It’s a friendly postcard pretty California hamlet with downtown streets lined in the company of quaint delicious Danish bakeries and appealing boutiques. It is the sort of place where time seems to have stopped. The name Solvang is Danish for “sunny field.” Solvang is clean and well-kept with plenty of sky overhead. Indeed, it is Solvang - Town with a Danish Flair much like visiting a lifesize miniature village. The streets are lined with old-world Danish architecture. Even the United States post office façade mirrors the traditional Danish style. In a public park near the town’s center sits a statue featuring the bust of famed Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Located in the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Barbara County, Solvang’s natural surroundings of canyons and mountains are heart-stopping superb; especially in springtime when green signs of spring can be glimpsed on the surrounding fields and hillsides. The town was founded in 1911 by a group of Danes who arrived to establish a Danish community far from harsh mid-western America winters and wanting to establish a religious and education community for fellow Danes. It was their “Eureka!” which means “I have found it!” a word from Gold Rush days that became the official motto of California in 1963. The early 20 th century was a period when thousands of Danes were leaving everything they knew to immigrate elsewhere. Between 1850 and 1930, Denmark experienced an impoverished economy. Danes, in search of a better life, decided to leave. Some estimates put the number departing as high as one in ten Danes, many choosing America to start their new life. Today, Solvang’s population hovers between 5,000 and 6,000. An overheard wise guy’s question, “How do you drive to Denmark?” Well, head for California’s little Denmark in Solvang - a town most certainly with a Danish flair and worth a visit.
