The Avocado
by Jo Hanna Hill
The avocado. This versatile
fruit has gotten a lot of press in
the recent years, so what’s the
big deal? On top of its creamy
texture and delicious flavor,
the avocado is ripe with many
nutritional benefits. According
to the California Avocado
Commission, backed by the
FDA, eating avocados allows the
body to absorb more fat-soluble
nutrients, like Vitamins A, D, E,
and K, from other foods. This is
likely due to avocados containing
monounsaturated fats, AKA
one of the healthy fats. Fats are
needed as crucial part to your
body’s cells’ structures, and
unsaturated fats like avocados,
when eaten in moderation,
can help lower cholesterol and
decrease risk for heart disease
according to the American
Heart Association. This health
food is a great topping to salads
and other dishes, is the main
component to guacamole, and
has a flavor that blends with a
variety of foods. Still not sold on
the wonder of the avocado? Try
one of these recipes and see how
you feel.
