AdamsArtExpose’ ART THE ART OF FINDING FALSE INFORMATION IN POLITICAL ADVERTISING Now that the Democratic list of contenders is basically down to two candidates the beginning of the barrage of political ads on social media, television, and visual ads in your mailbox will begin. The ads have already begun with the primary election. You may have thought how much do these 8"x10" fliers cost on shiny cardboard. According to a variety of political sources, this presidential election will be the costliest yet in U.S. history. An estimated $2.4 billion will be spent by candidates and various interest groups. This is the estimate for the presidential election only if combined with house and senate campaigns the total is estimated at $6.5 billion. False and misleading information will be rampant. Facebook has indicated that it will not attempt to edit or discriminate regarding false and or misleading information in political advertising. Politicians are not held responsible for truth because their statements are considered political speech which is protected by the First Amendment. The question is how do you distinguish what is legitimate and distorted claims in political ads. AdamsArtExpose’ One way is to be a discriminating visual observer, listener, and consumer of politics in general. A variety of studies show that 99 percent of the information that comes to the brain is visual and people process visuals 60,000 times faster than reading from text. Hearing is also considered effective for transmitting information, although reading leads to higher comprehension, retention, and efficiency in understanding. Trump has depended on the support of his base (whoever that base is comprised of). His most recently counted lies and distortions as of last week total 15,413. He is a known nonreader which may be translated that much of his base may also be nonreaders. Having the biggest megaphone is important for non-reading constituents, as a result, Fox News and right-wing radio will be a large factor in the 2020 Republican campaign. Viewing and listening discriminately will be essential in sorting out lies and falsehoods in this election year. Visuals will have the most effective impact on voter decisions. combination. Two examples in this article are the HOPE poster created for the first Obama campaign. HOPE as read in text, is an aspiration for something better, activism to accomplish something better is even more effective. The other visual example is a simple to the point poster photographed by my friend Biron last week in San Francisco as he does in many of his documentary photographic outings, this photo-documented a poster in a window reading, Impeach the whole damned bunch!. Although textually and visually effective in this poster, Impeachment has been shown to be ineffective in a divided society with a pack of decadent followers who are willing to surrender democracy and decency to complacency. We have an exciting and exceptional responsibility to be alert and prudent in order that we will be able to continue experiencing democracy, as opposed to dictatorial tyranny, in this 2020 election year.
