Ramblings From The Editor 

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright 

Crew from New York 


Life isn’t easy right now. Not for owners 

of Cape May restaurants, who still can’t 

seat indoors. Not for owners of retail, 

who will never make up for COVIDincurred 

losses. Not for restaurant wait 

staff, who are shuffling around in heat and 

humidity while wearing masks; nor for cooks, 

who have never had it easy. 

It can’t be easy for our visitors, either. They 

come here regularly — for many it’s their favorite 

place on earth — to spend hard-earned 

dollars on fun and relaxation, a necessary break 

from the hassles of everyday life. This summer, 

the brakes have been pumped on a lot of the 

activities that make this place so special. 

But on Sunday (the culmination of what 

was a very difficult and trying week in EZ land) 

I was reminded of how easy it is to still enjoy a 

perfect day in Cool Cape May, even in the grip 

of COVID. 

The wife and I spent a few blissful hours on 

the beach in front of Congress Hall, munching 

away on buffalo chicken cheesesteaks from 

the Akroteria. Well, it was blissful until Diane 

decided to sit upright and play a stressful game 

of guess-where-the-next-beach-umbrella-isgoing-to-be-uprooted-and-sail-through-theair. 

Ever since two beachgoers were impaled 

by umbrellas, in the past four years, she’s been 

a little obsessive on windy days. It has to be 

said — in the course of 15 minutes we saw 

three umbrellas come undone. It’s possible you 

might see an angry editorial in the op-ed pages 

of a regional newspaper sometime soon. 

It was time to head off the beach and bike 

to Central Park Farm Market in West Cape May, 

where David and Peggy Cicchitti offer fresh 

veggies AND fish. We bagged a pound of jumbo 

shrimp, a slab of halibut, Jersey corn and yellow 

cherry tomatoes. Highly recommend this place, 

which is still flying under the radar a little bit. 

I then biked to Sunset Liquors to load up 

on a box of Crushin’ It, another ace beer from 

the geniuses at Cape May Brewing Co. I have 

never been a fan of IPA (those bitter hops don’t 

do it for me), BUT... Crushin’ It is absolutely my 

new favorite beer. It’s bursting with fresh, zesty 

orange flavor. If there’s a better summer beer 

out there, I haven’t tried it yet. 

I drained a couple cans while grilling the 

buttery halibut and shrimp (my marinade of 

chilli, garlic, red pepper, lemon juice and chocolate-hazelnut 

coffee granules was amazing) 

over charcoal bricquettes. 

I hope you, too, can enjoy the simple pleasures 

this summer, whether you’re visiting or 

lucky enough to live here.

Get in, losers. We’re going to the gas 

station for dinner... If you’ve called 

Exit Zero in the last few days (and 

listened to the hilarious new outgoing 

message) you already know we’ve 

cut our hours. If you haven’t called Exit Zero 

(and listened to the hilarious new outgoing 

message), we’ve cut our hours. The 11-11 grind 

was taking its toll on both front and back of 

house (how else do you think a guy like me 

loses 20lbs?) as we’ve been operating with, 

essentially, a skeleton crew since March 17. So, 

for the foreseeable future, we’ll be open 3-9, 

with the bar open until 10, and live music every 

night, 5:30-9:30. 

Speaking of music (segue!), I got a little 

social media pushback (is there another kind?) 

on using the term “cringe volcano” in reference 

to the “song by a local artist” segment on 101.5 

WCFA. In re-reading the bit, I wrote “generally” 

when I meant “occasionally”. So, my bad 

on that. Otherwise, many of these songs are 

competent and sound like songs — verse, chorus, 

bridge. Some of them are even good, with a 

few I’d qualify as great and should be in rotation 

on WXPN. And some are cringe volcanoes; 

so bad I can’t believe I’m listening to it on the 

radio and that somebody went to the effort of 

writing it and the expense of hiring musicians 

and engineers to record it and at NO TIME IN 

THAT PROCESS did a single person stop them 

and say, “You know this isn’t very good, right?” 

(Side note: I may soon be hosting my own 

WCFA show, so…) 

But local artists should not feel singled out. 

I feel the same way about many songs from my 

musical idols. I mean, Billy Joel did a song in 

French that is spectacularly awful. Prince has 

many, many head scratchers. R.E.M. are, at 

times, impenetrable. But Squeeze is perfect. 

EZFS digital content manager Nicole 

James said to me, “You didn’t make me cry!” 

after I roasted her pretty good a couple issues 

ago. So maybe this will do it — you’re beautiful 

and nice and everybody loves you. 

I deliver 100 copies of this rag to the Lobster 

House Fish Market every Thursday morning 

and, I don’t know, there’s something about that 

place…. Smells a little fishy to me. (Listen, they 

can’t all be A+ jokes…) 

While dropping off at the Shell station just 

over the bridge, I saw a Prius with a “Toyoda” 

sticker on it in the shape of Baby Yoda’s head 

and, I don’t know, it just really tickled me. 

Probably more than it should have. As if some 

outside… force... was making me laugh. 

So I’m cruising down Ocean Drive 

towards Harbor View at around 75… 45mph 

when my passenger side window just goes 

down all by itself. What the hell? I’m think-

I tried” kind of deals. (Boy, what a 

fascinating column this week. My 

editor, Jack Wright, put the maloik 

on me last month by saying, “Your 

columns have really been killing it 

lately.” Every one since has sucked 

donkey balls.) 

Bank Robbers of the Week: 

My wife Cathrine and I were 

doing the night drop at [NAME 

REDACTED] bank the other night. 

I, as I do, got the back stuck halfway 

in (I say halfway in and not 

halfway out because I’m an optimist). 

So Cath gets out and puts 

the key in except the key won’t 

work when the drawer is jammed. 

What followed was an epic tug of 

war that saw the bank bag itself 

completely destroyed, a few $1 

bills lost in the process, but ultimately 

the deposit was made. I 

expect to see the security footage 

on America’s Funniest Home Felons 

any week now. 

Come on, Justin Mattes, we’re 

TNT now! Get it straight! Yes, I 

know last year we were O’Brien & 

Joyce and four years before that we 

were TNT before going to O’Brien 

& Joyce and eventually back to 

TNT this, but we’re TNT now! 

Why is that so hard to remember? 

(There’s a People’s Front of Judea 

joke in there somewhere I’m not 

smart enough to write.) 

Was nice to see my former 

employer, Jack Morey, out to dinner 

at the (ahem) Black Duck the 

other night with his lovely bride 

Karen and various hangers-on. 

the backlog of cars these guys have 

to go through since they reopened, 

I probably could have driven in 

there with the thing on fire and 

they would have passed it. If you’re 

going to get your car inspected this 

week, maybe grab a cold beverage 

or cup of coffee for those guys. 

About once a week I allow 

myself some carbs, just to take the 

edge off. This usually consists of, 

say, rye toast and home fries with 

my Sunday omelet from Villas 

Diner (delicious and the prices are 

incredible) or, say, a handful of 

crunched up Frito’s Honey BBQ 

twists atop my Wawa chicken 

salad salad (Frito’s Honey BBQ 

twists are the second most perfect 

food on Earth, behind only the 

Swedish Fish and slightly ahead 

of the Egg McMuffin). The result, 

without fail, is a 4-lb weight gain. 

Frustrating, though I’m usually 

able to work most of it off. But if 

Planet Fitness doesn’t open soon 

I’m going to go nuts. And don’t tell 

me to go outside and run. That’s 

for crazy people. I need my headphones, 

my elliptical and how 

about a damn ball game to watch? 

Which brings us to… 

Beard & Weight Watch of the 

Week: The beard is what it is. I’m 

going to let the rest of it grow in 

around my vandyke for a while 

and see what happens. I’m also 

not going to cut my hair for a while 

because I think the apocalypse is 

coming soon and I want to have 

my Crazy Man hair ready when 

Mel Gibson shows up. My weight 

is at 232, down 20 overall. I am 

reasonably happy with this but 

would love to get out of the 230s 

for good this week. Been lingering 

here for quite a while. 

He ate, he drank, he danced with a Tish Roussos Moment of 

telephone pole... I love Jack dearly, 

but never, ever, ever want to work 

for him again. 

I took my Highlander in for 

inspection last Monday only to

I’m looking out the window, and the 

trucks won’t stop coming. My name is 

Andrea, and I live at 176 Hillside Terrace, 

Kingston. My husband is out of the 

house weekdays between 8 a.m. and 7 

p.m. so it’s safe to meet then.” 

That’s how the calls begin to Sadie, 

because that’s how she has told people to alert 

her. Sadie is a different kind of mercenary for 

hire. She only takes as much money as you 

can offer at the time, she provides service. 

Secondly, she focuses only on abusive relationships. 

The movie, A Vigilante came out a couple 

of years ago to critical acclaim. It’s dark, and 

it doesn’t pull any punches. Sadie, played by 

Olivia Wilde, is a woman who lives in motel 

rooms. She doesn’t carry much baggage, at 

least not physically. 

She is a drifter who makes her way by 

helping abused women — this is no group 

therapy. She helps them by entering the home 

VERY unannounced. Using advanced martial 

arts, she renders the abusers helpless and she

exacts her own justice on the spot. She gets 

them whatever they need from their abuser 

plus a long head-start to escape. 

Olivia Wilde is best known for Booksmart 

(2019), which she directed and won several 

nominations and awards. 

Our vigilante, Sadie, is a mystery. She is 

a one-woman expert, and she does her job 

extremely well. Her work is disturbing, as she 

saves the abused, but something about it is 

satisfying to watch. 

As you watch, you can’t help but feel 

something very dark motivates her. There are 

flashbacks to her own group therapy, which is 

a group talking — not practicing martial arts. 

The scenes are moving, and in the end, we 

learn why she started this life. 

Throughout it all, she struggles with 

money because she cannot collect on an 

insurance policy for her husband. He has disappeared, 

and the insurance company must 

see his body before they can pay out. It is in 

her pursuit of closure that we get ours. We 

learn a despicable truth about her missing 

husband... and one last job Sadie needs to 

finish. 

There are up to 10 million cases of 

domestic violence every year, according to 

the National Coalition against Domestic 

Violence. But don’t confuse this movie with 

a public service announcement. Instead, see 

it as an action thriller with a very important 

purpose. It’s available to stream on several 

outlets.

We are to have a birthday party, 

Young Albert and I. Strictly speaking, 

we do not share the same 

birthday, but Young Albert is a 

trusting soul, as are most dogs, 

unlike cats, who, despite you feeding them every 

day, and never once having poisoned them in 

many years, still insist on sniffing the food 

before tasting. A dog would eat a live hand grenade 

if one were offered, and explode with the 

same look of bemused loyalty and love in their 

eyes that they have when left alone for 10 seconds. 

Anyway, he loves our shared birthday. Or 

at least I think he does: Yorkshire Terriers have 

inscrutable faces — the same beady-eyed smirk 

when looking for a biscuit as when about to leap 

on one’s leg and attempt intercourse with it. 

Our birthday is next month. I shall not give 

away the date as yet, for it would inevitably lead 

to lines forming. I think a small and understated 

affair will suffice: a thousand guests, ice sculptures, 

nude servers and a huge vat of molten 

chocolate. But enough of Albert’s arrangements: 

I prefer something a little more ostentatious. 

The Old Fogey 

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur 

In past years I have had the cream of society 

in attendance. I remember the year Howard 

Hughes attempted to land the Spruce Goose in 

what he assumed was a small inshore lake but 

was in fact a pool of champagne. How I laughed 

as a $10,000 bubbly tidal wave engulfed Dorothy 

Parker and her chattering circle. 

There will be party favors: I insist on a 

party bag of deepest velvet, to be handed out to 

guests at midnight, as myself and Albert stroll 

hand in paw around the garden in our Birthday 

Best Outfits (this should not be confused with 

our Birthday Suits). I usually favor something in 

midnight blue woven silk, with the entire starscape 

woven in with pearls and precious stones, 

while Albert, in part due to dogs’ inability to see 

in color, always opts for a scarlet cape, canary 

yellow jacket and little green boots. 

The bags sometimes contains gold 

dubloons, taken from the stash of Captain Kidd, 

sometimes individual pearls I captured from the 

bottom of the Indian Ocean, and very occasionally 

something more wicked. One year, toepopper 

mines from the Vietnam jungle caused a stir. 

Another time, powerful spring-loaded mousetraps 

gave a delightful Tom-and-Jerry ambience 

that made Young Albert laugh so much 

he coughed up a squeaky toy he had eaten a 

year before, while JFK toppled into the pool in 

pain and surprise, followed by a score of secret 

agents and a worried Marilyn Monroe. 

I am off now, to create invites: I have had 

an acre of gold foil delivered, and a truckload of 

calligraphers flown in from Japan.

Since it looks like we’ll be dining al fresco 

for some time yet, why not sample the

Since the dawn of civilization, any 

area where people lived in crowded conditions 

attracted vendors selling precooked meals. 

Though street food varies around the world, it 

is always convenient to carry, high in calories 

and loaded with protein. Think of our kitchen-less 

ancestors enjoying meat pies, falafel, 

or meat-on-a-stick. Sandwiches, hot dogs and 

tacos don’t require plates. Hot pretzels and 

roasted chestnuts became staples of cold city 

streets. 

Pushcarts were feeding Americans before 

there was an America — New Amsterdam had 

rules about them in 1691. Later, mobile kitchens 

made food even more portable. Dining cars 

fed passengers on long railroad trips. Cooks 

supplied cowboys from well-equipped chuck 

wagons, and in the First World War, mobile 

canteens supplied armies with hot and filling

their trucks outside of college dormitories in 

the early twentieth century, leading to the tradition 

of late night “fat sandwiches” that contributed 

to the freshman fifteen. By the 1950s, 

ice cream trucks began rolling up and down 

the streets of suburbia, and in 1974, a man 

named Raul Martinez converted one of these to 

serve tacos to workers in Los Angeles. Modern 

food trucks are the descendants of all of these, 

but they gained their gourmet reputation more

recently, during the Great Recession of 2007/8. 

The late aughts were hard on restaurants, 

so chef Roy Choi gambled on a gourmet food 

truck he named Kogi and began offering his 

respected Korean barbecue street-side. Newly 

popular social media tools let him communicate 

his location with his customers, who, 

in turn, did his marketing for him. The food 

truck was a success. Chefs in other cities soon 

followed and upscale street food became commonplace. 

One of Cape May’s favorite fixed 

stores — Peace Pie — was born of this mobile 

movement. 

Food trucks allow co-workers to lunch 

together, without agreeing on a cuisine. 

Farmer’s markets — like West Cape May’s on 

Tuesday afternoons — include live music and 

shopping in addition to the empanadas, barbecue 

and crab cakes. Food truck festivals, rallies, 

or rodeos bring diners from miles away. Join 

the fun at West Cape May Elementary School 

PTA’s “Food Truck Festival,” on July 18 from 4 to 

8 p.m. at the Backyard Park, 732 Broadway. The 

rain-date is July 19.

Cape May residents Charlotte List, Ginna Royalty and Brady Press along with some friends organized the modified triathlon to support their friend, Nina 

Luker who is battling Stage IV non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Partipants ran the boardwalk, biked to the Point and back, and finished with a buoy swim. 


There’s nothing quite like being in Cape 

May to ignite the senses and kindle a 

new excitement of being at the Center 

of the known Bird Watching Universe. 

So, it was for me June 30 when I 

pulled into the South Cape May Meadows 

parking lot for a once around. The northern 

winds associated with the season’s first cold 

front drove me south. While I didn’t find any 

migrating birds, the bounty of resident species 

was reward enough. 

Halfway down the trail, I intercepted a 

couple from Delaware. He, a new birder, was 

hoping there might be an organized bird walk. 

Undaunted, he struck off on his own. “Want to 

go on a bird walk?” I invited and on we went. 

I began by identifying bird vocalizations. 

But being new to the hobby, he couldn’t put 

an image to the name. I began concentrating 

on birds that we could see which I am happy 

to report included a healthy number of Purple 

Martins. On the beach, we were greeted by 

a strident swarm of Least Terns and a sound 

that I have not heard in South Cape May for 

three years — the mellow “peep-plo,” note of 

Piping Plovers. While outside the fenced area, 

it was clear the bird had young about. We hurried 

on without seeing the plover to ease her 

distress. Young plovers are easy prey to crows 

and ghost crabs when adults are distracted. 

On the beach while several gull species vied 

for attention, I shared that I’d recently co-authored 

a book on Gull identification. This led 

my companion to share that he’d just written 

a book on the history of New Castle. That’s 

one of the things I enjoy about bird watching 

— it attracts a commendable cross-section of 

humanity. 

Crossing back over the dune, we were 

finally granted a look at a male Indigo Bunting, 

whose cone cell searing plumage was too 

backlit to fully appreciate, but just then a 

buffoonish yellow-breasted bird lofted over 

the trail. “What’s that one?” my companion 

wanted to know. 

“Yellow-breasted Chat,” I said. “It used 

to be classified among the warblers but now 

it’s in its own family.” I was impressed by his 

powers of perception. At the beginning of our 

jaunt, he was not attuned to birds in flight. 

We rounded out the trip with Great and 

Snowy Egrets and discussing his plans to 

return in August. I applauded his timing, 

allowing that it coincides with peak songbird 

migration. We parted and never exchanged 

names, but I’m sure we’ll meet again. We have 

the same habits and a mutual bond to the 

Center of the known Birding Universe.

I have a good friend who I’ve played tennis 

with for years. She’s not very good, but I 

always include her in our doubles matches or 

arrange for her to play with a same-caliber 

player. No one will play with her in any singles 

match except me. She is, however, a good golfer 

and plays all the area courses. I have asked 

her repeatedly this year to include me once the 

courses reopened. She had the nerve to tell me, 

“You’re not good enough and will hold up play.” 

That is not true, and I am so insulted. I stopped 

including her in any tennis matches and she 

asked me why no one has called her to play. 

Should I tell her she’s “not good enough and 

will hold up play” or just ignore it? — Dissed

The Answer Lady must confess that is exactly 

what she would do. However, if you want 

to preserve the friendship, tell her your tennis 

card is full, but she is free to call other players 

and make her own arrangements, as should

and has quickly adapted. Kira has wonderful

OZZY came to the shelter as a two-year-old 

boy in March 2019. Like many shepards, he 

does not like new people. It will take a few 

visits for him to get to know you but once he 

accepts you, prepare for some love. Ozzy loves 

running around and playing fetch in the yard. 

He knows basic commands and would be best 

in a home that has a large, fenced in yard. 

VINNY is the classic example of a “gentle 

giant.” This sweet boy came to the shelter as a 

stray but has quickly claimed the hearts of staff 

and volunteers. He has an even temperament 

and loves to chase toys in the yard. Vinny also 

love taking a dip in the pool or standing under 

the hose. He is a social boy who would be best 

with a family looking for a playful companion.
