Everyone wants to be authentic. We all want
to be true to ourself, not a practitioner of
social expectations. Studies have indeed shown
that feelings of authenticity can go hand-inhand
with numerous psychological and social
benefits: higher self-esteem, greater well-being,
better romantic relationships and enhanced
work performance. Still some are equally
less fortunate. And that is the point, really.
Identification and location of those in need.
Knowing who will be most impacted and how
we can help them means reaching out to our
groups and organizations like the LGBT center
or Well in the Desert.
This magazine literately started in response
to the HIV virus outbreak. In some ways, are
better off understanding things like a virus
and our past actions react reflects that. But we
won't mistake a difference in direction with a
difference in compassion. We know what it
means to shop locally. I know, because we have
been harping on that for years. But now more
than ever, we as a gay community can show the
same fortitude to be our authentic selves and
teach the world how to come together, not for
our selves but for those less fortunate.
Most importantly, authentic people behave in
line with their unique values and qualities, even
if those idiosyncrasies may conflict with social
conventions or other external influences. For
example, introverted people are being authentic
when they are quiet at a dinner party,'
Being nice to each other starts by being nice to
everyone.
