with slightly swamped octagonal sighted barrels<br />

inscribed with the maker’s address over the breeches and<br />

inlaid with a gold line, gold lined vents, engraved breech<br />

tangs fitted with standing back-sights, signed stepped<br />

bevelled locks engraved with sunbursts and flowers, fitted<br />

with rollers and semi-rainproof pans (one cock replaced,<br />

the other retaining screw detached), triggers retaining<br />

traces of original blued finish, figured walnut full stock<br />

(the fore-ends each cracked, minor repairs), finely<br />

chequered butts, engraved steel mounts, comprising<br />

trigger-guards decorated with bouquets on the bows and<br />

with pineapple finials, small tear-shaped butt-caps with<br />

traces of bluing, a pair of ramrod-pipes, and silver<br />

escutcheons engraved with the owner’s crest, motto and<br />

initials ‘G.T’, and one retaining its original horn-tipped<br />

wooden ramrod with steel worm (the other replaced): in<br />

original fitted oak case with brass flush-fitting handle<br />

engraved ‘Capt. G. Taylor’, lined in green baize (worn,<br />

compartment lids replaced, key escutcheon missing), the<br />

lid applied with trade label for 55 Charing Cross, and<br />

retaining an early brass-tipped rammer<br />

The 1816 Army list records one G. Taylor, Lieutenant<br />

Colonel George Taylor, Inspecting Field Officer of Militia<br />

in Canada, commissioned 4th June 1813.<br />
