product with so much history and heritage it’s important
also when you have a new thing it needs to be seen
where it comes from so the heritage also in contemporary
carpets for me is very important.
What does mean “carpet” for Hossein Rezvani?
Because I’m an Iranian, like a Turkish of course also we all
have a very strong bond to carpets is it the Turkish carpet
the Persian we all have grown.
Old carpets are in your house in my house, for our parents
and grandparents carpets always have been around so its
more less in our blood today carpets to me means a home,
it means good memory, childhood memory all these things
come to my mind when I think about carpets.
What so special about your carpets?
I put a modern spin on traditional Persian patterns – and
prioritize outstanding quality. Our carpets start at 400,000
knots per square meter. They are the finest in the world, as
we have models with one million knots per square meter.
Of later we’ve been working with undyed sheep’s wool,
knotted direct off the sheep as it were. The carpet is called
‘Sahar’, belonging to ‘Sahara’. Just imagine the wind were
blowing on the fringe of the desert and exposes stony
sections – such as on this carpet here.
What is the trends for two thousand nineteen in the
world in your collection?
I am actually not a big fan of trends I don’t believe
in trends but I believe in timeless pieces, I believe in
timeless design because again for carpets you going to
put on the ground, you’re
going to hopefully live
with them you don’t
want to throw away at
ten thousand euro after
years so I think it’s more
about creating something
which is timeless of
course I love turquoise
color, gray colors, I always
have of course a little
bit of modern colors in
my collection this year,
we have a lot of gray,
turquois, greenish color
is that is very trendy
at the moment but my
main goal is to create
something which is
timeless.
We only have a hundred
percent hand knotted a
carpet only made in Iran.
What about export?
We actually export everywhere worldwide beside USA.
We export our carpets to many countries from Canada to
Australia, Japan, China and Middle East. We used to do
export to Turkey a lot but import tax now is very high. We
used to do a lot of business with Recep Sefer who has 7
shops, it has floor full of carpet in Grand Pazar, Istanbul.
Do you have any history for example in manufacturing?
A lot of people ask me why has nobody done Persian
contemporary carpet before me so I said well, I tell you
story for example when I started I thought it’s easy but
the problem with the Iranian weaver’s was because they’re
used to traditional designs like nain, moon, taboo. Every
city has its own design.
So when we went to Isfahan, we said to weaver please can
you we have a design, can you make it. We gave a sample
and the sample was blue and red. After four weeks we
went to Isfahan again suddenly. The sample was green
and yellow and then the weaver said to me but this looks
much better you have no idea, so this was the mentality of
the Iranian weaver the Iranian weaver said I know better
than you. This was one of the biggest challenges we had
to find the weaver who listen to us. Iranian carpet quality
wise is you will never find anything better. This was a
major because Iranian they’re very proud, they’re proud
of what they do with their product they design. It is to
break with these traditions was actually with the biggest
challenge I was facing. Thank you very much thank you for
passing by.
