misc | ask the petxpertBY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVMHow Can I ImproveMy Pets Immune System? The last three months have been stressful for all of us, includingour pets. It started with a shortage of toilet paper, then disposablegloves, facemasks, hand sanitizers and now food, specificallymeat. Everything has changed because of this quarantine. Businesseshave closed; shopping became limited, and many other socialnorms have been modified. Our pets’ lives have been affected as well. You are home when they are used to resting while you were at work. Now you are walking them to excessively. You are probably overeatingout of stress and boredom and your guilt tells you that they need treatstoo. Could this cause a problem? Of course it can, lifestyle changes willaffect your pets in the same manner it affects humans. If we have learned one thing from this whole endeavor is that wereally need to protect and build a healthy immune system to fight offhealth challenges. The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they make that helps the body fightinfections and other diseases. The immune system includes whiteblood cells, organs, and tissues of the lymph system, such as the thymus, spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and bone marrow. The first step in retaining a healthy immune system is removing exposureto toxins that will debilitate these organs that we need functioningat their optimal level. Many household and yard products contain toxic, unnatural components that compromise the immune system. Drugs andmedications often have this same compromising effect. We understandthat we cannot always eliminate exposure toxins that are all around us,however we can help the body eliminate them once they invade.Good, species appropriate nutrition is the perfect system for deliveringnutrients that are needed to maintain and build the structure ofthe whole body but also acts to remove various toxins that we all havebeen exposed to. It is important to have diversity in the diets of ourpets and ourselves as different foods remove specific toxins. Examplesof this are seen with foods such as cilantro and chlorella which canremove many heavy metals such as mercury and aluminum plus bothare a source of micronutrients needed to strengthen the system. We also must realize that the body is dynamic which means it is alwayschanging. Parts or the body break down and rebuild in an ongoingbasis. We have seen complete elimination and healing of pets and theircaregivers with just a simple lifestyle change by revamping the diet. The impact of supplying the cleansing and nutritive power of a varietyof different botanicals, herbal foods and spices into the body impactsthe energetic process to heal and to fight the assaults on the body.We know it is not about what we face but how the body responds tothese assaults. Our pets often reflect and respond to our energies andfears. The stronger our physical, mental, and emotional strength, thestronger the immune response will be. The cleaner our environmentand our food supply are, the healthier our immune system which willresult in a more resistant body. We feel that it is imperative that wefollow this system of immune building as an ongoing lifestyle change.Upon doing this, we can all be more confident in standing up to fightany physical threats that we encounter.Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners inMy Paleo Pet (formerly Fiesta Pet Deli) in Pompano Beach, FL, and cohostsof the PetHealthCafe.com radio show.
