954 OCEAN DRIVE, CAPE MAY ¯ 609-884-5444 ¯ HARBORVIEWCAPEMAY.COM
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s
excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different
on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of
the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the
victuals provided by local eateries.
The place: Lucky Bones Backwater Grille.
The vibe: Casual, family-friendly and high quality. One visit and
it’s obvious why this is a local fave... any time of year.
The trivia: In the 1800s, for good luck before heading out to sea,
fishermen would wear the hook-like claw — AKA the lucky bone —
of a male horseshoe crab around their necks. If you don’t know what
a horseshoe crab is, take a walk on Higbee Beach, on the northwest
tip of the island, any time around May and June and you’ll likely see
around 400-500 of them marooned. Tip: Gently flip them over and
watch as they slowly make their way back to the Delaware Bay. It’s a
pretty cool phenomenon.
The options: Takeout, delivery or outdoor dining under a lighted
tent (complete with Lil’s socially distant bar) with a view of the Spicer
Creek Channel. Because this was a rainy, lazy night, we opted for the
delivery option, and we were glad we did — the delivery driver was
prompt, efficient and super-friendly. He arrived only a couple minutes
after the estimated time on the Lucky Bones delivery portal.
Quite the difference from the ill-fated time we tried to order sandwiches
for the office from Wawa, and waited two hours before the
corder canceled itself. Note to self: Avoid Doordash and Grubhub.
The meal: The new Roman-style Grandma’s Pie, a thick square
pizza topped with San Marzano tomato sauce, basil, roasted garlic
and freshly shredded mozzarella. We also added pepperoni, mushrooms
and red onion. Perfect mix of doughy and crispy.
The standy-by: We’d be remiss if we did not also mention the
Cuban-spice pork chop, another fabulous Lucky Bones meal we’ve
ordered oh, say, 712 times.
The hot tip: Lucky Bones offers a loyalty program that allows you
to rack up points which can be turned into credit for future meals.
The consensus: Pizza is always a good idea. Especially if it’s coming
from the LB.
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
Matt, Betsy
Sean Taylor
Can you believe it’s September? And can
you believe that every September we
say can you believe it’s September? I
can’t believe it. Fall brings with it cooler
evenings, bronze sunsets and mosquitoes
the size of Shetland ponies. One flew past
me the other night with a dog in its mouth.
My acoustic music concern, TNT (Terry &
Tim or Tim & Terry depending on whom you
ask) had the privilege of playing at Exit Zero
Filling Station over Labor Day weekend (we’re
there every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 530)
and it was amazing to watch the wait staff, hosts
and kitchen deal with such huge masses with
such aplomb. Same goes for the fine folks across
the street at Black Duck and Viggiano’s. Please,
if you’re getting frustrated by the wait for your
table or the line for your drink, consider how
hard these bastards have been working the last
five months and just breath. I promise, they’re
all trying their hardest to accommodate you.
But especially, if I’m serving you, be nice to me,
because I’m not as nice as them and I will yell
back at you. I’ve got seven jobs, I can lose one.
Thank you, Brady Schoenrock and
Harpoon’s on the Bay for hosting TNT on
Mondays this summer. We had a great time and,
more importantly, you paid us to be there! (But
seriously, we appreciate it and hope to be back
next year assuming an asteroid doesn’t obliterate
us which, frankly, feels like 2020 has been
building up to.) Tim and I continue on alternate
Mondays at Beach Shack until October 8,
assuming, still, no asteroid.
Am I the only one who has to mow his
driveway?
Weekly Weight Watch: After touching 223
on Tuesday for my yearly low (Tuesday always
seems to be my lightest day, no idea why, probably
because I’m dehydrated from a weekend of
singing and partying like a rock star), I clocked
in Sunday morning at 224.5. I was probably
legit closer to 223, but I’d just fired down two
cans of Diet Sunkist after mowing the lawn
(see my Facebook for my series of glistening
portraits… if you dare). Yes, there is such a thing
as Diet Sunkist. Yes, it is delicious. Anyway,
this is the lightest (if you can call it that) I’ve
been since 2013, when I dipped under 210, but
that season ended in the back of an ambulance
getting a shot to reset my heart rate. Super fun.
But at least I get to tell the story of showing up
in the ER and the nurse yelling, “What the hell
happened to him? I thought he was a cardio!”
because I was in full Ghost Ship zombie costume
and make-up.
Anyway, by this time next week, if everything
goes according to Hoyle ( yeesh, the old
man phrases really come out after you turn 50…
next I’ll talk about the Spalding Guide and saying
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Traveling changes us in ways that only
seeing new places can — so is there
hope during a pandemic? How can
you breathe the fresh air in a new
country halfway around the world
when you can’t even go to the Acme without a
mask? Well, there’s a channel that will scratch
that itch for you!
But before going there, as anybody been to
a theater since restrictions from the pandemic
eased? They’ve been opening, not everywhere...
but opening. I haven’t ventured out
yet. I see a lot of new films being promoted as
“in theater and on demand.” The on-demand
pricing is… well… a little demanding.
I plan to review Mulan and Bill and Ted Face
the Music. If anyone has seen either of these
two — or any film — and has something to
say about it, write me at tomhsims@aol.com!
Your comments may be published here.
Meantime, one place I did find on the
Disney+ channel is the National Geographic
section. It is packed with choices. There are
television series, movies, Vets and Pets, science
innovation programs, ancient mystery
specials and more.
There’s one section, called Exploring Our
World, featuring sometimes quirky shows.
The World According to Jeff Goldblum is hosted
by, well I’ll let you guess. He takes one subject
at a time (mundane topics, like sneakers and
ice cream) and explores them in depth. I saw
a couple, but I haven’t been back to see more.
I plan catch the Bear Grylls on the channel —
well, all I can stand to watch before he starts
eating zebras.
What does have me fascinated on the
National Geographic channel is the Wild
Series. I won’t travel too far anytime soon, but
my next adventure is just a few clicks away.
These specials are mesmerizing and beautifully
shot. They take you to lands you may not
get to see for a long time — or anytime. Some
locations are so remote I’m never visiting.
Wild Sri Lanka takes you from plains to
forests to the depths of the ocean. You’ll meet
giants in those waters, unique monkeys in the
trees, and an unusual “king of the jungle!” The
cinematography is stunning, and the storytelling
through real footage lifts you for a few
minutes away from miserable news stories
that sometimes depict the worst in our human
species.
Whether it’s a trip to the shore or a trip
away from it, travel changes us. Horizons
are stretched, and perspectives forever broadened.
Don’t give in to fear, frustration, resentment
or self-pity. Take an adventure instead.
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
Fat Mezz Band
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER PRINTS, PLEASE EMAIL PHOTO@EXITZERO.US
Ah, Prohibition. I remember not being
too alarmed when it came into force,
as the D’Catur Mansion always has
some 3,000 bottles of finest Scotch
laid down in the cellar. It’s enough
to last a year, maybe 18 months if I give up my
nightcap, which I have only done in times of
direst emergency, such as when we expected
a Nazi attack and had a blackout.
This night, I tried to find and pour my
whisky in the darkness but miscounted the
number of steps I knew would take me from
the master bedroom to the Drinks Room
— out of bed, 59 steps to the door, turn left,
300 steps to the staircase, 192 steps down,
then first right. A short 500 steps across the
hallway then another 254 through the Trophy
Room. From there, a 45-degree turn and 398
steps diagonally across to the decanter. Sadly,
my post-dinner tipple was a touch strong and
I fear I turned only 43 degrees at the last stage,
bringing me not to the drinks trolley but to
Mrs D’s gardening cart, where it would seem
I poured myself a generous measure of extrastrong
liquid fertilizer and downed it in one. I
did think the taste unusual, but the kick was
substantial and I wobbled back to bed. Only
when morning came did I find my hair and
beard had grown by 30 feet and my toenails
were curved like bobsleigh runners.
Once my staff had trimmed me free, I put
two and two together and from then on added
a few drops of the stuff to a marked decanter
when we had guests we were not too keen on.
But I was peeved on behalf of my countrymen’s
constitutional right to bear a hangover,
and so organized what was the East
Coast’s largest supply line of booze.
We of course ran a few fast ships back
and forth to distract the navy cutters, but our
main supplies came in through a cast-iron
pipeline that allowed ships to dock at a harmless
little “rock” three miles off the coast and
have the beer pumped onto land.
At its peak, we had 3,000 gallons an hour
coming ashore. Things went awry one day
when we had a high-pressure blowout on
the lawn in front of Congress Hall, and a
100-foot-high geyser of beer erupted.
In the panic to stop the f low before the
coastguard spotted it, a young lad shut the
valve off completely, causing some 10 million
gallons of finest beer to vent into the old
unused waterpipes under Cape May.
It has stayed there to this day, fermenting,
building pressure, until one unlucky
poke with a garden spade, or one ill-chosen
excavator shovel, and we will all be propelled
upwards with the force of a yeasty
atom bomb.
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, get into gardening!
Emily Dickinson wrote that “hope is
behind a low maintenance yard? Do you want
the thing with feathers,” but gardeners
flowers or produce? Can you shrink your lawn
know that hope can also wear petals.
to save water? Then, on your pad, sketch your
Gardening is a hopeful act — you put
dream garden. Rearrange your existing plants,
a seed in the mud and, after a while,
giving the hostas more shade and the squash
something green shows up. Whether you have
a large lot or a couple of containers, gardening
is good for you. Doctors in the UK have “prescribed”
gardening as a treatment for anxiety
for years, noting gardens promote connections
to nature and neighbors, and increase consumption
of fresh produce. Before you plant,
you have to plan, and a walk through Cape May
more sun. Draw in some milkweed and other
native plants, which do well with little attention.
Add a mix of corn, zucchini, and lima
beans for homemade succotash. Be bold — any
mistakes can be erased.
Once September is over, you’ll start the
work to make it happen. Divide and transplant
your peonies and daylilies, and water
will help you plan your own dream garden.
them generously in their new homes. Plant
September is a great time for gardeners.
chair. Instead of spending money on a sun
the spring bulbs like hyacinths and tulips that
Chores are less urgent, and the work of the meter, you — or your suddenly homeschooled
make April so magical. Plant new shrubs and
summer is paying off in anemones, chrysanthemums,
and sunflowers. The hydrangeas and areas of your yard get direct sunlight, shade, to encourage root growth. Mow your leaves
companion — can make a chart noting which trees while the warm soil and cool air combine
lilies are hanging on, and tomatoes are ripening or dappled light for the 13 or so hours of a into nutritious mulch for your azaleas. Clean
on their vines. September invites the gardener
to forget this year’s failures and focus on next
year’s goals. Start by tracking the sun — this
is a great chore, because it requires looking
at your yard all day, preferably from a lounge
September day. Talk to your neighbors about
their successes. Consider your goals — are
you hoping for another work-at-home summer
with plenty of time for weeding? Are you
crossing your fingers for a long journey, leaving
out the garden debris. Water and weed until the
first frost — usually around Halloween in these
parts. Then, clean, sharpen and oil your tools,
drain your hoses, and dream hopeful dreams
of spring.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Well, we’re in the thick of it now.
September is warbler month.
Members of the effervescent
New World bird family
migrate through Cape May en
route to wintering grounds in
the West Indies, Mexico and Central America.
Breeding for the most part in the boreal forests
of Canada, Cape May is an important waystation
along the great Pan-American highway.
When Alexander Wilson was studying
in these parts in the early 1800s, he did not
realize that he found a whole new family
group — comprised of 56 species, not all of
which pass through Cape May — not represented
in the Old World. He mistakenly
called these nimble, active, brightly colored
birds “flycatchers.” To see the warblers, visit
Higbee Beach or the Beanery, but my favorite
location is the small wooded plot next to the
Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drive,
Cape May Point. Binoculars are a must — you
need a wide field of view, good depth of field
and close focus down to at least six feet.
Forget what you may have heard about
“the confusing fall warblers.” Yes, many species
are not as brightly colored as they are
in the Spring, but most retain a vestige of
their breeding pattern. Adult-male American
Redstarts still flash red panels — juveniles,
yellow to orange. Magnolia Warblers still
flash white tail panels and Yellow Warblers
are still yellow.
A good place to search for Cape May’s
namesake bird is the cedars just north of the
hawk-watch platform at Cape May Point State
Park. There you can also rely on local experts
to guide you along. Field guides? It’s hard to
beat The Sibley Guide to Birds — written in Cape
May Point by North America’s premier birder.
New birders are well served by the Kaufman
Guide to Birds of North America, a guide written
with beginners in mind. Also, don’t overlook
The Warbler Guide by local author Scott Whittle.
Come October, the waves of migrating
warblers will be gone. We’ll be down to
Yellow-rumped Warblers which are engaging
enough and will be here through the winter.
Come the next cold front, rise early, head for
the sunny side of the woods, out of the wind
and watch the show. Warblers are insect eaters.
Insect activity will be greatest where the
sun falls and the wind doesn’t penetrate. If it
turns warm, seek out wet, shaded woodlands.
Enjoy the show. It’s fall in the Bird
Watching Capital of North America. Millions
of birders would give anything to be where you
are, right now.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries
from gentle readers on all manner of
relationship quandaries, matters of
the heart and ethics. Sit back, enjoy
a cup of coffee and contemplate the
wisdom herein:
Dear Answer Lady
I have always been very close to my
11-year-old granddaughter. I took her everywhere
and spent as much time as I could
with her because of her parent’s work schedules.
Since the COVID onset however, she has
grown very distant from me. I was hospitalized
with it early on and truly thought I was not going
to make it. Thankfully, I am in my 50s and
have recovered, but she shows no inclination
to want to be around me. It breaks my heart. I
wonder if you have any suggestions to help me
bring her back. — Too Socially Distant
Dear Distant
She probably thought she was going to lose
you forever and is frightened by the prospect of
that loss. Small steps are in order. The Answer
Lady is a big believer in the healing power of
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
milkshakes and suggests a trip to Dellas 5 &
10’s soda fountain. Also, check the Cape May
Bird Observatory’s website and see what bird
outings are coming up — it is fall. The raptors
and the monarch butterflies should be in full
swing, circling our island. At some point, you
might want to broach the subject of your illness
and assure her that, yes, one day you will not be
there for her, but today you are both well and
happy — rejoice in that.
Dear Answer Lady
My girlfriends told me to write you. We
often get together on weekends — never more
than 15 or 20 of us and usually in someone’s
backyard. One girl, who summers here, is
constantly telling us how much she loves her
boyfriend, but then starts flirting with us —
and it doesn’t stop there. She seems quick to
hook up with me in particular. I don’t like it and
don’t want her around. I have a girlfriend who
can’t always come to the parties. She knows
that but keeps it up. I don’t want to cause
drama, but how do I get rid of her? — Plagued
Dear Plagued
The Answer Lady hates to state the obvious,
but how about staying home one weekend?
Second, Labor Day has come and gone, and
your summer pest will soon be as well. Third,
have a gathering somewhere unexpected. It
may not always work but could serve as a signal
to her. Lastly, tell her how you feel about her
behavior and walk away. You need to go on a
shopping spree to rid yourself of the bad juju.
Galvanic is the ticket.
PICO is an active boy who loves to be with
people. He loves to run around the yard but
quickly returns to his human for a brief pat.
He has excellent leash skills and enjoys long
walks. Pico lived with children in his previous
home and is very affectionate. He would do
best in an active household with a family willing
to continue his training.
ICE is a sweet, seven-year-old lady. She came
to the shelter when her owner died and no
one could care for her. She loves catching and
chasing frisbees in the yard and playing fetch.
Ice has excellent leash skills and enjoys long
walks. She is also housetrained and great with
other cats. Ice would be the perfect companion
for an active family.
ROCCO is a sensitive and sweet boy who
came to the shelter when his owners could no
longer care for him. He was an outside dog and
is adjusting to an inside kennel at the shelter.
Rocco has great leash skills but gets confused
when something is thrown for him to fetch —
he never learned to play with toys. He would
be best in a patient home with older children.
