Gardening Tips for May
1. Divide or re-position herbaceous perennials as they break
into vigorous fresh growth. Dig up the whole plant and pull it
apart by hand or with a fork if the roots are loose, or section it
with a spade if they are fleshy. Replant the outer sections.
2. Rhubarb likes a deep rich soil; it is hardy and needs a spell
of cold weather to trigger it. Rhubarb should be dug up every
five years and divided to stimulate fresh vigour. The older
central section should be put on the compost heap. Replant
the younger sections do not pick the stalks the first year.
3. Potatoes grow very well in a container, especially first earlies
as they are protected from cold weather if you place the
container in a sheltered spot. The container needs drainage
holes and has to be strong enough to be lifted when full of
wet soil. A dustbin or a potato growing sack is ideal.
4. Sow spring onion seeds thinly in rows where they are to
grow, watering the ground first if it’s dry. The seedlings
should be thinned to a final spacing of about 2cm apart and
should be ready to harvest about six weeks after planting.
