Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group A SHORT WALK TO WELCOME IN SPRING There is no better incentive than to get out into the countryside now that Spring has arrived. An easy circular walk around Lower Ogden and Hough Fold is recommended. To get to the starting point, hop on the No 451 or 462 bus that travels through Milnrow and Newhey Villages and terminates at Peppermint Bridge. The walk can be muddy and therefore slippy in places; there is also a moderate inclined stretch, and a stile to negotiate, so wear good walking boots or shoes, and clothing suitable for the weather conditions. A walking pole and mobile phone are worth taking. The Route From the bus terminus cross over and proceed up A640 Huddersfield Road with the Piethorne Brook on your left. Go beyond the entrance to Woodside then take the next footpath, left, (signposted) over the bridge spanning the brook. Follow the stone sett footpath through the wooded glade and along by the brook with the Piethorne Valley Camping Site over to the right. Look out for Dippers and Grey Heron along the brook and two waterfalls, before the path emerges onto Rough Bank Lane opposite P W Greenhalgh Works. Proceed left up to the stone sett lane. (signposted Bridleway). This is a steep inclined section so take your time and be aware of possible vehicular traffic. As the lane bears left, take the junction right, along the stone sett path that leads to Ogden Reservoir. Proceed over a stile, then right through a gap in the wall and down a narrow steep path that leads onto the reservoir banking. Here is a good view of the reservoir with the tree plantation and hills beyond. A suitable photo location. Proceed along the reservoir bank, down the steps at the end; turn right along Ogden Lane, past Foulwater Lodge, and the Burial Ground. Our walk continues right down Ogden Lane, past P W Greenhalgh Works, to the junction with the A640 Huddersfield Road. Look out for a Stone Circle over the wall to your right. At this junction take great care crossing Huddersfield Road because of the blind bend in the road, and go down Bethany Lane, an ancient highway. Proceed along this bridleway with a view to the right of Newhey Quarry and St Thomas Church. Pass the cottages at Barnard, and at Bethany Farm follow the lane right emerging at Haugh Hamlet. At Haugh Fold we come to the Cedar Tree Restaurant, another suitable refreshment stop. Here our route takes us, right, up North Parade. On the left before the last bungalow, take the single width footpath, designated Mill Footpath No 364. Go along this footpath through the wooded area, with the Quarry in the distance and Piethorne Brook to the left, emerging back at our destination Peppermint Bridge Terminus. This walk is about 2 miles and should be comfortably completed in 2 hours, allowing for photo stops, refreshments, stops to admire the views, and in good time to catch the return bus. Note Bus Timetables are available at Milnrow Library. OUR GROUP If you feel you want to get out more often for a walk in the local countryside, then come along to our weekly Walk and Talk Group. Our walks are designed for people of all abilities and ages, who wish to gain the health benefits, both physical and mental, from walking in a safe and social group. Based at Milnrow Library we meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) from 9.30am leaving out at 10am. It is free and friendly and led by Volunteer Walk Leaders.
