muzzles and stamped with the numbers ‘196’ beneath the<br />

breeches, box-lock actions engraved with scrolling<br />

foliage, engraved tangs, flattened bag-shaped butts cut<br />

with chequering, and engraved steel trigger-guards<br />

PISTOLS BY CARL SCHMIDT IN K‹HNDORF B. SUHL, MID-<br />

19TH CENTURY<br />

with octagonal sighted barrels rifled with eight grooves,<br />

rebated muzzles for loading, signed in silver and<br />

decorated with a pattern of delicate silver scrollwork<br />

above the inscription ‘Guss Stahl’ at the breeches,<br />

engraved breeches numbered ‘1’ and ‘2’ respectively,<br />

scroll-and border-engraved breech tangs fitted with<br />

adjustable back-sights, scroll-and border-engraved locks<br />

with small stepped tails (one hammer spur chipped, the<br />

other hammer missing), set triggers, highly figured<br />

walnut half-stocks, fluted butts, engraved steel mounts<br />

comprising very small scrolling side-plates, spurred<br />

trigger-guards, engraved butt-caps secured by screw-in<br />

burred finials, German silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and<br />

with no provision for a ramrod: in a later veneered case<br />

complete with some original accessories including<br />

combined hammer and precision loading tool and bullet<br />

mould<br />

replaced), figured walnut full stock (worn), engraved steel<br />

trigger-guard and vacant white metal escutcheon (worn<br />

ramrod missing); the second with embossed brass body<br />

decorated with foliage and a scrollwork panel, and brass<br />

sprung nozzle<br />
