70 Years of the NHS My personal thanks goes out to the Doctors and Nursing Staff of the NHS. I have recently had a quadruple heart bypass and I have nothing but praise for the dedication and professionalism of the staff in the NHS. “They are brilliant” I shout. So what do the next 70 years have in store for us? In 1948 local Doctors came under the NHS system and no payments were made directly to the Doctors unless you went private. Dr Barryman, Dr Love, Dr Thaker, Dr McCloud, Dr Harrington Mr Main , Mr Highham and Mr Hosack, were legendry Doctors and Surgeons within our community. Birch Hill and the Infirmary were expanding and services in the area developing. We had a local ambulance service and ambulances were even based on Birch Road near the hospital. The service expanded and the health of the Nation improved. In 1951 the life expectancy was 66 for a man and 71 for a woman, not much pension to pay out then; in 2011 it was 79 and 83. So we are getting healthier. However changes are on the way Greater Manchester is trying to integrate the Health Service for all 10 Boroughs, 5 General Hospitals have been nominated for those 10 Boroughs, ours is Oldham Royal. Traditional Public Transport links are not established with these 5 hubs. Stonefield Street and Millnrow Village practice proposed a new clinic on the old Dale Mill site; Tory Government funding refused to give the money. Pension plans for medical staff are being reduced. The budget for Greater Manchester Health is one third less than the current spend. There are no current plans for a health centre in the Milnrow and Newhey area; however there are plans for more housing. The three Liberal Councillors in the ward have no power within Rochdale Council and are therefore ineffectual. So what do we do?
