the first in excavated condition, with two-stage blade,<br />

rootwood grip of oval-section, fitted with a gold coin at<br />

the base of the blade, a gilt band top and bottom, and a<br />

gilt disc on the pommel (restorations); the second in<br />

excavated condition, with sharply tapering blade of<br />

flattened-triangular section, rootwood grip of<br />

characteristic form incorporating a pair of pronounced<br />

nodules at the base (extensively repaired); and the third<br />

with later blade, steel hilt of characteristic form including<br />

a pair of short quillons with serpent head quillons, and<br />

baluster grip (pitted)<br />

A SCOTTISH DIRK, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 18TH<br />

CENTURY<br />

with broad blade cut-down from a broadsword, incised<br />

with a series of marks on each side including a running<br />

wolf, a cross and orb and a double cross and orb,<br />

rootwood grip carved with a naïve flowerhead on each<br />

face, formed with a pair of tall shoulders each reinforced<br />

with a brass panel and brass disc pommel (extensively<br />

repaired), in a contemporary leather scabbard (crazed and<br />

repaired) with later brass mounts<br />

carved grip decorated with traditional basket weave<br />

designs and fitted with copper ferrule and cap pommel, in<br />

decorated with scalloped edges, and complete with its<br />

accompanying pieces<br />
