Today gin is a relentless 365-day marketing behemoth. Forget your Harvest Festival and All Hallows’ Eve perceptions of dark spirits sipped in wingback chairs with crackling fires and ghostly tales; this time of year hedgerow berries, apples, pears, quinces, figs, sloes, damsons, rosehips, chestnuts, walnuts and pumpkins (pre spiced latte) make their collective autumnal bow, providing the ginspiration for gin to exhibit its richer, warmer and darker sides. Sloes have notoriously taken the spotlight this time of year with many a homemade sloe gin starting its three-month marinade (top tip: use a good quality juniper-forward gin and add sugar at the end of the maturing process, to taste). However, I feel a very plummy English fruit with Roman parentage - the Damson, etymologically derived from Damascus - having fallen out of favour, should see a revival akin to Ben Stokes’ bat at Lords and Headingley. Damsons are to plums what port is to red wine; richer, darker and stronger. The fruit has a rich association with the Midlands, having been grown commercially especially in Ludlow for centuries.
