Christmas. The first card printed in 1875
was a success. The next year five million
cards were printed.
Prang held a design contest in 1884 open
to artists and designers with prizes of
$1000., $500, $300, and $200. This was a
substantial monetary award at this time
of history and it attracted well-known
artists and designers including the architect
Stanford White and designer Louis Tiffany.
The Prang company continued to print
cards until the 1890's when inexpensive
cards began importing from Germany.
Prang is also the founder of the Prang art
materials company which is responsible
for Crayola crayons and other art materials
that are widely used today in schools and
by artists.
Christmas cards are now available in
personal photo cards, elaborate design
cards that are sent from corporations to
their patrons, cartoon cards, cards that play
carols, Christmas cards that convey almost
any conceivable message that one could
want to send representing the holiday.
Today the two largest printers of Christmas
cards and greeting cards, in general,
are the Hallmark Card Company and
American Greetings. In discussions with
representatives of each of these companies
regarding the marketing of cards
specifically to the LGBTQ community,
we will look at how our community is
being considered and represented in the
marketing of Christmas cards and greeting
cards overall.
