1036 Italian school, prob. 18th c, Madonna & Child<br />

Madonna and Child with Cherubim, unsigned, oil on canvas, in a 19th c gilt-gesso<br />

frame, 42’’ H x 31’’ W, est:$1500/2000. Provenance: Belnord Art Studio, New York,<br />

NY (see label verso); Property of a Private Pasadena, CA Collector Condition:<br />

Visual: Craquelure and stretcher bar creases throughout. The canvas loose on the<br />

stretchers. A few spots of loss along the upper edge and on the figures. Blacklight:<br />

Evidence of touch-up along the edges and on the figures and a 2’’ diameter area in<br />

the upper left quadrant. Evidence of other areas of older restoration throughout.<br />

1037 Italian school, prob. 18th c, st. Jerome<br />

Unsigned, unframed oil on canvas laid to canvas, 42.75’’ H x 36’’ W, est:$1500/2500.<br />

Provenance: Property of a Private Pasadena, CA Collector Condition: Visual:<br />

Craquelure throughout. The canvas tacking edges unevenly cut and the canvas<br />

cracked in the upper right corner. Blacklight: Spots and areas of touch-up throughout<br />

with the largest areas in the upper left, upper right and lower right corners. A 2’’<br />

diameter area of touch-up on the figure’s beard.<br />

1038 Italian early 18th c, Madonna & Child<br />

Two works: Madonna & Child and <strong>John</strong> the Baptist, each: unsigned, each: oil on<br />

canvas, each: 57’’ H x 18’’ W, est:$1500/2000. Provenance: Property of a Non-profit<br />

Organization, Beverly Hills, CA Condition: Visual: Each: Craquelure and paint<br />

shrinkage throughout and frame abrasion with minor losses along the edges. The<br />

canvas loose on the stretchers. <strong>John</strong> the Baptist: Vertical surface abrasions in<br />

the lower left corner, left center quadrant and upper right quadrant. Madonna &<br />

Child: A few dots of paint loss and indentations scattered throughout. A few drips<br />

of surface wall paint in the upper left quadrant. Blacklight: <strong>John</strong> the Baptist: A 2’’<br />

diameter area of restoration with corresponding patch on the figure’s right shoulder.<br />

Madonna & Child: A 2.5’’ diameter area of restoration on the Madonna’s neck with a<br />

corresponding patch. Each: Evidence of other spots of older restoration throughout<br />

but difficult to read under heavy, uneven varnish.<br />

1039 Italian probably 18th c, Christ carrying Cross<br />

Christ carrying the Cross to Calvary, unsigned, oil on canvas laid to canvas,<br />

46’’ H x 70’’ W, est:$1500/2000. Provenance: Property of a Non-profit Organization,<br />

Beverly Hills, CA Condition: Visual: Craquelure throughout and some scattered<br />

surface abrasions and minor losses. A vertical 2’’ tear in the upper center quadrant<br />

and a vertical crease between Jesus and Mary extending the length of the canvas.<br />

Blacklight: An extensive area of scattered touch-up in the upper center quadrant.<br />

Spots and areas of touch-up scattered on the figures. Evidence of older restoration<br />

along the vertical crease and in other areas throughout.<br />

1040 a German Bruckmann silver pierced center bowl<br />

Late 19th/early 20th c, marked ‘’.800’’ and with maker’s mark of Bruckmann & Sohne,<br />

Heilbronn, and further marked ‘’Posen’’, the deeply scalloped C-scroll-decorated<br />

rim with pierced cherub rocaille clasps to sides and caryatid handles to ends, over<br />

a pierced lattice, floral and C-scroll-decorated body, over a similar spreading foot,<br />

with later removable brass liner, weighable silver, 10.75’’ H x 23.5’’ W x 10.25’’ D,<br />

60 oz, est:$1000/2000. Note: Peter Bruckmann (1865-1937) was the first chairman<br />

of the Deutscher Werkbund (founded in 1907) and the Bruckmann firm produced<br />

many pieces by leading German designers. Provenance: Retailed by L. Posen<br />

Witwe; Property of a Private Pasadena, CA Collector Condition: Very nicely chased<br />

and decorated. Highly detailed. General marks, scratches, rubbing and tarnishing<br />

commensurate with age and use. Wing of one caryatid lacking. Some bending to tips<br />

of wings. Same figure with laurel wreath likely reduced slightly. With polish residue in<br />

crevices. Brass liner likely a later addition, as stated.<br />
