An Independent Financial Examiner is also appointed
to audit our accounts. The business also included the
ballot for a President and committee members.
The committee then appoint a treasurer, secretary,
refreshments host etc from their midst. The
committee consisted of eight members as we moved
forward. The year 2000 was LFWI’s 80th Year and
several events were taking place starting with a
service at Blackburn Cathedral and jamboree at
Houghton Tower
As the years have rolled on members have listened
to speakers and Demonstrators on all sorts of
subjects, cookery demonstrations, hanging basket
demonstration, flower arranging, painting
demonstrations and sessions where we could have
a go, meals out, parties, fashion shows, talks on
reflexology, meetings about the resolutions put
forward at the National AGM,the history of
magistrates courts, games evenings, quizzes, pets
as therapy, food additives, Jewish family life, food
tasting evenings, history of Uncle Joes Mintballs,
trips to the theatre, annual craft and produce show
in Garstang, etc. We always open our meeting with
Jerusalem, have the minutes read and approved,
listen to LFWI business and items sent through from
NFWI. We enter teams into the Annual LFWI fun quiz
and send a delegate to the annual meeting of LFWI.
We tend to enjoy a meal out in January, an annual
trip out for members to places like Chatsworth,
Leighton Hall, Blackwell in the Lake district Renshaw
Hall where some of us encountered Barry Humphries
aka dame Edna Everedge and we celebrate
our birthday.
We have recently raised over £600 to go towards the
cost of a commemorative Bench for Norden Village.
It will be placed outside Norden Old Library for
members of the public to use. The council have
match funded this project and will maintain it for us
over the next 10 years. A big thank you to all
our current members and supporters.
Norden WI were also represented at the Armistice
Day Parade at Norden Cenataph- some of you will
have seen our contribution of a hundred knitted and
crocheted poppies on display. We walked in Norden
Carnival as well dressed as Calendar Girls!
The motto for the WI is INSPIRING WOMEN – it used
to be FOR HOME AND COUNTRY, both bringing women
together and forming friendship and community spirit
in our individual areas. I have been a member from
1999 and thoroughly enjoy all I get involved with.
I have always said that you get out of the WI what you
are prepared to put in and I do hope any women in
this area of Rochdale will feel they can be part of our
organisation and join with us to contribute and get
out of it what they want. We currently have a Craft
group, Walking group and outings group in addition
to our Monthly meetings which are held at Cutgate
Baptist Church on the first Wednesday of the month.
We meet at 7.30pm for a 7.45pm start and meetings
last 1.5 to 2 hours. 2020 is LFWI’s Centenary and we
are proud to be a part of this organisation. Please
come along and join us – see if you like what we do
