Tanners is family-owned, family-run and resolutely independent, and celebrated its 175
anniversary in 2017! It is run by chairman James Tanner, who is the fourth generation of the
family to work in the company. The firm employs over 100 people across its branches, with
the majority based at its distinctive, black and white Shrewsbury headquarters. Established
in 1842, Tanners is all about good, traditional service, delivered by a team of friendly and
knowledgeable staff, many of whom are long-serving. Tanners has won countless national
awards and accolades, recognising the firm as one of the best wine merchants in the UK.
Indeed Tanners won the title ‘Outstanding Retailer of the Year’ in the 2016 Decanter Retailer
Awards.
Tanners stocks over 1,200 wines and spirits in addition to beers and ciders and a host of local
artisan products, which are supplied to private individuals, corporate enterprises and on-trade
premises throughout the UK. The company also hosts a wide variety of wine events and
tastings.
• 1. Segura Viudas, Tanners Cava, NV, Spain
50% Macabeo, 30% Parellada, 20% Xarel-lo. 12% ABV. A superb, creamy, biscuity Cava with a lovely fine
mousse and plenty of character. Made by the same method as in Champagne, it has style and finesse beyond
its price. [£10.70]
• 2. Cave de Viré, Tanners White Burgundy, 2017, Burgundy, France
100% Chardonnay. 13% ABV. One of the few wines selected to go under the Tanners label, this is classic white
Burgundy with a succulent, buttery Chardonnay character and a touch of oak to give it breadth. [£12.50 or
£10.50 when buying 6 or more bottles]
• 3. Kate Radburnd, Tannners New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, 2019, Marlborough, New
Zealand
100% Sauvignon Blanc. 12.5% ABV. Wonderfully aromatic on the nose with some tropical passionfruit
character amongst the grassy, herby, asparagus notes, the palate is elegant fresh and fine with good length.
[£11.20]
• 4. Famille Gonnet, Tanners Rhône Valley Red, 2016, Southern Rhône, France
60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 10% Mourvèdre. 14.5% ABV. Pretty nose of red summer fruits with
some plump, creamy blue fruit notes. Medium-bodied, round and juicy with good volume and supple tannins,
offering long flavours of peppery spices over crisp red fruit. Very easy drinking. [£10.95]
• 5. Duorum, Tanners Douro Red, 2016, Douro, Portugal
40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz. 13.5% ABV. Lovely juicy black fruit character with
herbs and peppery hints on the palate. Plenty of depth, complete and easy. A fine example of what the Douro
can do. [£8.70]
• 6. Maison Sichel, Tanners Claret, NV, Bordeaux, France
48% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec. 13% ABV. This has been made even
more attractive by the addition of some extra old-vine Merlot to give it a bit more of the succulence and
juiciness for which it is renowned, while still retaining its classic balance and style. [£9.20]
• 7. Bodegas Ayuso, Tanners Spanish Reserva, 2014, La Mancha, Spain
75% Tempranillo, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.5% ABV. This has wonderful silky, velvety texture with the
Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend giving excellent blackcurrant fruit combining with soft, vanilla spicy flavours
from long maturation in American oak. [£8.95]
