Amid a pandemic and all uncertainty,

many of us have realized how necessary

the arts are to keep our sanity. The

national observance of Hispanic Heritage

Month was felt throughout the city of

New Orleans with many organizations

mentioning it and many events featuring

part of the Latino culture.

We at VIVA NOLA were able to utilize

our audiovisual resources and great

relationships with partners and sponsors to create the first VIVA

NOLA Fest, a virtual celebration to showcase a variety of local

talent including folkloric Mexican dances by Ballet Folklorico

Vive Mi Tierra, Mexican songs by Madison Guzman, tango and

milonga performance by Maureen and Carlos, Latin rhythms

by Fermín Ceballos and Merengue-4 Four, a poem declamation

by Daniela Bello, a saxophone performance by Alex Canales,

a cooking demonstration by Chef Wilfredo Avelar, and a

reggaeton performance by Deco Martinez.

I’m humbled by this experience! The support we received

to put this virtual festival together was incredible, so I want

to thank our sponsors Cada Insurance, Carnaval Latino,

Jefferson Parish, Fidelity Bank P.O.W.E.R., Delta Personnel, Delta

Administrative Services, Thelma Ceballos Meyers State Farm

Insurance, The Hispanic Apostolate, Fox 8 News, Romi Gonzalez

and Associates, GEICO Insurance Agent Allen Boudreaux and

WLAE-TV.

Our community came together to celebrate Latinx/Hispanic

Heritage and we are so excited to have been able to feature

so many talented artists and the hard-working business

owners who also supported us by donating gifts from their

shops and restaurants such as Cristy Cali, Espíritu Mezcalería,

NOLA Sports Center, El Paso Metairie, MIA Boutique, Passport

Polish, Miel Brewery, Tito’s Ceviche & Pisco, Los Jefes Grill, and

Cuentacuento by Andrea Olatunji. You can still see the event on

our YOUTUBE channel and Facebook Page. You can also catch

it on Fox8live.com/espanol and the access channel for Jefferson

Parish.

There is no doubt that Latin American culture belongs in

such a vibrant, joyous region. That’s why we celebrate diversity

every day. VIVA NOLA!
