On Sunday 22nd September, ourladies competed in the semi final of the Harris Bowl, a CountyCompetition. We are very proud of our team who played BentonHall and emerged the winners. They will now play againstMaylands Golf Club in the final of the competition which takesplace next Saturday 5th October.On 23rd September we held our Autumn Meeting when we playeda team Stableford competition in teams of 3 with the best 2 scorescounting. This was followed by a meal in the clubhouse.The winners of the team competition on the day were:-Caroline CrispinJackie ScollenJulie Morrow.The 3 of them are seen above having been presented with theirprizes by Sharon Warrington our Lady Captain.It was also our annual trophy presentation of all trophies andmedals won during the year. Golfer of the Year was won by JoStentiford and our Club Champion was Jackie Scollen.Our popular walking football sessions continue at the3G pitch every Tuesday evening, year roundIt's exactly as it sounds - a standard game offootball where players walk instead of running. 923 FOCUS.qxp_Layout 1 01/10/2019 10:34 Page 25FOCUS ON SPORT0South Focus Woodham FocusSouth Woodham Focus 251st XV vs Norwich - Saturday 28th September 2019SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS FOOTBALL RFCSouth Woodhams second home game of the season ended in disappointment asthey went down to London 2 North East league leaders Norwich 16 point to 27.The lads will be frustrated as they led right up into the 70th minute when ill -discipline and some slack defending handed the advantage back to the visitors inwhat had been a very tight game of good end-to-end rugby.The opening exchanges offered little for the spectators with both defencessnuffing out any attack that came their way. Woodham were unfortunate to losecaptain Lewis Gilbert, fly half Terry Stiffell and in form prop Tate Holliday to injuries;leaving the bench empty with only a quarter of the match gone.It was Woodham who opened the scoring with a well worked try finished byWarren Duggan. The conversion was missed. However, the home side were ableto extend their lead after a promising attack resulted in a penalty scored by JamieCox. The half ended with Woodham on top with an 8 pointy advantage.An extremely slow start from the home side saw Norwich score two convertedtries before the lads woke from their slumbers to get back in the game. It was game on when Woodham broke out of their own half toscore a fine running try from the backs, winger Alex Baker touching down.Jamie Cox added an extra three when Woodham were awarded another penalty, with just 15 minutes of the game left the home side led16 points to 14.What followed was a period of implosion as the home side handed the game back to Norwich. First, they gave away a soft penalty whichwas compounded by some stupid back chat that brought the kick within range of the posts, Norwich took advantage and made it a twopointgame.The same error was repeated shortly after and Norwich were handed the lead as, again, poor discipline saw the ref march a penalty on10 more yards to make the kick easy. It also saws Stevie Hurrell sin binned leaving a gap in the defence for the closing few moments ofthe game.Norwich put the game out of reach of the home side with a try straight from the kick-off.The positive to take away for the home team is that, despite losing key players early on, they more than held their own against anextremely physical and well drilled Norwich side that are flying high at the moment. On the down sided they let themselves down aspoor discipline handed the game to the opposition undoing all of the hard work that had gone before.Under 16’s vs Basildon - Sunday28th September 2019This weekend saw the U16’s kick off the season waterfall cup with an opener away at Basildon. With this also being the boys first matchof the season following the dry off by Benfleet last week, it would be good to see how the boys would put training into practice.Basildon won the toss and selected to have the wind advantage and put Woodham forward to start the match. The nerves were evidentas the visitors gave away a couple of early knock ons, but all in the home sides half.In the 3rd minute Woodham had a good break from the breakdown, with the ball shipped from No 8 Gerrard out through the 9, Jim,along the backs to bullet on the wing who opened his legs to cross the line. However, the ref had blown for a forward pass on the homesides 5m line.From the scrum the hosts pushed back the Woodham side and a kick deep into the Woodham 22 saw the visitors scrabbling back to haltthe attack. Woods managed to shut down the home side winning a penalty for not releasing. However, Woods gave the ball away forthe same infringement on their 22, and the hosts too full advantage securing the 1st Try of the match on 11 minutes. The conversationwas missed, 5 – 0.From the restart, Woodham chased deep into the home teams half. Woodham forced an error at the breakdown and were awarded witha penalty for not releasing. Rhino pushed the ball into the side line for the Woodham Line Out on the home sides 22.Basildon won the line out, and with Woodham being too narrow in the defence, allowed the home side to push forward. A nicely timedup field kick, chased down by both H and Travis, Basildon crossed over for their second of the match under the posts. The conversionwas good and Basildon extended their lead, 12 – 0.From the restart Woodham get the knock on advantage but were unable to make anything of it, they came back for the scrum. Woodhamtry a quick kick up field, the home side run out of space and Woodham win a scrum for off side. Woods win the ball but get pinged fornot releasing at the breakdown.Woodham win the scrum, and again try the chip through, but the home side ground the ball to win the 22 Drop. The kick goes straightto Redmond who makes a good 20m into the home side half before being stopped. Scrum awarded to Basildon. Basildon kick from thescrum and chase through to pick up the ball. H brilliantly covers with a tackle stopping the attack.The visitors win a line out, and put on a driving maul. The ball goes out to the Basildon backline and almost drive over but Woodssomehow manage to push Basildon out. Woods again leaving too much space on the wings allow Basildon to cross again and with theFOCUS
