Rochdale Music Society’s

40th Anniversary Season

The Society was founded in 1979 and began promoting concerts

of classical music in 1980, since then the people of the borough

of Rochdale have had the opportunity to experience

performances by some of the very best soloists,

ensembles and orchestras on the international music

scene. Over the years concerts have taken place in

various venues across the Borough, including the

Town Hall, the Gracie Fields Theatre, Middleton Arena

and St. Andrew’s Church, Rochdale. At the moment all

our concerts are being held in Heywood Civic Centre on

Saturday evenings at 7.30pm.

This Anniversary Season will continue on March 7th with an evening

of music played by the Pelléas Ensemble, a Trio of musicians combining

Flute, Viola and Harp in arrangements of music by Couperin, Bartok,

Prokofiev, Debussy and Jolivet. Their performance in London’s Wigmore Hall was

described as exhibiting “captivating vitality” and “effortlessness and delicacy”.

Something different by way of the combinations of sounds which should be very

interesting to experience!

On April 4th the French pianists, Patrick Hammerlé, will play some of the best

loved music by his compatriots, Fauré, Ravel, Debussy,

Roger-Ducasse, Severac along with Chopin’s Four Ballades -

a programme designed to please and satisfy any lover of

music for the piano!

On May 16th the British soprano Raphaela Papadakis,

who has performed in the Royal Opera House, the

Staatoper Berlin and with the Glyndebourne Festival

Opera, will bring our Anniversary Season to its end

with songs by Clara Schumann, Berlioz, Poulenc, Ravel

and Bernstein - a delicious assortment of styles.

Variety could be said to be one of the Society’s

keynotes, with the main one being its emphasis on

bringing to Rochdale great music performed by the

best artists to the delight of all around.

This it hopes to be able to continue to do for many

generations to come.

If there is anything else you would like to know about the Society,

please do get in touch with me or the Chairman, Mrs. Shirley Mitchell,

whose email address is: samitchell655@talktalk.net.
