HEALTH & WELLNESS
Risk factors you can control:
Drinking
Consuming alcohol can increase cardiac health
risks, raise triglycerides and cause irregular
heartbeat. Consume safely; no more than two
drinks per day for men (and one for women).
Blood Pressure
High blood pressure forces the heart to work harder,
causing damage over time. If your blood pressure
is higher than 120 / 80 , your heart attack risk is
considered elevated.
Smoking
If you need a good reason to quit, then know this
alarming statistic: smoking is directly related to
about 1 in 4 heart attacks. People who smoke have
a heart attack risk two to three times higher than
non smokers.
Weight
Research has indicated that being overweight
or obese is linked to several heart attack related
risk factors. Check with your doctor to help you
determine an ideal goal weight based on height and
age.
Physical Activity
Being active by doing exercises every day with three
to four 40 minute sessions of moderate to vigorous
activity each week can help lower blood pressure,
cholesterol and weight.
Diet
To fight against heart disease, start by eating
healthily. Make sure fruits, vegetables and grains, as
well as low fat dairy, poultry and fish are part of
your diet. Limit your intake of red meat and sugar.
