Eyeing gold 

In February next year, the South African National Culinary Team will 

be going for gold against more than 2000 chefs from 59 countries in 

the IKA Culinary Olympics, which take place in Stuttgart, Germany. 

The squad started their preparations in earnest by preparing a threecourse 

meal for 110 special guests at Emperors Palace’s Aurelia’s 

Restaurant recently.

for the voiceless 

She is an FHM Top 20 model, has made it to the cover of an international magazine, 

is an actress … and she is deaf. We chat to Jenelle Joanne Ramsami (36) from 

Edenvale about being a proud deaf woman who lives her life to the full.

Jenelle is an activist for the deaf and 

her passion is to bridge the gap 

between the disabled and hearing 

communities. “The deaf also 

deserve equal rights and we don’t want 

to be isolated. I speak for those who can’t 

speak, listen for those who can’t hear, see 

for those who can’t see. I want to inform 

people about the deaf culture and I want 

to be an inspiration,” she states. 

According to Jenelle, deaf people in 

this day and age are not being taken 

seriously at all and there is a perception 

that the deaf are incapable of 

doing what normal people can do. 

Although she studied business 

management at Oval International 

Institution and graduated after three 

years with seven distinctions, she has 

been turned down from opportunities 

because of her disability. She creates 

awareness with her Facebook page, Break 

the Silence – Hearing Aids Rock, and she 

started another page, DEAFinitely Unique 

– “Don’t let others DEAFine you”, where 

she wants to 

run a blog to interview all kinds of 

inspiring people. 

What is the biggest challenge 

that you have experienced as a 

deaf person? 

Communication is the biggest challenge. 

People sometimes treat you as if you 

are retarded. 

I learned to communicate through sign 

language at school, but I had this spirit 


of trying to be heard. 

Although I could not pronounce words 

properly, I would lift my hands anyway 

just to get across what I wanted to say. 

It made such an impact on the teacher 

that I was placed in a school that 

taught me how to speak as well as lipread. 

I have also learned to read body 

language. Humans don’t realise how 

many true signals their bodies give

away, regardless of their words. 

What does it mean for a deaf person 

when they see an able-bodied 

person signing to them? 

It is extremely heart-warming that 

someone actually took the time to 

learn to communicate with the deaf 

community instead of shunning us as 

many do. I encourage people to see the 

beauty of sign language. I’m crossing 

fingers that our government makes 

sign language a 12th official language. 

You are a part-time aspiring model 

and actress. What is your 

full-time job? 

I am a traffic bureau operator under 

the operations department at Netstar. 

Who inspires you? 

I am inspired by the deaf American actress, 

Marlee Matlin. She inspired me to 

become an actress. I acted in the first 

South African deaf movie called Home 

– It’s Where You Belong. Unfortunately, 

the South African film industry prefers 

well-spoken actresses with no hearing 

and speech disabilities. However, I am 

not giving up on my dreams to be 

an actress in the SA film industry 

one day. 

Tell us about your 

modelling career. 

I have modelled in many pageants. 

I was the first-ever international 

model for Mollmag SA and Mollmag 

USA as well as the front cover 

model for Moll Magazine SA on the 

December 2018 issue. 

How do other models treat you in the 

industry of modelling as you are the 

first model with a hearing disability? 

Most models feel that I model for pity 

because I am deaf, which is not true. 

The reason I model is because I love 

modelling and it helps boost my selfconfidence. 

Some feel threatened by 

me, while others have built a beautiful 

start to a never-ending friendship. 

What is your goal for the future? 

I want to start a modelling school for 

unable and able people in order to get 

to know each other’s challenges and to 

build confidence.

MAMMAS 

Boksburg’s Louw Breytenbach is an actor, writer and drama teacher – and now he is 

wearing the hat of TV presenter on his own show, Drama Mammas. 

Drama Mammas, based on the 

American TV show Dance 

Moms, will entertain viewers 

with the drama that goes on 

behind the curtains when moms will do 

anything to get their children into the spotlight 

to grab the attention of national and 

international judges making their appearances 

on the programme 

throughout the season. 

Get ready for screaming 

matches, moms who 

are competing against 

each other and moms 

who want to make 

their unfulfilled dreams 

come true through their 

children. Watch the action 

behind the curtains on 

Via channel 147 DStv at 

9.30pm from May 15. 

The reality show has been filmed since 

October last year. The concept was created 

by Louw and the production company responsible 

for bringing it to fruition, Life in a 

Bulb, which is headed by talent guru Jennis 

Williamson, the producer of the show. 

During auditions, Louw chose an East 

Rand team to present his drama school, 

LALT, at national competitions, such as 

SATCH (SA Talent Championship) and the 

Greater Ekurhuleni Eisteddfod. The students 

also auditioned for agents, advertisements 

and music videos. 

The East Rand team consists of three 

drama students from Boksburg, Gareth 

Faire, Caitlin Arries and Aldonè Kok, and 

two from Alberton, Uwen du Plessis and 


Shenize Bekker. The programme revolves 

around the build-up to SATCH … and, 

of course, the dramas caused by 

the mammas! 

One of the five students will be chosen 

for a one-month internship at the American 

theatre company Serenbe Playhouse 

in Atlanta. The lucky student will also 

‘Louw is excited about the opening of their 

Cape Town branch, and he is already 

negotiating deals for a third book.’

production at the Serenbe. This dangling 

carrot provided its own drama as international 

judges flew to South Africa for the 

annual Broadway2SA performance camp 

to choose the deserving candidate of their 

choice to represent the country and, of 

course, the theatre. 

While busy with the programme, Louw 

realised that many of the parents want to 

help their kids but do not have the knowledge 

to do so in a healthy and nurturing 

way. He therefore wrote a step-by-step 

speech-writing guide called Sê jou Sê to enable 

parents to help their children discover 

their voices. Sê jou Sê is available from

Louw established LALT Theatre School 

in 2012 and is the director of the National 

Arts Association. When he opened his 

theatre in Boksburg at the age of 21, with 

help from community members, the East 

Rand was immersed in arts and culture. 

His dream is to create educational opportunities 

for students across the country 

through the arts. 

LALT has since evolved 

from a little theatre into 

an educational hub in Beyerspark, 

teaching drama, 

vocal and piano classes, 

with special packages for 

adults and even students 

with disabilities. The aim is 

to give every person an opportunity 

to find their voice 

and use it for the better. 

“When the cameras stop rolling, and 

the curtains close, all we are left with are 

the memories – and despite the drama, 

we want to ensure that off-camera, we 

are truly changing lives,” says Louw. 

Louw is excited about the opening 

of their Cape Town branch, and he is 

already negotiating deals for a third 

book. He is also part of an exciting 

exchange programme where he will be 

heading to New York and Atlanta from 

June to July to intern at various theatres 

to bring more international dramatic arts 

education information to South Africa 

and to enable our students to compete 

at international level.

The

his oyster 

Nico Brandt is a guy who jumps at all the opportunities that life has to 

offer. He has successfully completed more major projects than one can 

count on 10 fingers. We caught up with this extraordinary chef in his quaint 

Kensington bistro, Cut & Craft, in Queen Street. 

Nico is blessed with a natural 

flair for aesthetics. He has 

been in the food industry for 

about 30 years, during which 

he has owned or co-owned numerous 

restaurants. Although food is his first 

love, he also has a passion for interior 

decorating and event planning. The 

largest project he undertook was 

to arrange a $140-million royal 

wedding. 

After obtaining an MBA 

degree in hotel development 

through the Glion Hotel School 

in Switzerland, Nico became 

involved in many projects at the 

Kruger National Park. 

To mention a few, he was 

appointed to upgrade the 

menus and décor at Ngala Safari 

Lodge and was responsible for all 

the bosbraai sites within the Kruger. 

In 1999 he was instrumental in the 

privatisation of all the restaurants 

in the park. He organised the event 

for the Transfrontier Park speech by 

Nelson Mandela, as well as the catering 

for 3000 people in 2004 for an event to 

view a total eclipse of the sun. 

In the same year he became the 

general manager of the Al Bustan 

Palace (a Ritz-Carlton Hotel) in Oman 

on the Arabian Peninsula. There he 

had to arrange the $14-million royal 

wedding that stretched over seven 

days. The royal luxuries included a 

Swarovski crystal ball for the wedding 

couple to sit in, silk tablecloths, crystal 

glasses, Churchill porcelain and more. 

His last hotel project, before he 

settled in Kensington, was to upgrade 

‘The largest project he 

undertook was to arrange a 

$140-million royal wedding.’

Nigeria, from three to five stars. 

Just over two years ago, Nico 

bought a golden oldie amidst the 

hustle and bustle of Queen Street, 

which he turned into one of the most 

loved eating spots on the East Rand – 

Cut & Craft Bistro. 

The bistro is a warm and inviting 

‘home’ that welcomes its patrons with 

yesteryear’s wooden door frames 

and pressed ceilings and a wood fire 

crackling in the fireplace. The homely 

ambience stretches to the back of the 

bistro, where one can relax outside 

under the veranda or umbrellas on 

sunny days. 

It is not uncommon to see business 

people escape from their offices with their 

laptops to come and work in peace on 

the veranda. Others enjoy a cup of coffee 

while browsing through the books of 

Kensington’s swap library (situated on 

the veranda) or enjoying the works of 

artists exhibiting in the restaurant. 

In two and a half years, Nico has 

created a venue with heart and soul 

where people love to eat. 

The food is just as inviting as the 

ambience. Nico has designed a mouthwatering 

menu with something 

for every taste. Whether you’re a 

vegetarian, a vegan or on the Banting 

train, you will find a great meal to indulge 

in. 

Some of the favourite meals served 

at Cut & Craft are the oxtail, lamb neck 

curry made in authentic Cape Malay style, 

pizzas, delicious wraps and hamburgers, 

excellent matured steaks and the popular 

breakfast option, Crafters Benedict, to 

mention a few.

comfort food with a twist,” says Nico.

Cheerful winter 

FLOWERS 

Don’t allow winter’s grey to take over your garden. Pansies, petunias 

and primulas are just a few of our fave winter flowers to turn 

your garden into a cheerful winter haven. 

Indoor/ patio plant … 

Anthurium are virtually indestructible and 

almost never without flowers. 

We love soft pink, the colour of a flamingo, 

which is the other name for anthurium. 

Plants like a warm room and bright light, 

but not direct sunlight. Let the soil dry out moderately 

between watering. If the leaves turn yellow 

(but not brown and withered), this may be a sign of 

overwatering. Anthurium plants are long-lasting indoor 

plants that also help to keep the air clean, especially in 

winter. The heart-shaped flowers and glossy leaves 

add a tropical touch. Just pop the plant into a 

simple, elegant container for instant décor.

Hanging baskets … provide bursts of colour on the patio. Pansies, stocks, 

dianthus, petunia, lobelia and viola will work in a sunny spot. Primroses and primulas will 

do nicely in shady areas. To prevent hanging baskets from drying out too fast, add waterretention 

granules to the potting soil. If you have forgotten to buy them, break up old 

pieces of floral foam and mix it into the potting medium. www.lifeisagarden.co.za 

We’re planting … Pansy ‘Halloween’. The flowers are large and the colour is a 

lovely velvety pure black. The black pansies stand out among bright-coloured pansies and 

provide a beautiful show of colour. Plant them in full sun to bring out the black shades. 

The large plants (20cm high and wide) show up well in containers, or as an accent plant in 

garden beds, with spring bulbs, or other bright winter annuals. Plant in well-composted 

soil that drains well, water regularly and fertilise once a month. www.ballstraathof.co.za 

Garden tasks for June 

• Plant out winter-flowering 

annuals like pansies, violas, 

petunias (summer rainfall areas), 

alyssum and fairy primulas. 

• Love lilies? Plant bulbs from now 

until August, in slightly acid soil 

that drains well. 

• Water once a week and fertilise 

once a month. Spring-flowering 

bulbs should not be allowed to 

dry out; water for 40 minutes 

every four days. 

• Deadhead poppies, calendula 

and sweet peas to encourage new 

flowers. Cut down cannas and 

dahlias. Tidy up other perennials. 

Shrubs and trees can be lightly 

trimmed to let in more sun. 

• This is the best month to move or 

plant summer-flowering shrubs, 

rose bushes, perennials and even 

small trees. 

• Repot outdoor container plants. 

• Water lawns once a month and 

fertilise once a month in frost-free 

subtropical areas. Remove weeds 

by hand or with a targeted 

weed killer. 

• Protect tender or semi-tender 

plants from frost with frost 

guard cloth. 

• Spray preventatively for conifer 

aphid with an organic insecticide, 

but make sure that the spray 

reaches the inner trunk and 

foliage. Insecticide granules can 

also be sprinkled around the base 

of the conifer.

launch on August 22 in Fourways and be prepared 

to be photographed by Get It, and featured in print 

and online in Get It and Caxton publications. They 

must also be available for a photo shoot at Get It 

magazine at a time that suits both parties.
