During the first session of the 1994 summer term, courses were offered, with mixed success, to students in Hallettsville and the main campus. Television monitors were set up in the Victoria College Library Building and the hospital in Hallettsville. Hardin taught a course in Victoria, and his lectures were simulcast to the Hallettsville site, whereas Novosad conducted a psychology class in Hallettsville and his presentations were transmitted to Victoria. 42 Another historical event took place at the college in the spring of 1994. On May 14, Dr. F. Benton Burdine, retiring chairman of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, delivered the address at the college commencement, thus becoming the first faculty member to be the principal speaker at a graduation ceremony. The idea to have Burdine make the presentation came from Goodson. The affable speaker, who was held in high esteem by his colleagues, told the Victoria College graduates they had “the right to make their own mistakes—just don’t repeat ours.” He counseled them to “be productive citizens” for they owed it not only to themselves, but “to your children and to your country.” 43 Heeding a directive by the state for community colleges to increase their activity in workforce development, the local college responded by offering “customized training and education” to Union Carbide and Formosa employees in August of 1994. Working closely with the ABC Merit Shop Training Program, established in 1987 by Formosa and five other companies, the classes were initially held at Union Carbide, but they were expanded to Formosa employees. College credit was earned for “real-world subjects like carpentry, welding, pipe-fitting, electronics, instrumentation, and industrial mechanics.” 44 Consummate Texas historian and Victoria College instructor Dr. Stephen Hardin walked off with virtually every major historical book award for 1994 with his work, Texian Iliad: A Military History of the Texas Revolution.
