Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group A FOUR-MILE WALK FOR THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS Now that it is summer and the children are on holiday from school, why not encourage them to take a ramble into the local countryside. This is a moderate walk with some lengthy inclines; ascents and descents; some stiles and a motorway bridge. OSMap OL21 covers the route. Have suitable walking shoes or boots and clothing to protect you depending on the weather conditions. If it is hot, take plenty of water to refresh you, and sunscreen to protect you. A walking pole and mobile phone are worth taking. The Route The starting point for our Group is Milnrow Library from where we proceed left, under the motorway bridge, then left into Milnrow Memorial Park. The park is also an alternative starting point, it offers car parking facilities and toilets. Proceed up the high path, left, which passes the Grade II listed War Memorial and take the woodland walk path, past the wild bird feeding station emerging at the end of the park perimeter wall. Proceed along the bridleway that leads to Lower Bradley and St Thomas’ Church. Go down Church Street, then right down the steps, cross over the A640 Huddersfield Road, go along Railway Street, over the Piethorne Brook footbridge and onto Two Bridges Road. Turn left up to Hough Fold, and proceed along the stone sett paved road with charming stone cottages (circa 1788) either side, and Kiln Gardens on the left, into Hough Square. Continue up the tree lined Bethany Lane. As the lane bends a panoramic view of Newhey quarry can be seen. Proceed past Bethany Farm (fresh eggs for sale at the gate) and past Barnards Farm Cottages, emerging again onto A640 Huddersfield Road. Take care crossing the road at this junction because of fast moving traffic. Go down Ogden Lane, observing the Stone Circle left, on towards Lane Bottom, then left up the ‘Private Road’ to Ogden Reservoir. Take the stone steps left and proceed along the reservoir banking, up the end steps and through a gap in the wall. Turn right and continue with the reservoir to your right and the Nature Reserve to your left, through a wooden gate. Proceed up the steps, bounded by trees either side, emerging after a steep climb at another stile, where a period of rest is recommended. Continuing up another steep incline, along the narrow field path, past a sink hole on the right, emerging at a stile onto a lane. Go left along this rough stoney bridleway. Observe panoramic views of Rochdale, and its surrounding hills, before you, & Crompton Moor to your left. Follow the waymarker sign, right, at the junction of Carr Lane, down the bedrock surfaced bridleway which then becomes paved with stone setts. Take care in wet conditions as this bridleway surface can be very slippy. There are many wildflowers along this stretch of lane; Foxgloves, Yellow Iris, Buttercup and Ox-eye Daisy. In contrast is the busy M62 motorway extending before you. The lane emerges at Tunshill House and Ashfield Farm. Cross the M62 road bridge and proceed down past Tunshill Golf Club. As the lane bends, follow a waymarker sign down a single width path and over the golf course. Be aware of the danger of driven golf balls and keep to the wall, right, before crossing the fairway to emerge at a stile, beyond which the path leads down past Hollingworth Academy emerging at the Waggon Inn, Butterworth Hall and Milnrow Library. OUR GROUP If you feel you want to get out more often for a walk in the local countryside, then come along to our weekly Walk and Talk Group. Our walks are designed for people of all abilities and ages, who wish to gain the health benefits, both physical and mental, from walking in a safe and social group. Based at Milnrow Library we meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) from 9.30 am leaving out at 10am. It is free and friendly and led by volunteer walk leaders.
