later I saw an ad posted for the same mare on
Facebook but this time something about her
expression caught my attention. I called her
owner and was told the only way she would sell
her was if I took her on a two week trial as she
was “tricky” and she wanted to make sure it
was the right fit. Before the two weeks were up
I had fallen head over heels for my “tricky” girl
and entered her in her first horse trial.
I have never come across a situation with Sir
Windsor where he has not tried his absolute
hardest to do what I was asking, and you
cannot train that. He has a huge heart- along
with a huge piece of mine.
CC Little Black Dress (Harper)
2010 black Arabian-bred mare
Highest Eventing Level: Novice
Status: Currently competing
Owner/Rider: Courtney Calnan
Sometimes the perfect match is the one you
weren’t looking for. When CC Little Black
Dress came into my life, she was the opposite
of what I wanted. I had just sold a green OTTB
gelding and was not looking for anything green,
small, mare, and certainly not an Arabian.
Through a perfect series of events, the lady who
owned Harper at the time observed me catching
riding a tricky pony mare at an event at the
Kentucky Horse Park. She came up to me after
and declared that she had my perfect match in
her barn, that match was a 15.1hh, “extremely
quirky” Arabian cross mare who had never
been to a show. She showed me a video, and I
said thanks but no thanks. A couple of weeks
I was told when I purchased her that she had
been a rescue and through the powers of
Facebook I was contacted by the lady who
adopted her from the rescue. I was able to get
details about her surrender to the Arabian
Rescue Mission in the summer of 2012 and the
events that followed.
I am very proud of the ambassador that she
has become for Arabians and rescue horses.
She is extremely personable and gets noticed
everywhere we go. She is the first horse to
come to you in the field or stick her head out of
her stall. After a jump round or a dressage test
she heads for the first person on the ground she
sees, as if to ask “did I do a good job?” She
absolutely loves “hugs” and is always a favorite
of anyone who meets her. We compete
regularly at the Kentucky Horse Park and all
over USEA Areas 3 and 8. We are fortunate to
train with Five Star Eventer Lillian Heard and
Grand Prix Dressage rider Linda Strine.
