Thrillers to get the adrenalin going
Exceptionally exciting debut by
the new queen of thrillers
A plane crash sees Allison losing the life she’s built for herself – her
perfect fiancé and their world of luxury – is gone in the blink of an
eye. She’s survived the crash, but is now running from a man who
appears to be stalking her every move. Meanwhile her mum, Maggie,
refuses to believe her daughter is missing, presumed dead, and
sets out to discover what’s really happening. Freefall is the exceptional
debut novel by Jessica Barry (a pseudonym) that explores the
deep and complex bond between mothers and daughters, and
that’s secured a major Hollywood film deal. Penguin, R290
Two books ... four gripping
James Patterson stories
One new thriller from James Patterson is great. When
there are three ... bonus! The House Next Door has a
trio of gripping chillers – each in print for the first time.
The House Next Door (with Susan DiLallo) revolves
around married mother of four Laura Sherman, who was
thrilled when her new neighbour invited her on some
errands. But a few quick tasks became a long lunch –
and now things could go too far with a man who isn’t
what he seems. In The Killer’s Wife (with Max DiLallo),
six girls have gone missing and Detective McGrath
knows the only way to find them is to get close to the
suspect’s wife. Maybe too close! In The Witnesses (with
Brendan DuBois), the Sanderson family has been forced
into hiding after one of them stumbled upon a criminal
plot. Or so they think. No one will answer their questions.
And the terrifying truth may come too late. That’s
your weekend reading sorted! Penguin, R290
When news of President Tucker’s affair hits the airwaves,
he’s caught up in a media firestorm. The scandal threatens
his re-election campaign ... he needs the First Lady
to stand by his side if he’s going to win the vote. But
Grace has a mind of her own, and after years of compromise,
unfulfilled promises, deception and betrayal, she
refuses to give in to her husband’s demands. Instead she
escapes the city, loses her Secret Service agents and is
officially off the radar. But did she really run away, or is
she in far greater danger than anyone could have imagined?
The First Lady by James Patterson and Brendan
DuBois is a gripping read ... perfect for a lazy Sunday on
the sofa. Penguin, R290
PROMOTION
I do...
On your wedding day blissful memories
are to be made which you will carry with
you forever.
Find inspiration at The Wedding Expo at
Carnival City and make this day the most
romantic, exciting and unforgettable day of
your life. The Wedding Expo, in partnership
with Old Mutual, will take place on June
8 and 9 at Carnival City Sun Park and will
showcase everything from the perfect wedding
stationery to beautiful blooms, breathtaking
wedding gowns, gorgeous jewellery,
inspiring table décor, photographers,
caterers, financial and legal matters and, of
course, wonderful honeymoons (including
discount deals for visitors to the show).
Brides want to know what the latest
wedding trends are, and they’ll find all
the answers at the expo. Here are a
few examples:
• Bring the outdoors in. Greenery, trees and
shrubbery will take centre stage.
• If you’re going for floral, think very big
and very bold.
• Colourful confetti, balloons and
smoke flares.
• Return to simple, classic wedding dresses.
• The rise of bridesmen and groomsgirls are
breaking the gender barriers for 2019.
• Dark and edgy colour palettes – moodier
accents in direct contrast with romantic décor
and soft textures have dominated the
wedding scene and will continue to do so.
WIN...
20 Lucky readers can win 2
tickets each to The Wedding
Expo. Visit joburgeast.
getitonline.co.za
• • Velvet – definitely incorporate this into
your 2019 wedding décor scheme for that
luxurious feel.
• Non-traditional floral components, such as
grass and wheat. Grasses are chic, unfussy
and add another layer of depth to
your design.
• Personalised place settings – couples are
replacing generic place cards with handwritten
notes.
• Custom illustrations – using an artist to
draw magical parts of your day, such as the
chapel, the venue and the flowers. The artwork
can appear through every element of
stationery of your wedding – save the date,
the invitation and the thank you cards.
Another reason why you shouldn’t miss The
Wedding Expo is that you could be the
winner of a wedding competition worth
R250 000! There will also be daily fashion
shows of the latest bridal trends, cake
tastings, WedTalks for inspiration and the
not-to-be missed Hirsch’s cook-off, a
be-my-guest table inspiration competition
and many more.
Details: Tickets: R100 per adult and R30
VOICE
for the voiceless
She is an FHM Top 20 model, has made it to the cover of an international magazine,
is an actress … and she is deaf. We chat to Jenelle Joanne Ramsami (36) from
Edenvale about being a proud deaf woman who lives her life to the full.
Text: Ina Gouws. Photo: Tanya Borchers Photography. Make-up: Eunicia Ngwenya.
Jenelle is an activist for the deaf and
her passion is to bridge the gap
between the disabled and hearing
communities. “The deaf also
deserve equal rights and we don’t want
to be isolated. I speak for those who can’t
speak, listen for those who can’t hear, see
for those who can’t see. I want to inform
people about the deaf culture and I want
to be an inspiration,” she states.
According to Jenelle, deaf people in
this day and age are not being taken
seriously at all and there is a perception
that the deaf are incapable of
doing what normal people can do.
Although she studied business
management at Oval International
Institution and graduated after three
years with seven distinctions, she has
been turned down from opportunities
because of her disability. She creates
awareness with her Facebook page, Break
the Silence – Hearing Aids Rock, and she
started another page, DEAFinitely Unique
– “Don’t let others DEAFine you”, where
she wants to
run a blog to interview all kinds of
inspiring people.
What is the biggest challenge
that you have experienced as a
deaf person?
Communication is the biggest challenge.
People sometimes treat you as if you
are retarded.
I learned to communicate through sign
language at school, but I had this spirit
12 Get It Joburg East June 2019
of trying to be heard.
Although I could not pronounce words
properly, I would lift my hands anyway
just to get across what I wanted to say.
It made such an impact on the teacher
that I was placed in a school that
taught me how to speak as well as lipread.
I have also learned to read body
language. Humans don’t realise how
many true signals their bodies give
“Most models felt that I
modelled for pity because I am
deaf, which is not true”
away, regardless of their words.
What does it mean for a deaf person
when they see an able-bodied
person signing to them?
It is extremely heart-warming that
someone actually took the time to
learn to communicate with the deaf
community instead of shunning us as
many do. I encourage people to see the
beauty of sign language. I’m crossing
fingers that our government makes
sign language a 12th official language.
You are a part-time aspiring model
and actress. What is your
full-time job?
I am a traffic bureau operator under
the operations department at Netstar.
Who inspires you?
I am inspired by the deaf American actress,
Marlee Matlin. She inspired me to
become an actress. I acted in the first
South African deaf movie called Home
– It’s Where You Belong. Unfortunately,
the South African film industry prefers
well-spoken actresses with no hearing
and speech disabilities. However, I am
not giving up on my dreams to be
an actress in the SA film industry
one day.
Tell us about your
modelling career.
I have modelled in many pageants.
I was the first-ever international
model for Mollmag SA and Mollmag
USA as well as the front cover
model for Moll Magazine SA on the
December 2018 issue.
How do other models treat you in the
industry of modelling as you are the
first model with a hearing disability?
Most models feel that I model for pity
because I am deaf, which is not true.
The reason I model is because I love
modelling and it helps boost my selfconfidence.
Some feel threatened by
me, while others have built a beautiful
start to a never-ending friendship.
What is your goal for the future?
I want to start a modelling school for
unable and able people in order to get
to know each other’s challenges and to
build confidence.
Drama
MAMMAS
Boksburg’s Louw Breytenbach is an actor, writer and drama teacher – and now he is
wearing the hat of TV presenter on his own show, Drama Mammas.
Drama Mammas, based on the
American TV show Dance
Moms, will entertain viewers
with the drama that goes on
behind the curtains when moms will do
anything to get their children into the spotlight
to grab the attention of national and
international judges making their appearances
on the programme
throughout the season.
Get ready for screaming
matches, moms who
are competing against
each other and moms
who want to make
their unfulfilled dreams
come true through their
children. Watch the action
behind the curtains on
Via channel 147 DStv at
9.30pm from May 15.
The reality show has been filmed since
October last year. The concept was created
by Louw and the production company responsible
for bringing it to fruition, Life in a
Bulb, which is headed by talent guru Jennis
Williamson, the producer of the show.
During auditions, Louw chose an East
Rand team to present his drama school,
LALT, at national competitions, such as
SATCH (SA Talent Championship) and the
Greater Ekurhuleni Eisteddfod. The students
also auditioned for agents, advertisements
and music videos.
The East Rand team consists of three
drama students from Boksburg, Gareth
Faire, Caitlin Arries and Aldonè Kok, and
two from Alberton, Uwen du Plessis and
14 Get It Joburg East June 2019
Shenize Bekker. The programme revolves
around the build-up to SATCH … and,
of course, the dramas caused by
the mammas!
One of the five students will be chosen
for a one-month internship at the American
theatre company Serenbe Playhouse
in Atlanta. The lucky student will also
‘Louw is excited about the opening of their
Cape Town branch, and he is already
negotiating deals for a third book.’
receive $1000 to produce his or her own
production at the Serenbe. This dangling
carrot provided its own drama as international
judges flew to South Africa for the
annual Broadway2SA performance camp
to choose the deserving candidate of their
choice to represent the country and, of
course, the theatre.
While busy with the programme, Louw
realised that many of the parents want to
help their kids but do not have the knowledge
to do so in a healthy and nurturing
way. He therefore wrote a step-by-step
speech-writing guide called Sê jou Sê to enable
parents to help their children discover
their voices. Sê jou Sê is available from
Louw’s website, www.louwbreytenbach.
com, at R270.
Louw established LALT Theatre School
in 2012 and is the director of the National
Arts Association. When he opened his
theatre in Boksburg at the age of 21, with
help from community members, the East
Rand was immersed in arts and culture.
His dream is to create educational opportunities
for students across the country
through the arts.
LALT has since evolved
from a little theatre into
an educational hub in Beyerspark,
teaching drama,
vocal and piano classes,
with special packages for
adults and even students
with disabilities. The aim is
to give every person an opportunity
to find their voice
and use it for the better.
“When the cameras stop rolling, and
the curtains close, all we are left with are
the memories – and despite the drama,
we want to ensure that off-camera, we
are truly changing lives,” says Louw.
Louw is excited about the opening
of their Cape Town branch, and he is
already negotiating deals for a third
book. He is also part of an exciting
exchange programme where he will be
heading to New York and Atlanta from
June to July to intern at various theatres
to bring more international dramatic arts
education information to South Africa
and to enable our students to compete
at international level.
Gifts for the man in your life
Old time vibes
Whether it’s the golden oldies or modern sounds dad
loves, the Denon DP-400 turntable is an impressive piece of
technology for all vinyl-faithfuls. We’re talking precision
sound, a sophisticated design, high performance ... and it
fits seamlessly into an existing hi-fi system! With a multispeed
selector (33-1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, 78 rpm) dad can play
all his old vinyls ... he’ll love it! R10 990.
Perfect for travellers
Versatile. Modern. And ideal for business, commuting or
travel. With separate sections for papers and files, numerous
organiser pockets and space for your laptop and tablet, this
Tumi Alpha Bravo Nellis Backpack is made from 70 per cent
post-industrial and post-consumer waste material that would
otherwise go into a landfill. R6 299. Details:
Use your own!
So we love the men in our lives,
but quite frankly, we’re sick of them
using our products. So we’re loving
the just launched Epi-max range
for men. Perfect for dry skin, and
exceptional for those with eczema,
it’s free of artificial colourants and fragrances and comes in
large tubs for men who think size counts. Ointments and
creams in tubs, tubes and pump bottles, hugely reasonably
priced from R48 to R78. You’ll find them at Clicks, Dis-Chem
and your local pharmacy.
Easy-drinking wine
Braai. Pasta. Pizza. Some of our favourite meals. And here’s the perfect wine to
enjoy along with them. De Krans (traditionally known for its lovely port-style wines) has just released
De Krans Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. While staying true to the typical Cabernet character of dark
fruit and cherry cigar, this wine is a refreshing alternative to the heavyweights synonymous with this
category. Made using an old wooden basket press, which is softer on the grapes and results in gentle
tannins, this is perfect for an everyday drinking wine or for a casual dinner with friends. It’s also really
affordable at R75 a bottle. Details: dekrans.co.za
The
world’s
his oyster
Nico Brandt is a guy who jumps at all the opportunities that life has to
offer. He has successfully completed more major projects than one can
count on 10 fingers. We caught up with this extraordinary chef in his quaint
Kensington bistro, Cut & Craft, in Queen Street.
Nico is blessed with a natural
flair for aesthetics. He has
been in the food industry for
about 30 years, during which
he has owned or co-owned numerous
restaurants. Although food is his first
love, he also has a passion for interior
decorating and event planning. The
largest project he undertook was
to arrange a $140-million royal
wedding.
After obtaining an MBA
degree in hotel development
through the Glion Hotel School
in Switzerland, Nico became
involved in many projects at the
Kruger National Park.
To mention a few, he was
appointed to upgrade the
menus and décor at Ngala Safari
Lodge and was responsible for all
the bosbraai sites within the Kruger.
In 1999 he was instrumental in the
privatisation of all the restaurants
in the park. He organised the event
for the Transfrontier Park speech by
Nelson Mandela, as well as the catering
for 3000 people in 2004 for an event to
view a total eclipse of the sun.
In the same year he became the
general manager of the Al Bustan
Palace (a Ritz-Carlton Hotel) in Oman
on the Arabian Peninsula. There he
had to arrange the $14-million royal
wedding that stretched over seven
days. The royal luxuries included a
Swarovski crystal ball for the wedding
couple to sit in, silk tablecloths, crystal
glasses, Churchill porcelain and more.
His last hotel project, before he
settled in Kensington, was to upgrade
‘The largest project he
undertook was to arrange a
$140-million royal wedding.’
the Victoria Crown Plaza hotel in Lagos,
Nigeria, from three to five stars.
Just over two years ago, Nico
bought a golden oldie amidst the
hustle and bustle of Queen Street,
which he turned into one of the most
loved eating spots on the East Rand –
Cut & Craft Bistro.
The bistro is a warm and inviting
‘home’ that welcomes its patrons with
yesteryear’s wooden door frames
and pressed ceilings and a wood fire
crackling in the fireplace. The homely
ambience stretches to the back of the
bistro, where one can relax outside
under the veranda or umbrellas on
sunny days.
It is not uncommon to see business
people escape from their offices with their
laptops to come and work in peace on
the veranda. Others enjoy a cup of coffee
while browsing through the books of
Kensington’s swap library (situated on
the veranda) or enjoying the works of
artists exhibiting in the restaurant.
In two and a half years, Nico has
created a venue with heart and soul
where people love to eat.
The food is just as inviting as the
ambience. Nico has designed a mouthwatering
menu with something
for every taste. Whether you’re a
vegetarian, a vegan or on the Banting
train, you will find a great meal to indulge
in.
Some of the favourite meals served
at Cut & Craft are the oxtail, lamb neck
curry made in authentic Cape Malay style,
pizzas, delicious wraps and hamburgers,
excellent matured steaks and the popular
breakfast option, Crafters Benedict, to
mention a few.
“Our food is crafted with love. I make
comfort food with a twist,” says Nico.
Cheerful winter
FLOWERS
Don’t allow winter’s grey to take over your garden. Pansies, petunias
and primulas are just a few of our fave winter flowers to turn
your garden into a cheerful winter haven.
Indoor/ patio plant …
Anthurium are virtually indestructible and
almost never without flowers.
We love soft pink, the colour of a flamingo,
which is the other name for anthurium.
Plants like a warm room and bright light,
but not direct sunlight. Let the soil dry out moderately
between watering. If the leaves turn yellow
(but not brown and withered), this may be a sign of
overwatering. Anthurium plants are long-lasting indoor
plants that also help to keep the air clean, especially in
winter. The heart-shaped flowers and glossy leaves
add a tropical touch. Just pop the plant into a
simple, elegant container for instant décor.
Hanging baskets … provide bursts of colour on the patio. Pansies, stocks,
dianthus, petunia, lobelia and viola will work in a sunny spot. Primroses and primulas will
do nicely in shady areas. To prevent hanging baskets from drying out too fast, add waterretention
granules to the potting soil. If you have forgotten to buy them, break up old
pieces of floral foam and mix it into the potting medium. www.lifeisagarden.co.za
We’re planting … Pansy ‘Halloween’. The flowers are large and the colour is a
lovely velvety pure black. The black pansies stand out among bright-coloured pansies and
provide a beautiful show of colour. Plant them in full sun to bring out the black shades.
The large plants (20cm high and wide) show up well in containers, or as an accent plant in
garden beds, with spring bulbs, or other bright winter annuals. Plant in well-composted
soil that drains well, water regularly and fertilise once a month. www.ballstraathof.co.za
Garden tasks for June
• Plant out winter-flowering
annuals like pansies, violas,
petunias (summer rainfall areas),
alyssum and fairy primulas.
• Love lilies? Plant bulbs from now
until August, in slightly acid soil
that drains well.
• Water once a week and fertilise
once a month. Spring-flowering
bulbs should not be allowed to
dry out; water for 40 minutes
every four days.
• Deadhead poppies, calendula
and sweet peas to encourage new
flowers. Cut down cannas and
dahlias. Tidy up other perennials.
Shrubs and trees can be lightly
trimmed to let in more sun.
• This is the best month to move or
plant summer-flowering shrubs,
rose bushes, perennials and even
small trees.
• Repot outdoor container plants.
• Water lawns once a month and
fertilise once a month in frost-free
subtropical areas. Remove weeds
by hand or with a targeted
weed killer.
• Protect tender or semi-tender
plants from frost with frost
guard cloth.
• Spray preventatively for conifer
aphid with an organic insecticide,
but make sure that the spray
reaches the inner trunk and
foliage. Insecticide granules can
also be sprinkled around the base
of the conifer.
READER EVENT
Photo safari
Join us on a special, spectacular photo safari ... an opportunity to capture
animals in the bush with the help of professional wildlife photographers
If you’re a keen photographer -
amateur or more experienced - and
you’re passionate about capturing the
perfect wildlife pic, here’s a treat that is
honestly not to be missed.
We’ve teamed up with Canon and are
inviting you to join us for a brilliant,
creative weekend at the magnificent
Thanda Safari private game reserve in
Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
There’ll be specific photographic game
drives with specially trained rangers
and professional photographers, talks
and tips from the best in the industry,
including Andrew Aveley, and you’ll get
to meet and chat to Gerald Hinde, who,
with Will Taylor, has just launched a
magnificent wildlife coffee-table book,
The Big Seven.
Plus (huge bonus) Canon will have their
latest cameras there for you to touch,
feel, say cheese!
What’s more, horrified at what we
know big lodges are charging for these
photographic safaris, we’ve managed
to put together this weekend at a really
affordable rate. We are limiting the
event to 30 guests ... you don’t want to
miss it so early booking hugely advised.
Learn from the best in the (wildlife photo) business
African wildlife photographer and specialist photoguide Andrew Aveley is
an internationally recognised, award-winning wildlife, nature and landscape
photographer. Having grown up in SA, he has focused on the many animal
species and environments locally and in neighbouring African countries. With this
knowledge he has become a sought-after specialist photographic guide.
He combines his love of photography with his passion for teaching with every
opportunity he gets. He’s also the only independent Canon professional trainer in
South Africa along with being a Lightroom and Photoshop specialist.
He is passionate about helping his students improve on their photography skills
– which he is able to assist with thanks to more than 15 years of experience in
the photography field. He also has more than seven years of experience in nature
guiding, which explains why he can offer a pretty impressive portfolio of work. This
Canon Photographic Safari weekend is an amazing opportunity to chat to Andrew
and pick up hints, tips and info.
Win with Canon!
We love a competition ...
and there’ll be a few during
the weekend. One of the
prizes up for grabs will be
the new Canon EOS RP. This
small, light and practical
full frame mirrorless camera
is for advanced amateurs
looking to take a step-up
into Canon’s revolutionary
EOS R System. As Canon’s
smallest, lightest, full frame
digital interchangeable lens
camera to date, it provides
the ultimate blend of
practicality and ease of use,
with impressive image quality
An exceptional camera, an
exceptional prize.
Great wildlife pics
Gerald Hinde and Will Taylor have
enormous wildlife photographic
experience, and quite a few exceptional
books, under their bush belts. With
more than 30 years spent recording
African animals and landscapes, they’ve
an enormous amount of knowledge
about photographing animals in the
bush ... knowledge Gerald will willingly
(and entertainingly) share over the
weekend. You’ll also be amongst the
first to see their amazing new book,
The Big Seven (where they highlight
the Big Five plus two more they feel
belong in this exciting and dangerous
group ... wild dog and cheetah). R650,
We’re just wild
about Lou Harvey
We’ve long been Lou Harvey fans, but have to admit
the new leopard range is our favourite yet. We’re just
wild about the overnight bag (the perfect size for
a safari weekend away in the bush) ... smaller (but
equally desirable) options in this new range include
all the nifty bags we use for absolutely everything ...
there are make-up and cosmetic bags, wine coolers
and lunch bags, laptop and stationery bags. Details:
the Lou Harvey leopard collection, visit our Facebook
page (Get It National Magazines), follow the rules on
the Wild about Lou Harvey post, and you’ll be in the
