ARMENIAN GENOCIDE AFTER 104 

YEARS?

Imagine if you came home to find that 

your neighbor whom you thought you 

knew and trusted had broken into your 

house, raped your wife and children, killed 

them, taken over your assets and belongings, 

claimed your house as his own, only 

to deny he did anything when the authorities 

arrived. 

Imagine if the world knew exactly what he 

did but he had a gag-order on the United 

States, blackmailing it to never recognize it 

properly. 

Imagine the pain, sorrow and PTSD you 

would endure throughout your life, passing 

it to your new wife, children and grandchildren. 

THIS is the ARMENIAN GENOCIDE and 

THIS is why Armenians scattered throughout 

the world continue to be haunted by 

the ghosts of their ancestors. The Turkish 

government attempted to exterminate its

This is the big one. 30 years of White Party, 

the premiere gay circuit party. Now in its 

30th year and loaded with the history of 

the gay movement in America. As I was 

told, this Party was started as a cancer 

fundraising event in Florida. One of the 

first parties was held August 8, 1974, hosted 

by Chicago business owner Chuck Renslow 

to celebrate his birthday and thank his 

patrons. It was then held for the next 36 

years until 2010. 

Palm Springs, California, has held an 

annual White Party since 1990. The Palm 

Springs White Party Sunday Tea Dance 

features a Ferris Wheel and a fireworks 

display."[5] In 2004, The New York Times 

travel section featured an in-depth look 

at The White Party in Palm Springs 

in conjunction with staff members of 

Noizemag. But locally, it had a much larger 

impact and it continues to this day.

for that same exact reason. The truth is that 

it is neither, and it is both at the same time. 

Because it is gay people, and WP represents 

a very large cross cut of our community, 

good and bad. Your experience is entirely 

what you make of it. Each person you meet 

will be different, and each hotel room party 

will go from mild to wild at any point. 

There are veterans, first timers, the very old 

and their admirers, and the very young and 

their admirers. 

Locally it changed by more than just 

the people that attended, it transformed 

our community. Prior to 1994 it was a 

small innovative party atmosphere. HIV 

treatment was still sketchy at best, there 

was little support, and gay life was confined 

to Cathedral City. The Aids crisis did not 

really help. Palm Springs did not want the 

gay community. Gays could not even march 

in the veteran’s day parade, much less 

parade down the street in Easter bonnets as 

well do now. 

For one thing, the entire gay community 

in Palm Springs owes its existence to the 

White Party, even though it’s not really your

party, we filled the city coffers with tax 

revenue. We learned that gays are a 

commodity, not just filled with reckless 

“anything goes” life styles with a death 

watch over their heads. But transformed 

into double income, no kids, endless cash 

cows. And that’s when gays knew they 

made it, suddenly our money was so good 

it made us look better. By 1994, gays began 

to see HIV as a manageable disease and 

our life span matched most people’s. When 

that happened, gay currency began to 

rise and the stronger Palm Springs local 

business community began to woo our 

favor, offering more and more services 

dedicated to us. Palm Springs, for gays had 

it all, name recognition, a Glitzy Hollywood 

vibe, and months frolicking in the art deco 

sun. No one else but gays take a vacation 

in November or March but we have good 

weather between all those months and 

closet gays flocked to the Springs for 

conventions and golf.

We bore witness to and we documented 

our history like no other. We even helped 

with the development and establishment 

of many groups and services that provide 

our world class support today. From Gay 

Games, Mr. Gay, The Desert Daily Guide 

Queen of the Desert (we gifted to the DAP) 

as well as Prides and so on. And even 

last week, I was at a meeting of a new gay 

business association for Catherdal City that 

has been doing a great job of promoting the 

local businesses and will be doing lots more 

in the coming months. Richard Altman is 

the current president and has been a model 

of community support, not only to the gay 

community but to the boys club and other 

civic betterment groups.

You want to run but you are frozen in your 

tracks. Fortunately, security is on you like a 

horny bear. As many men begin to grab at

What the F? 

"I am kidding Josh", he says with a hearty, 

beefy, yet sexy laugh. "But I would like to 

have breakfast with you tomorrow." 

“Sure where?” 

“In my bed of course.” 

But this is not a Cinderfella story, a jock 

strap is not a shoe, it is better. It is real and 

it really happens if you let yourself be who 

you are. 

For those that don't get the story, just 

be yourself, roll with the punches, your 

knight in shining armor is always watching 

you and is always waiting for the real 

you to show up. And when you do, I can 

promise you it will be worth all the pain 

and suffering it took you to become who 

you are. For a gay person, that alone is a lot 

because if they like the real you, then they 

will be ok with all your past and all that you 

are. Because as I always say, the things you 

experienced made the person I love. 

So, if you get lucky and find yourself sitting 

high atop a Ferris wheel at a party of gay 

men, celebrating gay men, take a moment 

to remember you did this, you made it 

happen. 

The Ferris wheel ride happens all the time 

across America, every summer at the fair. 

But not so, for Teenage boys that meet

night, will likely never get a kiss on top of 

that Ferris wheel ride.

PAUL RICHMOND - GAY ARTIST AND 

ACTIVIST PART II 

Paul Richmond's activism expressed

be an effective non violent method.

promotes expression of emotion 

through art. Paul used this method 

for himself to counteract bullying 

he experienced as a student. He has 

continued in his art to bring visual 

expression to the various aspects 

of LBGTQ life and his personal 

experience as a gay man, to his 

drawings and paintings.

able to photograph models myself 

whenever possible, but sometimes 

I will come across a pic that really 

speaks to me and I'll get permission to 

make a painting inspired by it. 

One of your paintings,"Coming 

Together" is highly erotic. What most 

inspired you in creating it? 

"I think sexuality is beautiful and 

wanted to capture an intimate 

moment of connection between two 

men in a tender and evocative way."

In his interview he answered the 

question, Your work seems to have 

moved through different stages, 

for example, the "Snake Charmer" 

painting is almost photographic in 

execution whereas other paintings are 

more impressionistic as the War Paint 

series of paintings. Do you use live 

models and/or photographs in your 

work? 

His response, " I usually work from 

reference photographs because my 

process involves building up multiple 

layers in oil paint. Each layer takes 

a while to dry, so working with live

Boys is a fun diversion from your 

more intense work. Have you 

considered an animated short of some 

of these scenes? 

"The Cheesecake Boys are a lot of 

fun and I would love to see them 

animated. It would require a lot of 

goofy sound effects for all the times 

their pants fall down or their clothes 

get ripped off. I started the series 10 

years ago because I love classic pinup 


art form the 40's and 50's - all of those 

hilarious scenarios of ladies with their 

skirts blowing up, their undies falling 

down, or both! I had never scene a 

male counterpart of this style and I 

thought it was only fair that pinup 

boys should suffer some similarly 

wardrobe malfunctions. 

It was a privilege to get to know the 

artist and activist Paul Richmond 

through a vicarious text and email 

interview process. I found he is 

beyond the artist and activist, he 

is also a husband and dog lover 

who lives in Northern California 

and indicates they enjoy visiting 

Palm Springs when they have the
