putting small carpets and mats in about 10 to
11 different patterns to the stores in any period. I wish
we could have more space and exhibit the products of
this group more.Recently printed carpets have started
to take a very serious share from the market. Washable
and printed carpets are being more preferred. That has
become our chance. Of course, hand-woven carpets are
very beautiful, even I also love them very much. But the
costs are very high. Customers like to apply the current
trendy patterns and themes at home. Thanks to such
technology, it is possible to provide this speed at all. Our
products are very practical and washable in the machines
at all. The most satisfying point is that the products are
washable.
The opening of the LCW Home office in Denizli is due
to the high density of towels and home textiles in
there? Well, will there be such a study related to
other products as well?
Obviously, the office in Denizli was not even on our
agenda 2 years ago. We are acting very spontaneous and
according to need. When we do interview two years later,
maybe there will be much more.
What themes will be in the new collections?
Recently, we often encounter natural patterns and
figures. Natural and nature inspired
patterns are now preferred. Their distorted and stylized
states will be at the forefront. For example, we opened
the last winter with the theme of animal print. Then, in
all of the companies, he was prominent with autumn
leaves, bark images, raw woods, wrought iron products or
natural colored towels and matte surfaces.
Both intrinsic detox and home detox have become very
trendy and we will also start the summer with our
capsule collection accordingly. Our minimal, modern
and stylish designs will be at the forefront. There is of
course a tropical, but as in the past years, we preferred
the colors inspired by nature rather than neon and lively
tropics.
In marine theme, we will handle the theme of nature and
the protection of creatures and we will go underwater.
Shades of blue and green will be weighted. We’ll see a
lot of the Ombre patterns. We will be reflecting color
transitions of the sea. This season we used big flowers,
crispy wildflowers rather than palm trees. Even flowers
are being processed with stems and roots at all. We will
launch our new collection in March.
Portekizli Tekstil Sanatçısı Vanessa Barragão’nun
Domotex Hannover fuarında tekstil atıklarını geri
dönüştürerek yaptığı sualtı dünyası ve mercanlar
tasarımı büyük beğeni topladı.
Tekstil endüstrisi, dünyayı kirleten sektörlerin başında
geliyor. Neredeyse her işlemde kimyasallar kullanılır.
Bence
insanlar, harika bir şey başarabilmeye duyduğu ihtiyaçtan
dolayı böyle şeyler yapıyorlar. Bir sanatçı olarak sanatımı
yapıyorum çünkü duygularımı ve görüşlerimi ifade etmenin
doğru yolu bu. Biri eserlerimden birini kopyalamaya
çalışırsa, beni incitse bile, bana zarar veremez. Ama
kopyalamanın onurlu bir eylem olmadığını, herkesin özgün
sanatsal dilini kullanması gerektiğine inanıyorum.

The underwater world and coral
reefs made by Portugese Textile
Artisan Vanessa Barragão with the
recycled textile wastes attracted a
great deal of interest at Domotex
Hannover fair.
The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. In almost every
process chemicals are used, especially when it comes to the fibers treatment
and dyeing. All the machinery used requires tons of energy while producing a lot
of waste and disposable trash. It is extremely harmful for our world and it affects
all of its different natural environments, particularly the ocean which absorbs
90% of the atmospheric pollution, warming itself up to the point that so many
species get threatened. Coral reefs, which sustain so many other creatures, is
one of the most endangered.
Vanessa believes in an upcycling effort towards the right way to fight against
the kind of negative mindset described above. All of the materials used come
from the dead-stock from several local factories which is first cleaned and then
selected to recycle and reuse in her projects.
Her production is completely artisanal and handmade by
using ancestral techniques, like latch hook, felt, knitting,
macramé and crochet, to create her artworks inspired by the
coral reefs.
The internet is an ever growing fixture in many artists’
lives and businesses, could you talk about the role the
internet plays in your artistic and professional life?
As you say, the internet is an enormous and diversified
universe. For me, I cannot say that is the best way to show
my art work, because I believe that being in the same
space and time of my work, being able to see, touch and
feel it, is the best way
to contemplate and
understand the vision
and message present in
art. Even so, I must admit
that the internet is a
faster way to promote my
work and myself as an
artist, and, besides that,
it’s the most efficient
way to do it on a large
scale, understanding
its power of reaching
thousands of different
people, all over the
world, in a short space of
time. As a verdict of my
experience, Instagram
was the “boom” for
my art disclosure, even
though I had started with
Pinterest and Facebook,
during my master degree
in Fashion Design in 2015.
I never expected to reach so many people and to spread my
work throughout the world, and when I sold my first piece of
art, on Instagram, I was shocked, in a good way, and that gave
me more reasons and will to keep going and keep working
hard for my purpose.
Where do you find inspiration for your work? In what
ways has the internet and/or social media impacted your
design process?
When I was younger, I used to travel with my family through
different countries and continents. Every time we visited
Caribbean countries or more exotics and natural places,
we always tried to dive into those beautiful waters full of
life and colors. And those memories are my biggest and
strongest inspiration. The feeling of being overwhelmed by
those creatures, being an unknown and small living being in
those universes, feeling the need to see those colors, finding
out more and being surrounded by that life, are some of the
feelings that I remember and that I keep in my memory and
heart.
But time flies really fast and my memories are not as clear as
they were back then, and that is where Internet comes into
my design process, since I can search and find out different
images of the deep sea. If I lived somewhere where I could
dive easily, it would be really amazing, but since that is
something really hard to do, diving into the internet is the
only way to revive those memories. Besides that, looking
through different photos and videos of complex structures
of coral reefs, different creatures, and different seas etc. has
helped me to get even more ideas!
How have you, as an artist, found your creative voice?
I use to say that I came from a family of artists: my
grandmothers are knitters and do a lot of crochet, my
maternal grandfather and my father are really skillful people
and wood artisans, my grandmother used to paint and she is
a knitter and a crochet maker too. So, since my childhood, I
was in contact with artisanal techniques and different types
of art work that helped my artistic abilities and influenced
me as an artist. Besides that, I always loved and cared a lot
about art and, since I always show that interest, my parents
always supported and motivated me to follow my dreams
and my artistic vain. After so many years of studies, so
many experimentations with different types of art, such as
painting and sculpture, in order to discover what I really like
to do, I finally found out my own way to express myself. I was
studying for my master’s degree in Fashion Design, when I met
and got in touch with the wool process and the art of making
textiles. And then, when I started to explore more about it, I
started to discover, at the same time, myself and my essence
as an artist, creating my own language, my creative voice.
Sites like Pinterest and Instagram are popular places for
artists’ to share their own work. Have you encountered
copies of your work online? If you see, what are your
strategies for dealing with it?
Those are some complicated and sad moments, and,
unfortunately it has already happened to me. In my opinion,
and being aware of human nature and the way we act and
feel, I believe that when someone tries to copy a piece of art,
the reason for that action is the need or desire to feel the
accomplishment of something wonderful. As an artist, I do my
art because it’s the right way to express my feelings and my
visions. If someone tries to copy one of my works, even if it
hurts me, I understand that it may have not been to cause me
harm, but maybe it was an attempt to admire my work or even
to try to see what I see. Even so, I believe that copying is not
an honored action, and each one of us must be able to create
our own unique artistic language in order to express ourselves
and be faithful to our own essence.
1984 yılında kurulan Flair Rugs, İngiltere ve
dünyadaki büyük perakendecilere hizmet
veren bir numaralı kilim şirketi. Bu şirketin
Pazarlama Müdürü olan Snead Donohoe ile
Domotex Hannover 2019’da keyifli bir röportaj
yaptık.
Öncelikle bize kendiniz ve Flair Rugs
hakkında bilgi verebilir misiniz?
Marka olarak halılara tutkuluyuz. Trendleri
takip etmiyor, onları şekillendirmeyi tercih
ediyoruz.
herkesin fikrini almaktan mutluluk duyuyoruz.
Fakat trendlerin
küreselleşmeye devam etmesi, stillerimizin çoğunu
Benelüks, Almanya, Fransa ve diğer bölgelerdeki evler
için mükemmel hale getirmek adına yeterli ilgi düzeyi
olduğunu gösterdi. Splinter ve Blossom gibi halılardaki
İngiliz tasarımının gücü, markamızın çekiciliğini daha
da arttırmaya ve güçlendirmeye yardımcı oluyor. Bölge
genelinde ilişkilerin başlamasını dört gözle bekliyoruz.
Olağanüstü halı tasarımları için mükemmel görsel
zemin sağlayan stantla Domotex’te yepyeni bir görünüm
sunuyoruz. Söylemek istediğimiz ana şeyler kesinlikle
use our experience
to blend materials
and design in a way
that delivers exciting
Founded in 1984,
Flair Rugs is the
world. We did an
interview with
Sinead Donohoe,
Flair Rugs, Head
of Marketing, during the world’s biggest flooring exhibition,
Domotex Hannover, Germany.
Firstly, could you give us some information about yourself
and Flair Rugs?
At Flair we are passionate about rugs, not content to follow
trends, we help shape them. From cutting edge contemporary
rugs to more traditional designs and in many textures, colours
and qualities, we use our experience to blend materials and
design in a way that delivers exciting and inspiring rugs. As a
family run business since the very beginning, our dedicated
team pride themselves on providing a service second to none
and constantly strive to deliver the values the business was
founded on over 30 years ago.
Is there any carpet manufacturer in England?
We don’t manufacture in England ourselves. Our products are
made in Belgium, Turkey, China and India. We import them, we
hold them in England. And we
distribute them to shops around
England and in various Export
markets.
What is relations of English
people with carpet?
In England, it was actually
a bit more common to have
full carpet, wall to wall. Now
increasingly people have wooden
floor, concrete flooring all of
these things are emerging as
new trends in the interiors
industry. We are seeing
particularly increases in a large of sizes rugs which shows to
us the people are wanting a carpeted feel in the room without
wall-to-wall carpet they want to see modern, esthetic, beautiful
floor board beautiful slate floor with it makes something
fabulous on top. So walls are not necessarily as popular as on
the continent, it is becoming much more popular in England
this time goes on. Also in England it’s quite common people to
put a rug on the top of the wall-to-wall carpet. Particularly in
colder areas.
Some of our designs are created in our head office, in England.
Some we are working with are designers in our factory. Some
are making collaboration so for example our Inspired by the
V&A range. We work with huge museum of design we work with
archivist, librarians of things of museum. We select patterns
with them and we work with them to produce the rug. We take
piece of textiles, material, we take design and making the
rug. In terms of inspiration we look everywhere and around
shows like Domotex, we also look at graphics that we see on
wallpapers, curtain fabrics and table cloths anything we see
can be part of inspiration products.
What about your exports?
Obviously Europe is key because they are closest neighbors
regardless of Brexit. We still feel very connected to Europe. We
do a lot in around Europe. We want to expand export area, we
are already very beginning in the UK. We would probably aim
to become stronger in the export market we existing currently
before we tackle America.
What about Domotex Hannover 2019?
Europe represents a fantastic opportunity for us and Domotex
is a key platform. Our ranges have been developed with UK
homes in mind, but the continued globalisation of trends
means there is a good degree of relevance to make many of our
styles just as perfect for homes in the Benelux, Germany, France
and further afield. The strength of British design in rugs such
as Splinter and Blossom helps to differentiate and strengthen
our brand’s appeal yet further and we look forward to beginning
relationships across the region. We present a new look for the
brand at Domotex, with a
clean and contemporary
feel for the stand that
provides the perfect
visual backdrop for
extraordinary rug designs.
Main things we wanted
to say we will definitely
continue coming to
Domotex. We meet new
people to contact with.
We are happy to show
some our new products
Hollanda ve Katar’da yoğun
bir proje takvimi olan Art
Design markası ülke sınırlarını
aşmakla kalmıyor, tasarımları
ile modadaki kalıpları da
yıkıyor.
Contract projelerde tasarım yapılan mekânın ruhu ve yaydığı
atmosferden hareketle mekâna yeni bir kimlik kazandırmak
amaçlanır. Art Design mekânın yaydığı enerjiyi baz alarak,
tasarımların ile ahenk ve uyum yakalamaya odaklanıyor. Böylece
‘moda’ kalıbını kırarak daha özgür tasarımlara imza atmaktan
korkmuyor.
Dekorasyon
ve tasarım dünyasının parametrelerini çözen, tasarım kadar
kullanılan aksesuarların da önemli olduğunu savunan markanın
yeni projelerini Art Design Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı Turgay
Terzi’den dinledik. İstanbul’un her iki yakasında yeni showroom
açmaya hazırlandıklarını belirten Terzi, Art Design’ın özel
tasarımlarda öne çıkan bir marka olduğuna dikkat çekiyor.
2018 yılında öne çıkan desen ve modeller nelerdi?
2018 öncesinde dekorasyonun tekstil kısmında kullanılan
geometrik desenlerle hareketlilik sağlanıyordu. Şimdi oradaki
yavaşlamayla birlikte farklı malzemelere ve el işçiliğine ağırlık
verildi. Aynalar daha sık kullanılmaya başlamakla birlikte
dekorasyon ürünlerinin içerisine entegre edildi. Daha çok
malzemeyle tasarım güçlendiriliyor. Bu durum sadece ana
unsurlar değil aksesuarlar için de geçerli. Daha yoğun bir
aksesuar kullanımı söz konusu. Tekstil sektörü de bu değişimi
sade renkler ve tasarımlarla tamamlıyor.
“
2019 koleksiyonunda en sık
göreceğimiz renkler hangileri?
2019 yılında belli bir rengin baskın
olması gibi bir durumun söz konusu
olacağını düşünmüyoruz. Son yıllarda
bence şöyle bir durum oluştu;
modanın dışında insanlar çok özgür
davranmak istiyorlar. Son 2-3 yıldır
bu akım biraz daha ivme yakaladı.
Önceki dönemlerde moda olan renklere
yönelim oluyordu. Mesela 2018 yılında
mor renk çok kullanıldı. Fakat 2019
Çünkü yaptığımız her projenin sonunda
insanlar mekânı görüyorlar ve oradaki memnuniyet veya
memnuniyetsizlik durumu direkt olarak bize yansıyor. Bu sebeple
insanların bulunduğu mekânın içerisinde artı ve eksi gördüğü
değerlerin farkındayız. Tüm projelerde hem tasarımsal hem de
ergonomik açıdan destek veriyoruz.
Hangi ülkelerde aktifsiniz? Şu an devam eden yurtdışı
nedir?
Her bölgenin kendi kültürel yapısıyla beraber
çok büyük değişiklikler gösteriyor. Belirtmek
isterim ki bu kültürel farklılıklarda yavaş yavaş
makas kapanmaya başladı. Eskiden bizim Arap
yarımadasında Suudi Arabistan’da Katar’da
Birleşik Arap Emirlikleri’nde yaptığımız bir
projeyle Avrupa veya Türkiye’de yaptığımız
projeler arasında uçurumlar vardı. Şimdi
burada insanlar genel akıma çok çabuk
ulaştığı ve birbirinden çok kolay etkilendiği
için buradaki makas biraz kapanmaya başladı.
Önceden Arap bölgesindeki projelerin %99’u
çok ağır klasikken şimdiki ortalamada daha
çok modern evler yapıyoruz. Bina yapıları
daha klasik bir doku barındırıyor ama
iç dekorasyonda bizden çok daha rahat
kullanabileceği, rahat yaşayabileceği modern
evler isteyebiliyorlar.
Renklerde biraz
daha özgür çalışabilirler, ev küçük diye illa açık renklere
bağlı kalmak zorunda değiller. Önemli olan tercihlerin
mekânla uyuşması ve parça sayısını azaltarak işlevselliği
artırabilmektir. Böylece daha rahat ve daha yaşanabilir
alanlar oluşturulabilir.
Eskiden konsol olmayan bir yemek odası olmazdı. Artık
birçok eve özel TV üniteleri yaparak eşya ve takımlarını
koyabilecekleri işlevsel bir ürün sunuyoruz. Ürün tasarım
olarak da çok beğeniliyor. Duvarlarda kullanılan aksesuarlar
artık daha önemli. Eskiden şöyle düşünülürdü; “duvarda bir
tablo veya aynayla iş biter.” Artık bu iş biraz daha detaylı
hale geldi. Şimdilerde duvarlarda eskisi gibi tekdüze renkler
kullanılmıyor. Farklı renkler deneniyor. Bu da tasarım
kalitesini artıran bir unsur.
Büyük evlerde iş daha kolay, büyük metrekare dediğimiz
zaman yükseklikle bağlantılı olarak tasarım mantalitesi
çok değişebiliyor. Eğer yüksek bir alandan bahsediyorsak
o alanda kaybolmayacak, kendini ifade edebilecek ürünler
kullanmak gerekiyor. Yani alanın büyüklüğüyle beraber
yüksekliği de çok önemli bir değer. O yüzden onlara dikkat
edilmesi gerekiyor.
Şu an sadece Anadolu
Biz şu an birçok bölgeye
talepte bulunuyorlar. Kısacası talep eden değil, talep gören
bir firmayız.
Sizin eklemek istediğiniz bir konu var mı?
Mobilya sektöründe KDV konusunun çözülmesi gerekiyor.
Şu an %8 oranına düşen KDV’nin artık sürekli öyle olması
Bunu
sektörün her aşamasında iç mimardan tasarımcıya, montaj
gelebilecek potansiyelimiz var. Şu an olmamız gereken
seviyenin biraz altındayız ama ilerleyen zamanlarda çok
farklı noktalara gelecektir.
An intense project schedule in the Netherlands and Qatar, the Art Design brand not only
surpasses the borders of the country, but also demolishes the ordinary trends in fashion with
its designs.
In contracted projects, it is being aimed to give a new identity to
the space based on the spirit of the place and the atmosphere
it emitted. Art Design is focusing on the harmony and concord
of the designs based on the energy emitted by the space.
Thus, it is not afraid of breaking more cliché “fashion” designs
and putting it signature more freely. In the projects they have
implemented so far, it is a fact that the unique design ability
that breaks the clichés lies behind this much admiration. The
success of Art Design, which creates living and soul-free spaces
without ignoring the expectations, reaches beyond the borders
of the country and reaches to the Middle East and Europe today.
We have listened the new designs of the brand, which solves
the parameters of the world of decoration and design, and also
their accessories which are used as much as their designs, from
Art Design Chairman Mr Turgay Terzi. Stating that they are being
prepared to open a new showroom on both sides of Istanbul,
Terzi points out that Art Design is a prominent brand in special
designs.
What were the prominent designs and models in 2018?
Before 2018, the geometric patterns used in the textile part of
the decoration provided dynamism. Now, with the slowdown
there, we focused on different materials and hand work. Mirrors
are being used more frequently but are now being integrated
into the decoration products. Designs are being enhanced with
more materials. This applies not only to main components but
also to accessories. There is more intensive use of accessories.
The textile sector is also completing this change with simple
colours and designs as well.
Which colours are most common in 2019 collection?
In 2019, we do not think that a certain colour will be dominant.
In recent years, I think the situation has occurred in a different
way; beyond the fashion, people want to be free from now on.
For the last two to three years this movement has caught some
more momentum. In previous periods, the trend towards the
colours was fashion. For example, in 2018, purple colour was
used a lot. But we do not have such a determination in 2019.
Instead, the colour with which the design looks good, area in
which the colour is better shown topics have priority nowadays.
Beyond the movement, more freely, the most accurate colours
related to the product and design are being used. This is the
case, so we do not have any concerns about the 2019 fashions in
any of our new designs and we are acting completely free. We
are in favour of a free fashion approach in which we can reflect
harmony and spirit in designs and break clichés.
Can you give us a few examples of the Contracted projects
you have done?
There are concept projects and sample apartments which we
have realized. In these projects, our target audience is the
top segment who are preferring to give importance to design.
This also gave us a chance to create a unique line. This may
sometimes be on the basis of product and sometimes on the
basis of consultancy. We are in direct contact with the end
consumer with the consultancy service we provide beside our
manufacturer identity. So we know very well what the consumer
wants and what makes them happy. Because at the end of every
project we do, people see the emptiness and the situation of
satisfaction or dissatisfaction there directly reflects to us.
78 DECOR • March - April 2019
For this reason, we are aware of the values that people see as
plus and minus in the spaces. We provide support for all projects
both in design and ergonomics.
Which countries are you active in? Do you have any ongoing
overseas projects?
We have special projects in many regions. Periodically we are
having projects in different regions. For example, we have an
intensive project calendar in the Netherlands and Qatar for the
next two months. For this reason, we are currently focusing on
these two regions, but this may also be the case in the Turkic
Republics or any other country in Europe. Since we continue
according to our projects, it can change according to the density
of the current project. But in general, we have been working
extensively in the Arabian Peninsula, Turkic Republics and
Europe.
What is your comment on the consumption habits in the
domestic market and in the countries you are in?
Each region shows great changes with its cultural structure. I
would like to point out that these cultural differences gradually
began to close. In old times, there were huge differences
between our projects that we have done in Arabian Peninsula
and Turkey and Europe. For example our projects that we had
realized in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates
were very different what we have done in Turkey and Europe.
Now the people here quickly reach the general flow and are very
easily affected by each other, correspondingly the difference
between the movements are getting reduced. While 99% of the
projects in the Arab region are very heavy classic, we are making
more modern houses in the current average. The building
structures have a more classic texture, but in interior decoration,
they have begun to request modern houses where they can live
more comfortably and use them more comfortably. Therefore,
the gap between the differences is decreasing, but in general,
the influence of cultural structures in the Arabian Peninsula
more classic, in Europe more minimal and ergonomic products
in the foreground. The functionality due to the shrinkage of the
square in Turkey recently gained a little bit more attention. With
the design, the ergonomics and functionality of the products is
desired to be more. In the past, a space solved by 3 unit items is
now being tried to be solved with 2 units. This way, you will have
to install more functionality on an item.
Do you have any decoration recommendations for big and
small houses?
Working in small houses is a little more difficult actually.
What people need to do is determine the needs of the house.
One of the most important factors in a house is the ratio of
light. They can work a little more freely in colours, they don’t
necessarily have to be tied to light colours since the house is
small. The important thing is to match the preferences of the
place and reduce the number of parts but by increasing their
functionalities. Thus, more comfortable and more liveable areas
can be created. It wouldn’t be a dining room without a console
in the old days. Now, we offer a functional product that can be
used to set up products and sets by making special TV units. The
product is also very popular in design. The accessories used on
the walls are now more important. In the old days, it used to be
thought such; “work ends with a painting or mirror on the wall”.
Now, this has become a bit more detailed. Nowadays, uniform
colours are not being used on the walls. Trying different colours.
This is an element that improves the design quality as well.
In large houses, to work and to create is certainly easier it is.
When we talk about large square meters, the design logic can
also change a lot in relation to the height. If we are talking
about a high area, we need to use products that will not be
lost in the field, and need to use products that would express
yourself. So the height of the area is also a very important value
for a proper designing. So we need to pay attention to these
information accordingly.
How did you close the year 2018 numerically?
It cannot be said that 2018 is very good for our sector. However,
we have achieved the goals we set within Art Design. Even
though there were slight decreases in the domestic market,
export figures were above our expectations. However, we have
achieved a balance.
+How many regions do you work in the domestic market?+
Since we are an architectural company, we don’t have much
need to have more branch offices. We are only on the Anatolian
side at the moment. In 2019, we will open two new showrooms
on the European side and on the Anatolian side. In the following
process, we will focus on our work rather than branching. We
do boutique jobs, which is not a very easy task to be done in
many points at the same time. We do not need to have many
points for custom designs. We are currently exporting to many
regions but none of them have showrooms. People have come
to us because they have identified us as the right point. In short,
we are not a company who demands, we are the one who is
demanded.
Is there any other topic that you would like to add?
In the furniture sector, the VAT issue needs to be resolved. We
now have a demand that the VAT, which is currently falling to
8%, should be continuous. Apart from that, companies need to
do some more work to raise and educate people. Instead of using
qualified manpower, we have to do something more in order to
produce it, because it does not look very bright after 20-25 years
because it is the opposite at the moment. This is very much
related with the financial strength. Each company may not be able
to put their hands under this stone, but at least the companies
who has a chance, should make an investment on this issue.
There are deficiencies in every aspect of the sector, from interior
architect to designer, from assembly to master. Here, companies
should pay more attention to this issue. As long as the high valueadded
products are being produced, the furniture industry will
develop in Turkey. We have the potential to come to a good point
in the world because of our geographic location and our ability in
craftsmanship. We’re a little below the level we should be right
now, but it will come to many different points in the future.
Bahreyn’deki
müşterilerin de en dikkat ettiği şey kalitedir. Bu pazarda
tutunabilmemizin en önemli nedeni kaliteli ürünler sunuyor
olmamız.
80 DECOR • March - April 2019
Yüksek kalitedeki ürünlerimiz o bölgeye göre uygun fiyatlarda
satılıyor. Fiyatları arttırmıyoruz çünkü amacımız kalite ve doğru
fiyatı buluşturarak iyi siparişler alabilmek.
Togo’daki projeden bahseder misiniz?
Biz projeyle
alakalı firmaya sunumlarımızı yaptık ve fiyatlarımızı verdik.
Sonuçları bekliyoruz, her şey olumlu ilerliyor.
verecek alternatiflerimiz mevcut. Bir hastane ziyaretimde fark
ettim ki ziyaretçi koltuğunun kılıfı kirden simsiyah olmuş.
Bizimkinin yıkanabilir ve değiştirilebilir kılıf
avantajı var. Yatak olabilen koltuklarımızın
da bu hususta iyi bir alternatif olacağını
düşünüyorum.
Değiştirilebilir kılıf fikri nasıl ortaya çıktı?
İnsanlar mobilya alıyorlar ve uzun süre
değiştirmiyorlar fakat sıkılıyorlar. Bizim
amacımız o sıkılganlığı ortadan kaldırmak
ve insanların hayatlarına renk katmak. Ufak
değişikliklerle evin dekorasyonunda büyük
değişiklikler sağlamalarına imkan vermek.
Marka ismimizin anlamı da bukalemundan
geliyor; her yere kendini adapte edebilen,
değişebilen, uyum sağlayabilen demek.
Buka’nın ismi Los Angeles’ta Hollywood
filmlerine afiş tasarlayan bir reklam
ajansı tarafından oluşturuldu. Bukalemun
maskotumuz da Meksika’da tasarlandı.
Markanın kuruluşundan bu yana çok emek
verdik ve her bir detayı titizlikle oluşturduk.
5 sene içerisinde Türkiye’nin en iyi mobilya
markası olacağımızı düşünüyorum. Kalite
olarak şu anda zaten oradayız fakat satış
rakamlarında hedeflediğimiz noktaya
gelebilmek adına 5 senelik bir süreç var.
Buka’yı son zamanlarda birçok alanda görmeye başladık.
Halı, aydınlatma, mobilya… Bu noktadaki büyüme hakkında
neler söylemek istersiniz?
Mobilyayı alan kişi aksesuarını da alıyor. Yani aslına bakarsanız
insanlar evine bir sehpa alırken sehpanın üzerine koyacağı
objeyi de almak istiyor. Yatak odası alırken avize de almak
istiyor.
Hedefimiz tamamen bizim koltuk modellerimize uyum
sağlayan aksesuar ve diğer detayları sunabilmek. Bu
noktada da bizim ürettiğimiz mobilyanın kalitesini
yansıtacak ürünlerin bulunması, kombinlenmesi ve fiyat
olarak da bütünlük sağlaması adına yoğun araştırmalarımız
var.
Eklemek istediğiniz bir konu var mı?
2018 ülkemiz için zor bir yıl oldu. 2019’un hepimiz için
sağlıklı ve başarılı bir yıl olmasını umuyorum. Amacımız
insanlara farkındalığı hissettirebilmek; farklı, güzel
ve kaliteli aksesuarlar içerisinde kaliteli bir yaşam
sağlayabilmek. Her şeyi değiştirebiliriz fakat ödün
vermediğimiz tek nokta kalitemiz.
Consider with the “Buka’s point of view”
your furniture which forms the skeleton of the
house and which has also a long life. Buka
offers the possibility of renewing the appearance
of the spaces with replaceable slipcovers and
makes the fashion accessible with minimum effort.
The founder of Buka Sofa, Mr Suat Erdoğan who started his
working life in 1990 and continued his professional life in
various places until 2001, then has contacted the Swedish
furniture giant and established Ongan Tekstil. Erdoğan who
has indicated that they have started out with 14 machines
and 25 people only, in a short period of time as 5-6 years,
said they have taken part among the top 500 export
companies in Turkey. Erdoğan who also indicated that
currently they have a team of 1000 people including 550
people in his factory in Moldova and 450 people in Ongan
Textile, said that this large team exports to the world
furniture giant.
Erdoğan who expressed that they have discovered the
idea of replaceable slipcover in 2011, said they decided to
implement this idea in 2013 at all. Erdoğan, who explained
that they provide the opportunity to follow the fashion
more closely with the replaceable slipcovers that renew the
home decoration in the furniture that has a long-lasting
use, stated that they had created a new team and prepared
the collection and thus the brand of Buka was born in 2014
accordingly.
We talked about the timelessness of fashion and their new
projects with the founder of Buka, Suat Erdoğan, who gave
an innovative perspective to the furniture industry.
How was the year 2018? What are your 2019 goals along
with this direction?
Our target in 2018 was growing in the domestic market,
but the crisis in the construction sector led us to export.
In the Netherlands and Switzerland, we have two potential
customers, where we are now in the order phase. We have
also a big client in Ghana. Apart from that, there is a very
big project in Togo. Our negotiations on this continue at
the moment. Our goal for 2019 is to continue our growth
in the foreign market. According to the economic situation
in the domestic market, we are aiming for a growth in our
Istanbul-based stores.
What
is the
number of
stores you
have abroad?
What kind of
growth do you
foresee at this
point?
Our first goal is now
10 million euros. Abroad
purchases are corner
and project based. Abroad,
the system usually works as
follows; There are wholesalers,
they like some of your certain
products. After they like, they start
to buy 1 or 2 containers per month.
We plan to develop in about 6-7
different locations, especially in Europe,
the Middle East and Africa. In the next step,
we are planning to enter the Russian market
with Mebel Moscow Fair. It is very attractive for
us that there is a great potential in the market
where they prefer quality products.
Quality is the most important thing that customers
take care in Bahrain. The most important reason for
us to provide our sustainability in this market is that
we offer quality products. Our high quality products are
being sold with an affordable prices. We are not increasing
the prices because our aim is to get good orders by bringing
quality and right price together.
Can you tell us about the project in Togo? How is
Buka going to be involved in this project?
It is a project that is large enough to fill 6-8 months
of our capacity. Due to the capacity of the project,
the World Development Bank and the African
Regional Development Bank are involved it the
project.
A project which is being developed in order
to ensure settlement, development and
improvement in the region. We can call it an
urban transformation project in the name
of urbanization and modernization. There
are supports provided to the region for
this issue. The company that has gained
the right to get this support wants to
buy the furniture that will be used
within the project from us. We made
presentations about the project and
gave our prices.
We expect results, everything
is progressing positively at the
moment.
Have you ever been involved
in such a contract project?
We took part in the contract
projects in the domestic
market. All of the seats in
the lobby of the central
building of Aliağa
Socar in Izmir were
supplied from us.
We have provided
the Four Seasons’
bistro tables in
the Bosphorus
and the resting
seats of the
administration
section.
We also have other projects continuing with Four Seasons.
In 2019, we have five-star hotel and hospital projects. We
have alternatives that will provide good service in the
companion seats at the hospital rooms. When I visited
a hospital, I noticed that the seat of the companion was
blackened from dirt.
Ours has the advantage of washable and replaceable
slipcovers. I think that our seats, which can be
transformed into bed, will be a good alternative in this
regard.
How did the idea of replaceable slipcovers come
about?
People buy furniture and don’t change them for a long
time, but they get bored. Our aim is to eliminate that
disembarrass and add colour to people’s lives. One of our
aims is to give an opportunity for the large changes with
small touches in the decoration of a house. The meaning
of our brand name comes from the chameleon. It means
it can adapted itself to everywhere, it can accommodate
itself easily, and it can orient itself to any place. Buka’s
name was created in Los Angeles by an advertising
agency that is being designed posters for Hollywood films.
Our chameleon mascot was designed in Mexico. We have
worked very hard since the foundation of the brand and
we have carefully created every detail. I think we will be
the best furniture manufacturer within 5 years in Turkey.
We are already here for quality but there is a 5-year
process in order to reach our target in our sales figures.
We have recently started to see Buka in many fields.
Carpet, lighting, furniture... What would you like to
say about your growth at this point?
The person who gets the furniture, gets also the
accessories as well. So, in fact, while people buying a
coffee table, they also want to buy an artefact that they
are going to use it on that coffee table. He wants to buy a
chandelier when he buys a bedroom furniture. That’s why,
we set out on a road because of these reasons at all.
In 2019, we will form a special team on this issue. Our
goal is to provide accessories and other details that fully
adapt to our seat models. At this point, we have intensive
research in order to find the products that will reflect the
quality of the furniture we produce and to ensure the
combination as well as the price.
Is there a topic you’d like to add?
2018 was a difficult year for our country. I hope 2019 will
be a healthy and successful year for all of us. Our aim is
to make people feel the awareness; to provide a quality
life in a different, beautiful and quality accessories.
We can change everything, but the only point we don’t
compromise is our quality.
From 11 to 14 January 2019, DOMOTEX – the world’s
leading tradeshow for carpets and floor coverings –
returned as the industry’s international trends showcase.
This year’s theme of “CREATE’N’CONNECT” put the
spotlight on digitization and creative connectivity
across all aspects of floor design, forming a leitmotif
for the entire event. The “Framing Trends” special
showcase featured stunning presentations, innovative
product displays and an exciting supporting program,
creating a lively hot spot that was particularly
appreciated by visitors with a lifestyle focus.
“The floor sets the stage for any interior,” says internationally
renowned designer Sebastian Herkner, highlighting the vital
connective function of carpets and floor coverings within the
overall design concept. “Along with walls, floors define the context
and basis of interior design. The choice of floor material affects
how we live and communicate in the resulting interior space.”
As a presenter at the Framing Trends speaker’s forum, Herkner
addressed the lead theme of connectivity operating at the
interfaces of architecture, interior design and design.
Framing Trends – a special showcase at DOMOTEX 2019 devoted to
all aspects of the CREATE’N’CONNECT lead theme – served as the
creative hot spot for the overall event. It provided the main forum
for presentations and debates on the megatrend of connectivity
and was a standout attraction for architects, interior designers
and influencers, among others. It consisted of the following three
modules: “Flooring Spaces”, devoted to presentations of innovative
products; “NuThinkers”, featuring a selection of university design
projects; and the highly original art installations featured in the
“Art & Interaction” space.
Flooring Spaces presentations on the CREATE’N’CONNECT lead
theme
One of the central attractions at DOMOTEX 2019 consisted of
the the “Wood Lifecycle” flooring space, a project created and
designed by Total Tool Milano, featuring a “lifecycle” of wood in
seven distinct steps – from the tree growing in the forest to the
recycled product which completes and closes the cycle at the other
end. Every point on the cycle of this connective display featured
products from a leading Italian company. A special “connectivity
wheel” from the Schmidhuber company, made up of colored glass
facets, invited tradeshow visitors to enter the wheel and set it
in motion with their footsteps, thus generating multi-colored
light reflections on the surrounding floor coverings provided by
Carpet Concept, for a unique visitor experience. This technique of
highlighting the connections and interactions between light and
86 DECOR • March - April 2019
materials also promoted social connections and interactions in
the form of selfies. Again within the context of the lead theme,
Fletco Carpets, in partnership with its customers, created a
special floor of digitally printed carpet tiles and a carpet mat.
Most of the floor surface was printed with a precisely defined
pattern to form a clear contrast with the pixelated outer zone.
This was continued on the walls, illustrating the almost limitless
possibilities of digital printing technology for the development of
brand identities, exemplified by creatively coordinated wall and
floor products. In another exhibition space, Visionme, a young,
Hannover-based company, presented “IUNCO”, a package of
innovative visualization technologies and distribution channels
for the floor covering industry. The “Virtual Showroom” offered
a comprehensive display of virtual reality technology, while the
“Product Catalogue” devoted itself to augmented reality and AI.
An AI smartphone app enabled DOMOTEX attendees to substitute
virtual floors for the real thing and experience the visual and
spatial effects. The multi-platform IUNCO visualization technology
allows the user to emotively connect real and virtual worlds.
Creative interaction and environmentally focused design
projects
Another outstanding attraction involved audience-participation
design projects offered by the NuThinkers from the University
of Wismar. In “A Match!” two physically separated individuals
attempted to swing in sync. The parallel swinging movements
were displayed in the form of superimposed curves on a video
display. The participants were able to send each other snapshots
of this using an app, thereby connecting with the outside world.
The second student project, “Connect it3”, was based on triangular
modules covered with glued-on carpet materials which, over the
four days of the fair, visitors were invited to reconstitute into everchanging
three-dimensional floor shapes.
In the “Art & Interaction” space, the artist Rena Detrixhe laid
reddish sand taken from the American state of Oklahoma as a
temporary carpet. To create this “Red Dirt Rug”, she began by
sifting the soil into a fine sludge, which she then smoothed out
into an even layer. The Portuguese artist Vanessa Barragão used
her frame to display handmade underwater worlds created from a
highly original network of recycled materials. The work portrays a
coral reef, contrasting bright colors which stand for “bygone days”
with a colorless “extinct” scenery representing what is happening
now.
Connected floor design as a source of inspiration for
exhibitors
The lead theme of connectivity and the digitization trend
were emphasized in many of the products and services from
innovative manufacturers and brands, linked closely to themes like
individualization, naturalness, and sustainability.
Specialized visualization software and data management
solutions for the floor covering industry were the main focus of
the joint exhibit by ESIGN Software and active online. ESIGN’s
modular “Interior Studio Platform 3.5” exhibited the prototype
of its new AI tool, while active online presented AR and VR tools
and new functions of “materialo” for the automated transfer of
product data for websites or online shops. Leap Tools from Toronto
displayed its “RoomVo” visualization technology, a tool which
allows users to upload their interior space photographs directly to
the website of a manufacturer or supplier – no app required – and
simulate the look of selected carpet tiles, wood planks or design
floor coverings.
Brilliant effects, the used look and geometric carpets
Displays included metallic yarns in finely serrated patterns or
expansive structures, primarily for resilient and textile floor
surfaces (Hellsten Flooring, “Tuuli Salsa Metallic”, Tapibel,
the extended “Metal-X-Urban” collection). Also on show were
products with a more understated sheen, for example in superior
quality carpets such as “Ghom Copper” from Hossein Rezvani,
“Reflections” from Art Resources and “Argent” from Choudhary
Exports. New wool carpet collections from Creative Matters
such as “Veil” featured silver-gray tones. Gray was featured as
a trend color for superior quality products at numerous stands.
“Super Smooth on Red Denim” by Rug Star attracted considerable
attention with its tufted rayon surface, with the red cotton
material of the carpet base showing through at an open point
in the design. “Dazzie” from Saraswatii Global is a masterpiece
of the knotter’s art, with a fine, irregular three-dimensional silk
surface structure, particularly impressive in “Dark Grey”. Much in
demand along with these examples of outstanding design was
the equally exclusive “used look” in textile floor coverings, woven
carpets and hand-woven carpets (De Poortere, Stefany Home &
Living, Hossein Rezvani). Wool and silk handcrafted carpets and
superior-quality woven carpets with colored geometrical or graphic
patterns and strong black-white contrasts also had strong appeal
(Claire Gaudion, Osta Carpets, Jaipur Rugs, Hanse Home Collection,
Zollanvari). Flair Flooring displayed the results of its partnership
with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The striking zigzag
design of “Salon” is a magnified detail of an art deco carpet
contained in the V&A collection. Prado Rugs, a manufacturer
and exporter of machine-made carpets from Egypt, delighted
tradeshow visitors with its high-quality wool carpets following
the patented design principles of “BioGeometry”. According to
this principle, geometric patterns with special circles, angles,
and waveform patterns are thought to create harmonizing and
therapeutic effects by activating especially positive energies in
the environment and our bodies.
Prizewinning exhibits in the Carpet Design Awards 2019
On Saturday evening came the much-anticipated announcement
of the winners of the Carpet Design Awards 2019 given in
recognition of outstanding combinations of quality, design and
innovation. The Best Studio Artist Design award went to “Create
& Connect: The Chameleon Carpet” from the Beate von Harten
studio. The jury praised “the idea of literally getting lost in the
multiple fabric layers.” Edelgrund won two awards, for “Bijar” (Best
Flatweave Design) and Best Communication for its advertising
campaign. Two awards also went to Wool & Silk (“Happiness” /
Best Collection, and “Reggae” / Best Modern Design Deluxe). The
winner of the CDA for Best Modern Design Superior was “Spartan
Plumage” by Zollanvari International. The Berlin trend label
Rug Star was the winner in the Best Traditional-Modern Design
category with “Balouch LightPink”. It also won the Best Interior
Installation award, for its “Magnificent Old-Portland Style House”,
a photo project realized in the USA. The jury experts stated that
“the new and old world come together in this exciting interior
interpretation,” viewing it as an outstanding example of how
carpets can transform an interior.
