Excellent ratings went to Karen Huegele, original
poetry; Twinkle Johnson, dramatic reading;
Roy Mark, extemporaneous speaking; Shelly
Lee, poetry; and Huegele and Bill Wright,
duet reading. Good ratings were awarded Sherry
Farquhar, Sally Aman, Burns, Shroyer, Mark,
and Turner Mooneyham. 57
Another award winning group was the
Victoria College Chapter of the Texas Student
Education Association, sponsored by faculty
members LeRoy Pahmiyer and Jean Dabney. In
the spring of 1971, the chapter earned a first
place for its scrapbook at the annual TSEA
Convention at Dallas. The local organization
also received the Emphasis Award and was
named first runner-up for the Outstanding
Junior College in Texas. Shirley McMurray was
president of the chapter. 58
V. T. Kallus ended his distinguished career at
the college in 1971 on a high note. The Victoria
District of the Soil and Water Conservation
Society recognized him as the most outstanding
agriculture teacher in the field of soil conservation
management. Furthermore, he was cited by
the Texas Conservation Society as the outstanding
business professional man in Texas in the
field of conservation for 1970. Kallus came to
the college after his discharge from the military
service at the end of World War II. He assumed
the responsibility of running the veterans program
which involved agriculture, distributive
education, and mechanical arts. When he
retired, Kallus was teaching agricultural classes
and managing the bookstore. 59
